Channahon Il. State Park 2020

It was a beautiful day so we figured we would check out a state park we've never been to that's near us. It turned into a great day for a picnic, some playing and a bike ride.

Hiking the Illinois & Michigan Canal trail with Drone Shots Channahon, IL

Hiking the Illinois & Michigan Canal trail starting in Channahon, Illinois for seven mile put and back. Small part of the sixty-one mile trail. The name Channahon is a Native American word for the meeting of the waters. Four rivers including the DuPage, DesPlaines, Kankakee, and Illinois River flow through this area, plus the I&M Canal. The day was March 3 after a brutal February of snow and cold. The trail was not ideal for walking due to the mud, left over ice and snow, and areas of standing water. If you don’t mind getting your feet wet it was ok. I went on a Wednesday and was alone on the trail.

I launched my DJI Mavic Mini drone along the canal and DesPlaine river. I used my DJI OM4 Gimbal with my iPhone 11 for photos and videos.

Witnessed a large barge and two swans. Many ducks along the waterway. Visited McKinley Woods Loop. Trail took me by the canal lock, spill way dam, and over bridges. Also, took a detour off the trail for a walk in the woods designated for snow mobiles.

The fun of outdoor adventure in Illinois at Starved Rock State Park

Starved Rock State Park is located near Utica in Illinois. It hosts more visitors than 10 of the 59 National Parks in the United States. And there is a good reason why!. Whether you enjoy hiking along the nature trails or viewing the many spectacular overlooks along the Illinois River, recreational opportunities abound. From picnicking to fishing to boating, from horseback riding to camping to enjoying winter sports, there’s so much to do that you’ll come back again and again. The backdrop for your activities are 18 canyons formed by glacial melt water and stream erosion. They slice dramatically through tree-covered, sandstone bluffs for four miles at Starved Rock State Park, which is located along the south side of the Illinois River, one mile south of Utica and midway between the cities of LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa.

The park is best known for its fascinating rock formations, primarily St. Peter sandstone, laid down in a huge shallow inland sea more than 425 million years ago and later brought to the surface. While the areas along the river and its tributaries still are predominantly forested, much of the area is a flat, gently rolling plain. The upland prairies were created during an intensive warming period several thousand years after the melting of the glaciers. The Illinois River Valley in the Starved Rock area is a major contrast to the flatland. The valley was formed by a series of floods as glacial melt water broke through moraines, sending torrents of water surging across the land and deeply eroding the sandstone and other sedimentary rocks.

During early spring, when the end of winter thaw is occurring and rains are frequent, sparkling waterfalls are found at the heads of all 18 canyons, and vertical walls of moss-covered stone create a setting of natural geologic beauty uncommon in Illinois. Some of the longer-lasting waterfalls are found in French, LaSalle and St. Louis canyons. Waterfalls, rivers and streams can undercut a cliff, creating overhangs in the sandstone, like Council Overhang at the east end of the park. Other sights can be seen from the bluffs themselves, which provide vantage points for enjoying spectacular vistas. The porous sandstone bluffs allow water to soak quickly through, only to collect in greater quantities on the slopes below. The resulting lush vegetation supports an abundant wildlife and bird population, including woodchucks, moles, vireos and catbirds. Wood ducks that nest in hollow trees occasionally can be seen paddling along the river’s edge. Evidence of beavers and muskrats can be seen as you walk along the River Trail.

Black oak, red cedar and white oak, as well as white pine and white cedar, grow on the drier, sandy bluff tops. Yellow bellied sapsuckers drill parallel rows of small holes on cedar trees and return to feed on sap and small insects. Service berry and northern honeysuckle–shrubs that prefer a well-drained area–attract scarlet tangers and cedar waxwings.

Art S.'s Review on The Dyrt:

▶︎ Walk-in camping within sight of homes but along a great bike path
I'm betting that this was a beautiful place in its day. When we visited, it was an ok place to walk around but it could just be that it didn't start popping this early in the spring.
You definitely need to walk a bit from the parking lot. The sign says to follow the path but at the end of it (by the vault toilets) you need to go left. It's all a rolling, grassy area but it's divided up like formal gardens. There is even a bridge over a depressed grassy area - we are guessing that it could be a nice pond at times. If you walk around before getting to the tenting area, there are some nice offshoot areas with plenty of raised grills. The ground was bumpy and things look a bit tired but it is a nice respite.
The tent camping area is in a small peninsula that is surrounded by homes. You can see the backyards and houses. A small creek separates things and there are some small trees and vegetation providing a bit of privacy. In this early spring time I felt a bit on display in this area. The water was closed up - maybe due to covid? The vault toilets are in the middle of the other park area, just before the start of the tenting spots. There are no individual sites. It's all just open field (and a bit bumpy).
The best part of this is that it is right in town and it's also right on the I & M Canal bike path. The bike path is a great way to get from Chicago to Starved Rock while avoiding the roads. I can see that this would be a great night's stop on a cross state adventure.

I attempted to skate the whole Nickel Plate Trail, all 44 miles from Rochester to Kokomo, but we started too late. 6 times tripping over rocks, one hard fall in the dark, and 30 miles later and we couldn't continue, but here's the first attempt to skate the whole Nickel Plate Trail.
