Crumlin Road Gaol Tour - Things to Do in Belfast, NI
Crumlin Road Jail or Gaol is located very close to Belfast City Centre and a visit is a must if you are in Belfast. Book a tour and get an amazing insight into what life was like inside the prison from Victorian to recent times (up until 1996) (
If you are willing to hear tales of terror, tragedies, and escapes with experienced and knowledgeable tour guides who will tell you different real stories from the jail and who will also share some of the personal experiences which they might have witnessed before - stories which you might get from one tour guide and not the other.
Crumlin Road Gaol or jail is one of the oldest jails to be found in Northern Ireland and which is no longer working but has been transformed into a touristic place where people could go and experience the life of the prisoners back in the old times as well as know about the history of the place and the rooms and tunnel related to it.
Her Majesty's Prison Belfast (HMP) which is famously known as the Crumlin Road Gaol and which is also referred to as The Crum, has been listed as an A grade building because of its archaeological and historical significance. This 19th century building has one thing that makes it unique and different which is the tunnel that links the courthouse to the hanging cell, the Governor's office, the hospital as well as the graveyard; making it easier for the transport of the prisoners to the courthouse.
During the 150 years of the Crumlin Road Gaol time, there were different murderers, suffragettes and loyalists, and republican prisoners held inside before it was shut for the last time in 1996 and turned afterwards to a touristic attraction that the public could visit and check the whole place from the inside.
You will not walk through the place on your own but there are guided tours which will last for about 70 minutes; this tour will take you through the whole experience of the place and the different important events that it has gone through in the past.
There are different things to experience inside the Crumlin Road Gaol in addition to the famous tunnel, such as the C-Wing in which people will get the chance to see how the prison life was like back then and know the secret that lies behind the walls, there is also the Condemned Man's Cell in which 17 men spent their last days before their execution, and there is also the gravesite in the building where the remains of 15 of these executed men are still found until this day.
These are different rooms and things to check inside the Crumlin Gaol and which highlight the significance of this place, making it one attraction destination for lots of people to decide visiting it while being in Belfast city, Northern Ireland.
The working hours of the Crumlin Road Prison are all days of the week except some big holidays, such as the Christmas, New Year's Day, as well as the Boxing Day, and the first tour usually starts at about 10 in the morning and the last one is around 4:30. The ticket fee differs according to the age; adults will pay 9 pounds, children less than 5 years will enter free of charge and those older will pay 6.50 pounds, or else families could buy a family ticket which will cost 25 pounds.
One of the million things we like about visiting some of the historical places in Northern Ireland - and around the world - apart from being historical and carrying different stories within is those restaurants or coffee shops serving you inside the place to take your rest and at the same time enjoy a drink or even have your lunch.
When it comes to the Crumlin Road Gaol, there is the Cuffs Bar and Grill ( which could serve you food and drinks after the 70 minutes tour and the different expressions of amazement and astonishment which you might have had inside the place. After visiting The Cuffs Restaurant, we consider it the best when it comes to burgers; they serve the best juicy burger one could have in town! (
We have gone through this tour at the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast and we actually enjoyed trying to picture how the prisoners used to spend their days inside; it was thrilling, yet it was interesting to a great extent.
There are different things to visit in Belfast in addition to the Crumlin Road Jail and which all stand in the list of buildings that have their long history, such as visiting Belfast City Hall ( in which people could also come across the garden where Titanic's memorial is situated ( there is also the famous St. Anne's Cathedral which also happens to be one of the most famous Belfast attractions that one should visit ( as well as other places and landmarks which one will choose according to the length of the trip and his/her likes and dislikes.
Did you enjoy the Crum?

Visiting the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast City, NI
Do you have a plan regarding the things you are going to do in Belfast when your vacation starts? Since we are recently trying to visit the most important attractions and landmarks to be placed on your list, we decided to visit the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and suggest it to those coming to the city very soon (
Crumlin Road Gaol - or as it is sometimes referred to as Her Majesty's Prison Belfast - has been built as a replacement for the County Gaol on Antrim street in Carrickfergus; this jail was known as County Gaol for Antrim and it was constructed of black balsalt rock on ten acres at the bottom of the Crumlin Road (
The Crumlin Road Gaol was one of the most advanced prisons back when it was first built, which was built within a five sided wall and the four wings are up to four storeys in height and fan off from the central area which was known as The Circle.
When the Crumlin Road Jail was built, it was actually brought to life depending on the idea of separate cells, which means that the prisoners will be separated from one another without any kind of communication, but later on it started to put up to three prisoners in the same cell. The prison as a whole was ready to receive between 500 and 550 prisoners.
There were many famous prisoners placed in the Crumlin Road Gaol back in the old days since it was open until the end of the Troubles period ( before its doors were totally closed in 1994 for almost two years and before it was transformed to a touristic attraction in Belfast for the tourists to come and know more about its history.
The Crumlin Road Gaol is a 19th century A listed jail that welcomes lots of tourists nowadays who come inside to try and picture the life of those prisoners who spent a great part of their lives there. The guided tour inside the jail will bring the visitors through the cells and will also take them through the tunnel that links the courthouse on the other side to the Governor's office, the hanging cell, the hospital and the graveyard; this tunnel was used to take the prisoners to the courthouse (
The guided tour which usually lasts for 70 minutes inside the jail is the most famous thing related to this place that turned into a touristic attraction, but there are actually some events and concerts that are held inside this place as well; private events and public concerts.
In this prison which worked for almost 150 years, visitors will step inside to experience how the life of those murderers, suffragettes and loyalist, and republican prisoners were passing the days inside; they will be taken through the C-Wing, the Condemned Man's Cell where 17 men spent their last days before being executed, and also they will visit the gravesite where the remains of 15 men of the executed still remains.
It was interesting to walk in the same place where the prisoners used to spend many days of their lives and also the place that witnessed births, deaths, marriages, and lots of other things due to the inability for those prisoners to get outside; and yes, there were females being placed in this jail as well.
We could say that this could go as one of the tourist attractions that people could place as one of the things to do in Belfast because for a specific period of time it was considered one of the most famous jails in Europe and which has been holding prisoners for many years.
We enjoyed the guided tour we have taken inside the Crumlin Road Gaol and we might even think about coming back in the future. Unfortunately the courthouse is not open and is not welcoming any visitors because it is undergoing some reconstructions to surprise us with a new place in the coming years.
It is always interesting to get to eat in the same touristic place which you are visiting or even close to the area and since you will be visiting the Crumlin Road Gaol, you could try The Cuffs Bar & Grill ( which is found inside the place and which offers the best burger in town as well as other dishes, desserts, and things to drink ( even the name of the restaurant gives you the feeling that you are having your prison's meal.
The Crumlin Road Gaol was one of the different other touristic destinations and attractions in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which we were lucky enough to plan our schedule and head to in order to check and visit. From the other famous landmarks of Belfast, you could visit Belfast City Hall ( you could go and check the famous St. Anne's Cathedral ( or go and visit the famous Belfast Castle (
