What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Deene Park / Castle, the seat of the Brudenell family since 1514,[1] is a country manor located 5 miles (8 kilometres) northeast of Corby in the county of Northamptonshire, England. The hall itself is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 14th century which has been modified several times since then to create the current structure.[2]
Seven of the Brudenell family were Earls of Cardigan – the most notable being the 7th Earl who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava (1854). The 7th Earl died childless in 1868, and while the Earldom of Cardigan merged with the Marquessate of Ailesbury, the Deene Park estate passed, after the death in 1915 of his widow, to the descendants of his second cousin Ernest Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury.[3]
The estate was inherited by its current owner, Robert Brudenell, in 2014; he is the son of Edmund and Marian Brudenell, who devoted their lives to the rehabilitation of Deene Park and are largely responsible for the estate's present appearance.[4] They are descended from the 3rd Marquess's son Commodore Lord Robert Brudenell-Bruce RN. Lord Robert's son George, Edmund's father, inherited the family seat along with the family's remaining estates in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire,[5] and reverted the family name back to Brudenell by Royal Licence.[6]
History:
7th Earl of Cardigan
The manor of Deene belonged to Westminster Abbey; annual rent of £18 was paid until 1970.[7] The manor house has been expanded around its courtyard from its sixteenth-century core, represented by its great hall, which was given its screen panelling and fireplace in 1571.[8] The early 19th-century Bow Room contains the Brudenell library, collected in the 16th century by Sir Thomas Tresham and his son-in-law, Sir Thomas Brudenell, 1st Earl of Cardigan, though the collection no longer includes the manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales[9] or the last copy of Magna Carta in private hands.[10]
The house contains furnishings of different periods and portraits, including works by Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Relics of the Crimean War include the uniforms of Lord Cardigan and the head and tail of his charger, Ronald.
The large gardens designed by David Nightingale Hicks feature a parterre overlooking the lake, and a newly planted avenue.
The manor is located in the countryside not far from the Harringworth Viaduct and is surrounded by historic villages and hamlets. St Peter's Church, Deene, in the grounds, has the funeral monuments of the Brudenells.
Throughout the 1990s, Deene Park hosted the annual August bank holiday Greenbelt Festival.

Corby Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 20 miles southeast of Leicester, is the town of Corby.
The name 'Corby' has Danish origins. In the 8th century the Danes invaded and settled in the area. It literally translates to 'Kori's village/settlement' (Kori presumably being the name of the leader).
In 1226 Corby was granted a market charter by Henry III. It remained for several centuries a small village up until the 20th century. It is believed that the local area had been mined for iron ore as far back as Roman times. By 1910 an ironstone works had been established in Corby. In 1934 the Scottish steel firm Stewarts and Lloyds located to Corby attracting an influx of workers from around the country. This included a large Scottish contingent who have stayed in the town to this day, at one point earning it the nickname, Little Scotland.
The first steel was produced in 1935. The steel works soon dominated the town. The population grew from around 1,500 in 1931 to around 12,000 in 1939. During World War II, Corby steel works produced the steel tubes used in Pipe Line Under the Ocean (PLUTO). This was essential in supplying fuel to Allied forces on the European continent.
In 1950 Corby was designated a new town. This was a scheme to rehouse those whose homes had been destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Hence the town centre of Corby contains predominantly 20th century architecture.
In 1967 Stewarts and Lloyds became part of British Steel. In 1978 the EU (or European Economic Community as it was known at the time) adopted the Davignon Plan. This was a scheme to reform the steel industry with the aim of placing a cap on steel's production capacity. At the time the Corby steel plant was Europe's largest and employed 4,000 people. British Steel, who also had plants in Sheffield, Teesside, South Wales and Scunthorpe, decided in 1979 that Corby had to close. This resulted in a loss of around 11,000 jobs in the town with over 30% unemployment by 1981.
It took over thirty years for Corby to recover from the steelworks closure. In 1994 Corby Power Station opened and in 2001 Rockingham Motor Speedway opened on the site of the British Steel works. It served as a motorsport venue up until its closure in 2019. Industrial estates on the outskirts of town have helped bring unemployment levels back down.
Scottish rock band Big Country referenced Corby in their 1984 song Steeltown, the title track of the album of the same name.

'Around Corby' Two Day Thru-Hike | Northamptonshire | Stanion to Cottingham | Part 1
Earlier this year, I attempted the Around Corby trail starting and finishing in the small town of Stanion just outside of Corby in Northamptonshire. The route was meant to be 31 miles but ended up being 36 miles which I completed over two days. It was tough going, and it rained heavily on day one. I wasn't able to film much face-to-face footage with the camera as I was trying to keep it dry from the wet weather. Apologies for the lack of quality footage on this one; sorry!
I camped at Ganders Goat Farm in Cottingham. It is a working farm with only a few pitches for backpackers, unsuitable for groups or campervans, etc. The campsite was lovely, well equipped and excellent value for money. Fresh water, toilets and showers on site, plus lots of friendly farm animals to talk to.
Trail: Stanion - Brigstock - Weldon - Kirby Hall - Gretton - Rockingham - Great Easton - Cottingham (Day 1 only).
