Dominican Republic
Country in the Caribbean
The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti to the west. It's known for its beaches, resorts and golfing. Its terrain comprises rainforest, savannah and highlands, including Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s tallest mountain. Capital city Santo Domingo has Spanish landmarks like the Gothic Catedral Primada de America dating back 5 centuries in its Zona Colonial district. ― Google

Santo Domingo
Capital of the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the Caribbean's oldest cities. Its walled, cobblestoned historic core, the Zona Colonial, has buildings that date to the 1500s, including the cathedral, which was the first built in the New World. On the cafe-lined Plaza de España is the Alcázar de Colón palace. It’s now one of the city’s many museums, displaying notable medieval and Renaissance art. ― Google

SW Dominican Republic Road Trip - Bonao to Constanza to Jarabacoa - Part 9 of 10
Our team headed up from Santo Domingo through Bonao to Constanza and ended up for a nice evening in Jarabacoa. If you thought of the Dominican Republic as only beaches, this should be eye opening. The Jarabacoa region is a mountainous area full of rapid rivers, waterfalls and mountain scenery. The temperatures are generally 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the coastal regions and a welcome change from the tropical weather we experience in Cabrera and most of the other coastal regions of the DR.

Weekend Road Trip in the Dominican Republic: Jarabacoa & Constanza 2023
Weekend Road Trip in the Dominican Republic: Jarabacoa & Constanza 2023
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No matter how tropical our destination is, we always seem to seek out the mountains amongst the beaches. What’s Up, Unconventionalists? I’m Cassidy, and my family and I have been living in the Dominican Republic this winter while our kids attend a school here. During the school week, we are stationed in Cabrera, on the Northern Coast of the island, but we’ve been using the weekends to explore other parts of the island! This weekend we are headed to the mountainous area of the island: Jarabacoa and Constanza! We’ve been using Maps.Me to guide us around the island since we didn’t purchase sim cards and can use their maps offline; however, the offline map doesn’t adjust its ETA with current traffic or road conditions, meaning the ETA is often WAY OFF…
Since we got in super late Friday night and have to head back to Cabrera Sunday morning, we are keen to make the most of our 1 full day in the area! We hit the ground running this morning at Salto de Baiguate – a local waterfall! This 25 meter waterfall is a majestic site about 15 or 20 minutes outside of town. When we pulled up, we saw 4 or 5 tour buses, so we knew we wouldn’t be alone. The walk to the waterfall is short and sweet, and totally worth it to see this gorgeous waterfall! However, there were so many people there that we barely had standing room at the bottom of the falls.
After leaving the Salto de Baiguate, we headed towards Constanza, about an hour up a steep and winding road. This area is famous for supplying the island with fresh food and particularly famous for “La Ruta de Fresas'' or “The Strawberry Route”. We ate our body weight in strawberries in Constanza! We popped into a local Vivero, or nursery, and learned about the local herbs and different types of orchids. Then we headed back to Jarabacoa from Constanza for the night. There was an awesome pizza restaurant there that had a huge playground for the kids! We are continually surprised by how family-friendly every place in Latin America seems to be!
To be honest, I would not recommend this as a weekend trip. Whether you’re coming from the Northern Coast or from Santo Domingo, the drive is TOO long to spend just a weekend in the Jarabacoa and Constanza area. We drove alot and didn’t feel like we saw much in the area.
Did you know there were mountains in the Caribbean?

Exploring Constanza, Dominican Republic
I'm sure you've heard of Punta Cana, but have you heard of Constanza, in the heart of the Dominican Republic?
Think 7,500 feet above sea level, hiking in lush national parks and cloud forests, staring into a horizon of pine trees, vegetable farms and flower plantations as far as the eye can see, tasting fresh strawberries and warming up by the chimney in a mountain lodge... without doubt, one of the most unique places to visit in the Caribbean!

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Like You've NEVER Seen It! 🤩 Constanza is Breathtaking
In this video we're in the mountains of the Dominican Republic in the highest town in the Caribbean called Constanza.
To start of the video we wake up above the clouds in our mountain villa. Afterwards we visit a nearby waterfall, Salto de Aquas Blancas. After exploring we head back into the town of Constanza where we stop at a tapas restaurant called La Esquina GastroBar.
We head back to our villa rental (
and give a full tour of the two bedroom villa. Later we make a fire and get in the hot tub.
The next day we take a tour of a local strawberry farm called Fresas Franchi. Constanza is well known for its agriculture and strawberries are one of the main fruits grown there.

Constanza Dominican Republic - Bountiful Harvests In The Mountains - Part 1
Constanza Dominican Republic is not only the source of countless bountiful harvests of fresh vegetables and fruits, it is also a feast for your eyes. The team headed out to explore the mountains and valleys surrounding Constanza. This was our first foray into this area and we were not disappointed. As you will see in this video and part 2, everywhere you look you are treated to breathtaking mountain panoramas and hillside farms. Endless farms of cabbages, strawberry's, apples, peaches, garlic and potatoes... to name a few. Constanza is also home to a wide variety of flowers, roses and other landscape plants.
I would not recommend this trip through rocky and sometimes almost washed out roads without a 4 wheel vehicle, or maybe a truck with larger tires. But with the right vehicle, this trip from Cabrera over to Constanza is a real treat for the eyes.

SW Dominican Republic Road Trip - Barahona to Constanza - Part 8 of 10
Today we head up into the heart of the mountain farmland in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. The team takes the excellent road up from Barahona toward Constanza then heads up the rock road from Sabana Larga into Constanza. This trek up the rock road through the National Park turned out to be quite a challenge and ultimately that road was closed. So we had to turn around, head back to the main highway and then take the alternate (much smoother) road up the national highway, Autopista Duarte, toward Constanza.

Constanza Dominican Republic - Bountiful Harvests In The Mountains - Part 2
Continuing on the second part of our trip over the mountains from Cabrera on the coast to the mountain town of Constanza Dominican Republic. The team took a couple days off to explore the Constanza region up in the mountains. What a treat to see miles and miles of lush green farms hugging the mountainsides for as far as you can see. It is not hard to imagine that this cooler mountain region of the Dominican Republic supplies many of the fruits and vegetables that are consumed all over this island nation. The farms are lush with crops, many of them tended with oxen on yokes pulling plows.

Constanza
Constanza is a complete departure from what you expect to find in the Caribbean, and that’s precisely why you’d visit. Tucked at 4,000 feet above sea level, it’s the highest altitude inhabited town in the region. It’s also the heart of the DR’s agriculture. Drive along fields of chayote, potatoes, and even strawberries. Stop at a local colmado or corner shop and order a strawberry milkshake or batida. Go hiking or biking in the hills to take in the fresh mountain air. One of the most spectacular national parks and birding locations in the country lies here at Valle Nuevo National Park. Hike its trails, lined with giant pine trees and ferns, and warm up from the cold temperatures by a chimney when you overnight in a mountain cabin..
