Fine carvings of Gupta period excavated from here. Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is the major attraction over here.

The hills in the vicinity were famous as abodes of sages and mendicants in the ancient past and certainly continued to be so in the early 7th century A.D., when Hieun Tsang, the Chinese traveller, while exploring the ancient city of Champa[ii], remarked “To the east of the city 140 or 150 li, on the south of the river Ganges, is a solitary detached rock, craggy and steep, and surrounded by water. On the top of the peak is a Deva temple; the divine spirits exhibit many miracles (spiritual indications) here. By piercing the rock, houses have been made; by leading the streams (through each), there is a continual flow of water. There are wonderful trees (forming) flowering woods; the large rocks and dangerous precipices are the resort of men of wisdom and virtue; those who go there to see the place are reluctant to return”. Later, Tibetan monks like Nag Tcho (1039 A.D.) and Dharmasvamin (1234 A.D.), too described the scenic aspects and also left behind interesting accounts of difficulties then faced by travellers in crossing the Ganga, as the dangers arose not only from the then prevailing outlaws, but, also from the presence of numerous violent crocodiles.

Kahalgaon is a town and a municipality in Bhagalpur district in the state of Bihar, India. It is located close to the Vikramashila, which was once a famous center of Buddhist learning, along with Nalanda during the Pala dynasty.

Jangira is famous for the two great sacred rocks in the Ganga river. One of the rocks is pictured here and has a temple on its summit. Large boulders on this island are covered with carvings in high relief representing Vishnu and Shiva under their different aspects. They date mainly from the 8th century.

By air
The nearest airport is Deoghar Airport which is 135 km away. From Deoghar regular flights are available for major Indian cities. Alternatively, one may come to Patna Airport. This route is generally preferred by one travelling from southern or western part of country.

Kahalgaon railway station, one of the oldest stations of Bihar, serves the Howrah–Kiul loop line. The city is situated on the broad-gauge loop line of Eastern Railway. Kahalgaon is well connected to all cities by train.
By road
Kahalgaon is connected by a network of national and state highways, along with district and rural roads. National Highway 80 (NH 80) runs from the Mokama–Farakka via Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon. It links directly with Patna, via Begusarai and Khagaria.
