[EN] Colle di Val d'Elsa is a town situated 15 km southeast of San Gimignano. Its old part, the so-called the Upper Town (because it is situated on a hill), is particularly interesting in terms of history and architecture. You can get to the New Town from there by elevator or by walking the Via Pozzo Tondo. From the highest point of the old town you can see a beautiful panorama of the Tuscan hills with vineyards. The old town itself is something of a medieval village with buildings from different eras and ages. It is very quiet and peaceful - if you visit it you won't regret it.

La sua parte vecchia, la cosiddetta Città Alta (perché situata su una collina), è particolarmente interessante dal punto di vista storico e architettonico. Da lì è possibile raggiungere la Città Nuova con l'ascensore o percorrendo Via Pozzo Tondo. Dal punto più alto del centro storico si può vedere un bellissimo panorama delle colline toscane con vigneti. Il centro storico stesso è qualcosa di un villaggio medievale con edifici di epoche ed epoche diverse. È molto tranquillo e silenzioso - se lo visiti non te ne pentirai.

Colle di Val d'Elsa
Colle di Val d'Elsa means Hill of Elsa Valley, where Elsa is the name of the river which crosses it. The area was settled by man from at least the 4th millennium BC, but first mentions of the city are from the 9th century AD. In 1269 it was the seat of a famous battle during the wars of Guelphs and Ghibellines and in 1479 it was besieged by Neapolitan troops. From the 14th century it was a possession of Florence and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until the unification of Italy in 1860. In the 20th century it became an important industrial center. During World War II it was bombed by Allied aircraft.

Only a short drive from Florence or Siena, this town will amaze you if you get a chance to visit it. Monteriggioni is a comune in the province of Siena in the Italian region Tuscany. It borders on the communes of Casole d'Elsa, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Poggibonsi, Siena and Sovicille.[2] The town is architecturally and culturally significant; it hosts several piazzas, and is referenced in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, as well as a playable locale in Ubisoft's video game installments Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, located on a natural hillock, built by the Sienese in 1214–19 as a front line in their wars against Florence,[3] by assuming command of the Via Cassia running through the Val d'Elsa and Val Staggia to the west.
During the conflicts between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defensive fortification. It also withstood many attacks from both the Florentines and the forces of the Bishop of Volterra. In 1554 the Sienese were able to place control of the town's garrison to Giovannino Zeti, who had been exiled from Florence. In 1554, in an act of reconciliation with the Medicis, Zeti simply handed the keys of the town over to the Medicean forces - considered a great betrayal by the town's people. From Wikipedia

This enchanting site is tucked away in central Tuscany, close to Siena, at a small village named Colle di Val d’Elsa. At the end of the 2.5-kilometer trail, you are rewarded with the 15-meter high Diborrato Waterfall. Unlike the Saturnia Hot Springs in Tuscany, the waters of the Elsa Trail are cool and perfect for a dip after a hike on a warm day.

In case you're wondering, here is a video of the Sentierelsa Trail (Elsa Trail) in Colle di Val d'Elsa, Italy. We took the bus from Florence and hiked from the northern entrance close to Ponte di Spugna to the bottom, exiting at Ponte di San Marziale. It was a great hike with unbelievable views of crystal blue water
