Cohoes, NY: The Forgotten City Of The Capital Region
Cohoes, NY: The Forgotten City Of The Capital Region
This film discusses some of the history of Cohoes, NY, why we think it's forgotten & where it stands today. Cohoes is a small city which is part of Albany County in Upstate New York. When it comes to Capital Region tourism, we don't ever hear about Cohoes. Just look around...there's a lot of empty, abandoned & boarded up buildings all over town. This tells me that it is most definitely a dying city. In November 2017 there was a massive fire that destroyed an entire block on Remsen Street.
There is a flip side to this coin. You can see some efforts to revitalize the city. It isn't gentrifying though.

As we mentioned in our earlier video, due to COVID, these days our traveling is very much restricted to tri-state area. This time we went to see Cohoes Falls and Albany city, which is like 3 hrs drive from NYC.
We never knew that there is such a big and beautiful falls close to us. We simply loved Cohoes falls. In width, it is ~300m (whereas Niagara falls is ~1200m). In comparison with width, Cohoes is 1/4th of Niagara. On top of its original beauty, there was fall color all around Falls View Park. The surrounding was not crowded at all. Not sure if it is because COVID only, or it is underrated as well. There are ample parking spots available. The Cohoes Falls resembles a small version of Niagara Falls on the Mohawk River at Cohoes, NY just north of the capital of New York. Water falls 60-90 feet depending on the season and width of water coverage as it is squeezed between two cliffs.
The river was dammed above the falls in 1831 to provide water for the Erie Canal which was built on the north side of the river and it circumvents the falls. This was the final and steepest drop in the journey from Buffalo to the Hudson River. This system of locks was slow to navigate and helped give rise to the first regular passenger steam train service in North America (The DeWitt Clinton). The train was built allowing passengers on the Erie Canal to get off at Schenectady and travel directly to Albany, bypassing the locks. The 1831 dam also powered Harmony Mills which became the largest cotton mill in the US at the time.
From there, we went to see Albany city as well, which was like 20 mins drive from the falls. The city seemed very peaceful and very organized. People were well-behaved and streets were very clean. We stopped by New York State Capitol as well. Sitting majestically atop Albany’s State Street hill, the New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880s. The building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur, built by hand of solid masonry over a period of 32 years.

Number1: The Spindle City
Cohoes earned the nickname Spindle City
during the 19th century because of its prominent textile industry.
The city's factories were essential to its economy,
processing cotton primarily sourced from the Deep South,
which helped Cohoes thrive during the industrial revolution.
Number2: Historical Settlement
Before the Revolutionary War,
Cohoes was a quiet hamlet, mostly composed of scattered farms.
The land was relatively underdeveloped until after
the war when New York State encouraged settlement.
This led to a wave of new settlers, especially from New England,
who came to the area seeking new opportunities.
The influx of settlers marked the beginning of Cohoes’s
growth into a more prominent town.
During this time, the land that had once been sparsely
populated became a thriving settlement, with homes,
businesses, and infrastructure beginning to take shape.
New settlers built roads and bridges, and slowly,
industries such as farming and milling started to grow.
The strategic location of Cohoes along the Mohawk River made it
an attractive spot for industrial development later in the 19th century,
positioning the town for the boom it would experience with
the rise of the textile industry.
The foundations laid by these early settlers were critical to the growth
of Cohoes as it transitioned from a quiet farming hamlet into a bustling industrial town.
Number3: The Spindle City The Cohoes Falls
The Cohoes Falls is one of the city's most iconic landmarks.
At 70 feet high and discharging over 27,000 cubic feet of water per second,
it is the second-largest waterfall in New York State,
second only to Niagara Falls.
Number4: The Spindle City Indigenous Roots
The name Cohoes is believed to be derived from a Mohawk term
that means the place of the falling canoe,
reflecting the area's deep indigenous history
and its connection to the Mohawk Nation.
Number5: The Spindle City Mastodon Discovery
In 1866, while excavating for a mill near Cohoes Falls,
workers unearthed the bones of a mastodon.
This significant discovery led to public exhibitions,
and the skeleton was eventually moved to the New York State Museum.
Number6: The Spindle City Early Infrastructure
The first bridge across the Mohawk River was built in Cohoes in 1795.
This toll bridge played a vital role in connecting the town with larger settlements,
facilitating trade and transportation for the local economy.
Number7: The Spindle City Canals for Industry
In 1831, a dam and two canals were constructed on
the Mohawk River to regulate water flow for industrial use.
This infrastructure powered the local factories
and was crucial in transforming Cohoes into an industrial hub.
Number8: The Spindle City Cultural Heritage
Cohoes boasts a rich cultural heritage,
influenced by its early settlers and indigenous peoples.
This blend of cultures is celebrated in local festivals
and community events that honor the city’s diverse history.
Number9: The Spindle City The Van Schaick Mansion
The Van Schaick Mansion, located on Van Schaick Island,
is a well-preserved colonial-era landmark.
It offers a glimpse into the early architecture and history of the region,
and today serves as a historical site open to the public.
Number10: The Spindle City Public Library History
Cohoes has a long tradition of supporting education and literacy.
Its first public library, the Cohoes District School Library,
