Awesome Small Towns in Indiana

Whoops! I forgot to rotate a picture...

My brother, my dad, and I went on a trip to Knightstown, IN on June 2, 2012, and visited several other cool small towns on the way there and back home. These towns include New Castle, Rushville, Connersville, Greenfield, Straughn, Dunreith, Greenfield, and a few others I'm not sure what they were. XD

New Castle was a surprisingly amazing town. It had a Second Empire 1866 courthouse designed by Isaac Hodgson (who designed the original courthouse in Indianapolis that's now gone :( and several other Indiana courthouses that still remain). We also came across a semaphore signal by the train station. One of our favorite discoveries was the Art Moderne-style armory. It was built in 1938, and has been empty for a couple years. THEY'D BETTER KEEP THAT BUILDING UP OR ELSE!!!!

While in Knightstown, we visited the gym where the movie Hoosiers took place. It's still an active gym and it has a few movie props inside. We also got to see the amazing Second Empire Knightstown Academy, and I ended up buying a large can of Empire State Motor Oil for just under $20.

The 10 Poorest Counties in the State of Indiana

Every state has poverty-stricken communities, as well as affluent areas. There are the haves and the have-nots. In many communities across America, people are struggling to survive. They don't know where their next meal is coming from, or if they'll get to keep a roof over their heads. It's getting harder and harder to make it in this world. In this video, we are taking a looking at the ten counties in Indiana that have the lowest median household income.

Vincennes, Indiana: All the Hidden Places

Vincennes is a mysterious, beautiful, quiet place, along the Wabash River, that never ceases to amaze me with its feeling of presence. It is clearly, one of my favorite places to go and clear my mind.

But it’s more than just a place to unwind! There’s an ancient Native American burial mound. A city built by the French as part of “New France”. The largest battlefield monument in the United States. Former home of President William Henry Harrison, and 1800’s era buildings. The oldest government building in the United States. The oldest Catholic parish and University in Indiana. The cathedral has an underground crypt that holds the first four bishops of Vincennes. Two world class museums and a beautiful waterfront.

This is Vincennes, Indiana, the historic capitol of the Northwest Territory, a place where you can feel the past, legends, and is one of Indiana’s absolute must see’s!

ADDENDUM: I’ve been informed that a handicap ramp has been installed at the George Rogers Clark Memorial! This allows everyone to enjoy this amazing structure!

Amazing Mounds State Park

Mounds State Park is amazing! In this presentation of Amazing Indiana we will visit Mounds State Park near Anderson, Indiana. This state park contains Indian Mounds that were built by the Hopewell People over two thousand years ago. We will explore the mounds and see just what a building feat they would have been for the Native American people who lived in this part of Indiana.

The park has numerous hiking trails, some of which run along the White River.

The park was the site of an old amusement park, known as, Mounds Park. The park closed in 1929. There are some scattered remnants of the park.

The park is a great place to see birds and other wildlife.

Mounds is an easy drive from both Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. It's all part of Amazing Indiana.

State Route 52 Ghost Road and Phantom Bridge # 2, Cedar Grove, Indiana

info@HistoryInYourOwnBackyard.com
812-623-5727

Traveling west on U.S. Route 52 just a half of a mile east of Cedar Grove, Indiana the road takes a gentle turn to the right but looking straight ahead, you’ll notice a gravel driveway. Apparently that gravel driveway is the original road that led into Cedar Grove before U.S. Route 52 was constructed around 1934. Looking over plat maps dating back to 1867, I found the original road went straight before doing a soft zig zag into Cedar Grove proper. Along this section of abandoned roadway is a small one lane concrete phantom bridge about 12 feet long and spanning what appears to be more of a ditch than a creek. The bridge was most likely built around 1910 and from what I can tell hasn’t seen any real automobile traffic since the 1930s outside of a tractor or two.

In the winter months the bridge is easily viewed from State Route 52. For a small town, Cedar Grove has quite a few historic bridges past and present with this one destined to be around for a couple hundred years if not disturbed by man.

Abandoned Indiana One Room School House from 1895

While totally hidden in overgrowth in the summer, in the winter this long abandoned 121 year old one room schoolhouse is finally accessible. A huge thanks to my buddy Jason from AbandonedSC who found this location for me. A TRULY amazing building and incredible to see it still standing intact as it is!

Thistlethwaite Falls | Waterfall in Richmond Indiana | Scenic Attraction Near I-70

Thistlethwaite Falls is a waterfall created in the 1800s to provide more power to Timothy Thistlethwaite's sawmill.

This waterfall is very easy to reach. From I-70, head south on US-27, aka Chester Boulevard. After 1.5 miles, turn right on Waterfall Road. This is a narrow, curving road. After a half mile, you will cross a bridge just above the falls. There is a parking area on the left just beyond the bridge. A trail leads to the top of the falls, and an old stairway leads down to the base. You can also walk across the bridge and walk down to the base of the falls on the opposite side. Be careful cross the bridge, as the road is narrow and there is no shoulder.

Blue skies & Skyline Chili - Brookville, IN (USA)

Nick & Court head to Brookville, Indiana on a recent Backroad Trip. Brookville, Indiana is a scenic town within the Whitewater Valley. There's also a large lake nearby named promptly, Brookville Lake that sees many tourists per year for boating and whatnot. The downtown area is as cute as could be with diners, historic homes, picturesque backdrops, and the beautiful hills/rivers of southern Indiana. On this trip, no highways were taken, only sideroads and small town country drivin'!
