The WORST Place to Live in the UK? | BARNSLEY
Is this the worst place to live in the UK? In today's tour, we visit Barnsley. Barnsley was named one of the worst places to live in England in 2022. My intention isn't to offend anyone who is living in Barnsley, I wanted to see for myself why this town is considered to be one of the worst places to live in England and form my own opinion.

Places to see in ( Barnsley - UK )
Barnsley is a large town in South Yorkshire, England, located halfway between Leeds and Sheffield. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town centre lies on the west bank of the Dearne Valley.
Barnsley is surrounded by several smaller settlements which together form the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, of which Barnsley is the largest and its administrative centre. The town is accessed from junctions 36, 37 and 38 of the M1 motorway and has a railway station on the Hallam and Penistone Lines. Barnsley F.C. is the local football club.
Barnsley is a former industrial town centred on coal mining and glassmaking. Although both industries declined in the 20th century, Barnsley's culture is rooted in its industrial heritage and it has a tradition of brass bands, originally created as social clubs by its mining communities. It is also home of the Barnsley chop.
Divisions and suburbs of Barnsley are :
Ardsley, Athersley, Carlton, Cundy Cross, Gawber, Honeywell, Kendray, Kingstone, Lundwood, Monk Bretton, New Lodge, Oakwell, Old Town, Pogmoor, Smithies, Stairfoot, Worsbrough (includes Worsbrough Bridge, Worsbrough Common, Worsbrough Dale, Worsbrough Village and Ward Green), Wilthorpe, Dodworth, Mapplewell, Staincross, Royston, Wombwell, Hoyland, Elsecar, Kexbrough, Cudworth.
The main transport hub is Barnsley Interchange, a combined rail and busstation that was opened on Sunday 20 May 2007, and was the first project in the remaking Barnsley scheme to be completed. Stagecoach Yorkshire run most bus services within Barnsley, operating to and from Barnsley Interchange. Barnsley is also served by:
Dodworth railway station west of the town centre, which is a stop on the Penistone Line, and has one platform.
Darton railway station however, is on the Hallam Line, has two platforms and is in the north of Barnsley.
Goldthorpe railway station and has two platforms (east of Barnsley). The line is on the Wakefield Line and has no service to the above stations or Barnsley Interchange.
Thurnscoe railway station and has two platforms (east of Barnsley). The station is on the Wakefield Line and has no service to any Barnsley station other than Goldthorpe.
The nearest airport is Robin Hood Airport approximately 26 miles (42 km) away.

Towns in England – South Kirkby
What can you learn from South Kirkby, a town in England? Let’s travel to South Kirkby, one of the towns in England. This time, we’re not going to rank it. We don’t even want to discuss it as either a good or bad, beautiful or ugly, and richest or poorest town. Rather, we want to bring it to the limelight and prove that there’s much to learn about a town regardless of its size. Where is Kirkby located? What are its prominent features?
South Kirby in Perspective
South Kirkby is a small town in Wakefield in West Yorkshire. It is governed locally by the administration of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. The town’s motto is “Friendship, Unity & Progress.” It’s a small former mining town in the Wakefield Metropolitan District. Surrounded by other former mining towns such as Hemsworth, South Elmsall, and Cudworth, it is close to the South Yorkshire border.
This little town is served by two railway stations situated 1.6 kilometers apart. One is Moorthorpe railway station on the line between Leeds and Sheffield with services being an hour on Monday to Saturday and two-hourly service on Sunday. And the other is South Elmsall railway station which is on the line between Doncaster and Leeds.
A Brief History of South Kirkby
The town appeared first in the 1086 Domesday Book and still retains the site of the ancient Saxon settlement. It was mentioned in the book as Cherchebi, which was one of the 6 manors held by Uctred. But it may also be thought to be settled even before the arrival of the ancient Norse believed to have arrived via Ireland around 900 A.D. We learned that the name Kirk-by means “church and settlement.”
Through the centuries, the ownership of this land passed through the hands of many families. Later, the Molyneux family who was Catholics purchased all of the manor lands in the 16th Century and the semblance of that continuity existed. Despite the pressures of the English Reformation, this family retained their religious beliefs and never converted to the Church of England until after the marriage of Charles William Molyneux in 1768.
For centuries, there was a Mill in the town and the flooding of land by the use of dams caused many legal disputes in the 14th century. That Corn Mill was in use until it was destroyed by fire in the early 20th century. Various leadership changes, reformation, revolution, and industrialization have transformed the town throughout the centuries.
Population and Demography of South Kirkby
The small town with a population of more than 10,000 occupies a total area of 2,450 square kilometers. This shows a density of about 3,711 residents per square kilometer. It has experienced an annual population growth of 0.69 percent since 2011, according to the ONS.
In South Kirkby, there are slightly more females than males. The females numbering 4,583, represent 50.4 percent while the 4,510 males in the town represent 49.6 percent of the population. The majority of the residents, 5,268 which is 57.9 percent are between the ages of 18 to 64. While 24.1 percent numbering 2,194 are minors under 18, only 17.9 percent of the people in this town are 65 years and above and they’re 1,631.
The town is made up of 98.9 percent White residents numbering 8,439. Other ethnic groups in South Kirkby are 24 Asians, 19 Blacks, 4 Arabs, 45 mixed or multiple ethnicities, and just two from others. About 72 percent, which is 5,789 residents of this town are Christians while 21 of them are Muslims. They also have 5 Hinduists among them with 1 Jewish, 2 Buddhists, and 24 professing other religions with as many as 2,124 claiming that are non-religious.

