Concarneau Travel Guide - Best Things to do in France
#Concarneau (Breton: Konk-Kerne, meaning Bay of Cornouaille) is a commune in the #Finistère department of #Brittany in north-western #France. Concarneau is bordered to the west by the Baie de La Forêt. The town has two distinct areas: the modern town on the mainland and the medieval Ville Close, a walled town on a long island in the centre of the harbour. Historically, the old town was a centre of shipbuilding. The Ville Close is now devoted to tourism with many restaurants and shops aimed at tourists.
As well as being France’s third most important fishing port, Concarneau has other assets that make it a very popular summer resort. The main draw is the quaint ville close (walled town) followed by some lovely sandy beaches and a lively maritime festival in August.
Concarneau has made its living from the fishing industry for hundreds of years and the town remains an important centre: more than 100,000 tonnes of tuna are caught each year by Concarneau-based boats. It’s possible for tourists to visit the fish auction, canneries and also sometimes to assist the deep-sea fishermen to unload their catch. But more adventurous sorts might like to join an organised trip on an old sardine boat to try their own hand.
The ville close is without doubt Concarneau’s most popular tourist attraction. This old stone fortified ‘town’ has just a few narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants, where geraniums tumble from window boxes. Take a walk around the ramparts for spectacular views over the area. Near the entrance to the ville close is the Musée de la Pêche, where visitors can learn all about the fishing industry and visit an old trawler.
Several scenic walks start in Concarneau, such as the pushchair-friendly route through Kérandon wood, but the most pleasant is probably the coastal path from Quai de la Croix, past the splendid villas, to the Sables Blancs beach. Here, in July and August, you’ll find water- and land-based activities to suit adults and kids alike.
On the outskirts of Concarneau is the Château de Keriolet, a fine example of 19th-century Gothic architecture, part of which dates back to the 15th century. Restored to its former glory, the house is now open for guided visits.
One of Brittany’s most colourful and authentic festivals takes place in Concarneau in August: Le Festival des Filets Bleus. This festival of ‘blue nets’ celebrates the town’s fishing industry with traditional music and dancing, sea shanties and a smorgasbord of fishy fare.

A walled island town with ramparts built in the Middle Ages cobbled streets & half-timbered houses

The town has two distinct areas: the modern town on the mainland and the medieval Ville Close, a walled town on a long island in the centre of the harbour. Historically, the old town was a centre of shipbuilding. The Ville Close is now devoted to tourism with many restaurants and shops aimed at tourists. However restraint has been shown in resisting the worst excesses of souvenir shops. Also in the Ville Close is the fishing museum. The Ville Close is connected to the town by a drawbridge and at the other end a ferry to the village of Lanriec on the other side of the harbour.
In August the town holds the annual Fête des Filets Bleus (Festival of the blue nets). The festival named after the traditional blue nets of Concarneaus fishing fleet, is a celebration of Breton and pan-Celtic culture. Such festival can occur throughout Brittany but the Filets Bleus is one of the oldest and largest attracting in excess of a thousand costumed participants with many times the number of observers. In 2005, the 100th festival was celebrated.
Concarneau was also the setting for Belgian mystery writer Georges Simenons 1931 novel Le Chien jaune (The Yellow Dog), featuring his celebrated sleuth Maigret. source : wikipedia

Troisième commune du Finistère par sa population, chef-lieu d'un canton et d'une communauté d'agglomération, Concarneau, qui inclut les anciennes communes de Beuzec-Conq et Lanriec, est une ville située sur la côte cornouaillaise dans la baie de La Forêt.
La ville s'est constituée au Moyen Âge à partir de la ville close située dans l'estuaire du Moros. Cet abri naturel a permis le développement du septième port de pêche français en tonnage débarqué et d'importants chantiers navals.

Concarneau est une commune du département du Finistère.
Ancienne place forte de Bretagne, la Ville Close est un site exceptionnel fortifié entre les ports de pêche et de plaisance. Berceau de Concarneau, elle a traversé les siècles à l’abri des remparts en conservant un riche patrimoine architectural. Le long des quais, l’identité maritime s’affirme : criée, chantiers de constructions navales, pontons accueillant des bateaux de toute nature y compris des voiliers de course le temps d’un départ de transat. Ville entièrement tournée vers la mer, nichée au fond d’une des plus belles baies de Bretagne, les plages sont accessibles à pied en longeant la corniche. C’est un lieu privilégié pour les activités balnéaires, nautiques et de thalassothérapie.

It's a lively place in summer with lots of crêperies! It is a medieval, walled city built in the middle ages. I love to learn about French culture and history as well as visit beautiful villages here in France. We'll learn more about the interesting parts of the fortress and watch a local band play folk music.
We'll also sample some wine and french cheese and have a beautiful sunset dinner at the beach.

Knapp 2000 Kilometer misst die Küstenlinie der Bretagne. Auf ihrem Weg rund um die westlichste Region Frankreichs nimmt sie jede Bucht, jeden Strand und jeden Hafen mit. Einmal die komplette Küste entlang reisen, war schon immer mein großer Traum. Da ich kein halbes Jahr Zeit für eine Wanderung auf dem GR34 – dem Küstenwanderweg – habe, nehme ich einen Mietwagen und fahre die versteckten Perlen der Küste ab. Immer auf der Suche nach den besten Naturhighlights.
Dieser Bretagne Roadtrip führt von Saint-Malo nach Guérande – von Nordost nach Südost, die gesamte Küste entlang. Unterwegs jagt ein Naturhighlight das nächste. Mit dem Fahrrad geht es durch Küstendörfer und verlassene Wälder, auf dem Kajak über Flüsse und zu Fuß auf einem der beeindruckendsten Wanderwege Europas entlang.
Zwischendurch geht es mal unter das Wasser beim Tauchen oder mit der Kraft des Windes beim Windsurfen übers Wasser. Diese Reise verspricht viele Aktivitäten, kleine Abenteuer und ist genau das Richtige für junge Aktivreisende.

Day 9 of 17 - 20th May: In the morning we take a boat in Morgat, where we look for some grottos along the coast. Then we continue to Cap de la Chevre. Well, as this place is not as beautiful like the one we visited yesterday (Pen Hir), we move on quickly to Concarneau.
