St. Lucia – The Caribbean’s Paradise

Saint Lucia (French: Sainte-Lucie) is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238.23 sq. mi) and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. Saint Lucia was also known as the Helen of the West Indies and its capital is Castries.

On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the United Kingdom. Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning that it has a legal system based in part on both the civil law and English common law. The Civil Code of St. Lucia of 1867 was based on the Quebec Civil Code of 1866, as supplemented by English common law-style legislation.

+ For this Info:

The volcanic island of Saint Lucia is more mountainous than most Caribbean islands, with the highest point being Mount Gimie, at 950 metres (3,120 feet) above sea level. Two other mountains, the Pitons, form the island's most famous landmark. They are located between Soufrière and Choiseul on the western side of the island. Saint Lucia is also one of the few islands in the world that boasts a drive-in volcano.

Tourist attractions include a drive-in volcano, Sulphur Springs (in Soufrière), the Botanical Gardens, the Majestic twin Peaks The Pitons, a world heritage site, the rain forests, and Pigeon Island National Park, which is home to Fort Rodney, an old British military base. The majority of tourists visit Saint Lucia as part of a cruise. Most of their time tends to be spent in Castries, although Soufriere, Marigot Bay and Gros Islet are popular locations to visit.

Saint Lucia Drive, Walk and Flight Around Volcanic Pitons

Brief summary of all day VIP excursion from Celebrity Cruise to the fascinating Volcanic Pitons in Caribbean island nation Saint Lucia. The journey includes driving through rain forests around town Soufriere, lunch visit to the Lanera resort and catamaran ride back to the cruise ship.

According to the Wikipedia

Saint Lucia (UK: /sənt luːˈsiːə, -ˈluːʃə/ (listen), US: /seɪnt ˈluːʃə/ (listen); French: Sainte-Lucie) is an island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.[8] The island was previously called Iyonola, the name given to the island by the native Arawaks, and later Hewanorra, the name given by the native Caribs, two separate Amerindian peoples. Part of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238 square miles) and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. St. Lucia's largest city is Castries, its current capital, and its second largest is Soufrière, the first French colonial capital on the island.

The French were the first Europeans to settle on the island. They signed a treaty with the native Island Caribs in 1660. England took control of the island from 1663 to 1667. In ensuing years, it was at war with France fourteen times, and the rule of the island changed frequently. In 1814, the British took definitive control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the Helen of the West after the Greek mythological character, Helen of Troy.

Representative government came about in 1840. From 1958 to 1962, the island was a member of the West Indies Federation. On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations as a Commonwealth realm. Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning that it has a legal system based in part on both the civil law and English common law.

Forests cover about 77% of the land area.

Saint Lucia contains five terrestrial ecoregions: Windward Islands moist forests, Leeward Islands dry forests, Windward Islands dry forests, Windward Islands xeric scrub, and Lesser Antilles mangroves. It had a 2019 Forest Landscape Integrity Index mean score of 6.17/10, ranking it 84th globally out of 172 countries.

A species of lizard, Anolis luciae, is named for and is endemic to Saint Lucia.

Saint Lucia geologic map indicates presence of Miocene/Oligocene volcanic rocks, Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, Quaternary volcanic edifices, flows, and pyroclastic deposits

The geology of St. Lucia can be described as composing three main areas. The oldest, 16–18 Ma, volcanic rocks are exposed from Castries northward and consist of eroded basalt and andesite centres. The middle, central highlands, portion of the island consists of dissected andesite centres, 10.4 to 1 Mya, while the lower southwest portion of the island contains recent activity from the Soufriere Volcanic Centre (SVC). This SVC, contains pyroclastic flow deposits, lava flows, domes, block and ash flow deposits, and explosion craters. This depression's perimeter includes the town of Soufriere, Mount Tabac, Mt. Gimie, Morne Bonin, and Gros Piton. At 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) in diameter, though the western portion is open towards the Grenada basin, the depression formed as recently as 100 kya. The depression is noted for its geothermal activity, especially at Sulphur Springs and Soufrière Estates, a phreatic eruption in 1776, and recent seismic activity (2000–2001).

The capital city of Saint Lucia is Castries (population 60,263) where 32.4% of the population lives. Other major towns include Gros Islet, Soufrière, and Vieux Fort. The population tends to be concentrated around the coast, with the interior more sparsely populated, due to the presence of dense forests.

The local climate is tropical, specifically a tropical rainforest climate (Af) under the Köppen climate classification, moderated by northeast trade winds, with a dry season from 1 December to 31 May, and a wet season from 1 June to 30 November (referred to by locals as the hurricane season).

Average daytime temperatures are around 30 °C (86.0 °F), and average nighttime temperatures are around 24 °C (75.2 °F). Since it is fairly close to the equator, the temperature does not fluctuate much between winter and summer. Average annual rainfall ranges from 1,300 mm (51.2 in) on the coast to 3,810 mm (150 in) in the rainforests.

Saint Lucia | Tet Paul Nature Trail St. Lucia

The Tet Paul Nature Trail hike is one of the best ways to get absolutely gorgeous views of the area including the Pitons. It is located 10 minutes from Soufriere, the trail can take about 45 minutes to complete. It is more or less an easy to moderate hike in terms of difficulty and is great for families and groups.

The different viewing platforms along the trail allow you not only the Pitons but Jalousie Bay, on a clear day sometimes Mount Gimie, Fond Gens Libre, Choiseul, Maria Island, Vieux Fort and even to the far away islands of Martinique and St. Vincent.

On the trail you will learn a lot about native species and their nutritional/ medicinal values. Trees found in this area include guava, avocado, and soursop trees. Other interesting stops on the trail include the Cassava House, Traditional House giving visitors the chance to learn how people used to live in St Lucia.

You pay for your entrance at the office and get a local guide who can answer your questions and provide insights about the attractions you will see along the way. My guide Meshach was pleasant and knowledge so come along let’s check it out

St Lucia Festivals and Events

Sugar Beach - St Lucia

Sugar Beach (Anse des Pitons) was my favourite beach in the whole of Saint Lucia, located just a couple of kilometres from Soufriere. Sugar Beach sits between the two pitons delivering spectacular views in every direction. It is dominated by the Viceroy Resort but also one of the top places on the island for snorkelling. What’s more, you don’t have to spend a fortune to stay here to enjoy this stunning beach. Watch for my top tips on how to get to & from the beach.

The Marine Preserve is at the far-right hand side, just past the small boat dock. Join me as I explore the underwater world here too. However, also be aware of jellyfish. The only stings I got were both from Sugar Beach.