A Cumbrian Lost Railway Walk to Smardale Gill Viaduct
We're up in Cumbria in the very north of England today. Famous for the Lake District and sausages, amongst other things. But we are here to look at one of the regions disused railways.
The South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway built a line linking the Stockton and Darlington railway in the east, with the Lancaster & Carlisle Railway (what is now the West Coast Main line) in the west at Tebay.
Passing through Barnard Castle and Kirkby Stephen, it Opened in1861, it was known as the Stainmore Line – named after the Stainmore summit. It later became part of the North Eastern Railway.
At the town of Kirkby Stephen, the line split, with the Eden Valley Line heading North West towards Penrith. The Stainmore line cotinued West through Smardale towards Tebay.
Passenger trains stopped running in 1952 and The Stainmore line closed completely ten years later.
Today we’ll be starting our video at Kirkby Stephen, before following the line through Smargill in the direction of Tebay.
Kirkby Stephen East opened in 1861, closing in 1962. The junction station had quite a railway presence as we look at old maps. With engine sheds, a station canopy and plenty of sidings.
The Stainmore railway @StainmoreRlyCompany are now based at the station site, with the ultimate aim to restore the Eden Valley Line as far as Warcop and Appleby. The preserved railway was closed when we visited, but is open many days in warmer seasons.
We head up the Smardale and begin our walk along the trackbed of the lost railway - superbly mantained as part of the @cumbriawildlifetrust. Passing the site of the former Smardale station. The building beautifully kept today as a private residence. Continuing down the trackbed we arrive at the Smardale Viaduct, which carries the Settle & Carlisle Railway overhead. Interestingly, the highest viaduct on the S&C.
Our Stainmore Line hugs the side of the Scandel Beck Valley with a steep ravine to one side and the side of a fell to the other, winding it's way through the valley until we are spat out into the open and the sight of the restored Smargill Gill viaduct that we will be walking over.
The Smardale Gill viaduct (one of the @edenviaducts7277 ) crosses the Scandel Beck at almost 30m high at it’s highest point.
There are 14 arches and a total length of 170m.
If British rail had their way, the viaduct would have been demolished. But instead it was listed and saved and British Rail even contributed the cost of demolition towards the repair of the structure.
It’s thanks to dedicated volunteers and the tireless work of the trusts involved that we can enjoy walking over it today.
The railway switches to the other side of the valley as we then pass the lime kilns of the Smardale lime works. The ovens and workings still present .

Drone view of Royston, Barnsley June 2017
A birds eye view of Royston. What a lovely village it is. The church is amazing.
Trying out my friends new DJI Drone. We do need practice but still decent footage.
29/Jun/2021. South Elmsall and Moorthorpe with drone.
After popping over to Pontefract I decided to head home via Doncaster.
Seeing as the weather was good I decided to get off the local service to Leeds at South Elmsall. I walked the short distance to Moorthorpe where I flew the drone.
Graveyard Beauty - Cemeteries of Tavistock, Devon, UK.
Exploring old churches and cemeteries is something I love to do. Some find them morbid creepy places but I feel quite the opposite. Churches and graveyards can tell you so much about the social history of the local area, and older ones in particular are filled with beautiful monuments and memorials, and are also often a haven for wildlife and insects.
This is a film I took of two cemeteries in Tavistock, Devon.
The old Victorian cemetery.
The main cemetery which is still used for interment.
The memorial for Harry Rogers who was 19 when he lost his life in the Titanic disaster.
Apologies for the dodgy camera work. I filmed it on an iPhone which is a bit of a pain to hold steady.
I had to replace the audio as most of it was filled with wind and traffic noise, even through neither was that loud at the time of recording.

Barnsley Station 26/8/19
We visit the major interchange at Barnsley, well a big interchange between the station and the adjacent bus station. The station sees a good mix of passenger services heading to various parts of South and West Yorkshire as well as some more long distance services to Nottingham. The station sees little to no freight services and as a result we captured none of these. We also include some footage we captured however never used it.
We are diving back through the archives to see how much footage we had recorded but never was used so please don't mind the sporadic placing of the videos at the moment!
