TOP 5 TRAILS IN THE GATINEAU PARK // Things to do in Ottawa

In this week's episode, I'm presenting my list of top 5 trails to hike in the Gatineau Park in 2020. While some trails are closed during the pandemic, these 5 trails remain accessible to the public. Hiking in the Gatineau Park is an awesome free activity (might have to pay for parking) to do in the National Capital Region of Canada during the summer.

Travel episode 15 - Filmed on Saturday, 1st of August 2020

All the information needed for these 5 hikes is available on the National Capital's Commission's website:

To have access to the Pink Lake trail, you must park on Notch road where this road intersects trail #15. Park in a legal parking spot and head in the direction of the Pink lake by taking trail 15, then 35. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to get to Pink Lake.
I also recommend you check out the app All Trails (not sponsered) which offers valuable information on all these trails.

Rockland, ON

Rockland is a bilingual community located about 40 km (25 mi) east of downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, part of the city of Clarence-Rockland. Rockland has a population of 26,505 (2021).[1] It is home to a large part of the francophone community in Eastern Ontario along with the towns situated to the east and the Ottawa suburb of Orleans to the west.

History
The Clarence region began growing in 1840 with the development of the road to l'Orignal-Bytown. Before then, farmers relentlessly cleared wooded space to be able to cultivate land, their only means of survival. In 1868, a young entrepreneur, William Cameron Edwards, decided to establish a sawmill at the McCaul point. The opening of a link to the Grand Trunk Railway followed in 1888 to allow wood and merchandise to be transported. Edwards, who held timber rights in the area and was also the first postmaster, named the area for the rocky nature of its landscape. The post office dates from 1869.[2]

In 1889, the mission served by the priest Caron from Clarence-Creek became a parish. The first priest of the new parish was Siméon Hudon, native of Québec City. The first school opened in 1875 while the first high-school opened in 1905.

Construction of a second railroad in 1908 linking Ottawa and Hawkesbury greatly promoted population. In effect, for 75 cents (return) people could go to Ottawa to run errands and return in the same day. The woodmill owned by W. C. Edwards closed in 1926, as a result of the economic turmoil following the First World War. A large part of the population moved to the province of Quebec to find employment in the woodmills in Hull and Gatineau. Economic recovery began in 1939 with the start of the Second World War, and the return of soldiers after the war brought an increase in population. Construction of homes increased rapidly creating a need for expanded water services, electricity and a sewer system implemented in 1964.

Best Parks Near Downtown Ottawa Canada: Strathcona Park, Beautiful Fountain & Ruins, Sculpture

Welcome to my Channel -- Walking Attractions

Last weekend, I took a trip to Strathcona Park in Ottawa and I must say, it was a memorable experience. The park, which lies on the west bank of the Rideau River, is a beautiful haven for nature lovers and history buffs. From the beautiful fountain to the balanced rock sculptures exhibit and the ruins, Strathcona Park has something for everyone.

As soon as I entered the park, I was struck by the beautiful water fountain standing atop a hill. It was donated by Lord Strathcona in 1909 and sculpted by Mathurin Moreau, a renowned French sculptor. The fountain is a beautifully composed landmark, typical of the decorative 19th-century monuments designed in the beaux Arts tradition. The central ornamental spout with four fish rises above the upper basin, sending streams of water that finally spill into a larger cast stone basin below the cherubs. The cherubs stand on a festooned base ornamented with sea shells and Lord Strathcona's Coat of Arms. It's no wonder why this fountain is a popular attraction for both tourists and locals.

As I continued walking around the park, I came across the ruins of an ancient Greek temple. At first glance, it looked like an original piece, but I learned that Stephen Brathwaite created it using a variety of building pieces, all taken from historical buildings in Ottawa. Chunks of the Parliament Building, the Chateau Laurier, and the Royal Canadian Mint are all part of his intricate arrangement.

As I walked past the stone pieces, I noticed bronze statuettes in small niches all around the sculpture. The piece, titled Strathcona's Folly, is intended to encourage us to consider the cycle of life. It's constructed using real pieces of local architectural history like adult-size toy building blocks. There are pieces of the Institut Jeanne D'arc, a Convent on Sussex Dr., stone faces from a branch of the Bank of Montreal, balustrades from the Chateau Laurier Hotel, bits of the Royal Canadian Mint, the Capitol Theatre, the Windsor-Duvernay Hotel, the Parliament Buildings, bronze rosettes from the Daly Building, and even one of the old swing seats from the park.

The park is also surrounded by embassies, and the most visible of these is the Russian Embassy, formerly belonging to the Soviet Union. The existing area of the park was used as a rifle range in pre-WWI Ottawa before being redeveloped into a park and the site of Ottawa’s first golf course. Lots of ducks and geese can be found in the park, and it's a fantastic place to spend some fun time with family and friends. It's great for runners, walkers, cyclists, and photographers alike.

Overall, my trip to Strathcona Park was a great experience. I highly recommend visiting this park to anyone who loves nature, history, and beautiful landmarks. The park is well-maintained, and there's plenty to see and do. Whether you're looking to take a stroll or simply relax and enjoy the scenery, Strathcona Park is the perfect place to do it.

PARC OMEGA VISIT! Amazing drive-through safari and walking park in Quebec, 1h from Ottawa.

PARC OMEGA VISIT! Amazing drive-through Safari and walking park in Quebec, 1h from Ottawa.
Absolute LOVED visiting this Safari park! 12 km of drive-through experience where you can feed the various animals such as deer, elk, wild pigs and see few other animals such as buffalo and bears (gated). Plus there are a few areas where you can park and feed animals from hand and hike. Make sure to allocate whole day to this park and try to get there in the morning as animals are hungrier and more interested in being fed.

When reading online reviews they mentioned to bring 10 bags of carrots, we only needed 5! Do not bring too much. Also you can buy carrots right in the park, but it is more convenient if you buy in advance.
After about an hour of driving you will come to Sugar Shack stop, where you can park and walk around. We suggest doing so but not doing the full hike as it does NOT loop (and it was -20!!!!) and we actually lost a lot of time trying to get back. Instead pack at the next (larger) parking and from there enjoy the small village, feed the deer from hand and walk to the mini petting farm zoo.
