About 100 years after Vasco da Gama landed in the west cost of India the European traders started making inroads into Bengal. Bandel became a stronghold of the Portuguese while the Danes and the Dutch had their supremacy in Srerampur and Chuchura respectively.
Chandannagor was the French colony. Unlike the other European colonies of Bengal the French control of Chandannagar continued even after independence and it was only in 1950 Chandannagar became a part of India.
Once a beautiful town with French masons and boulevards, Chandannagar has lost most of its past glory. Today it represents a crowded unplanned town on the Howrah – Burdwan main line. A few of the French buildings have passed the test of time and can still be seen today reminding one of the French days of Chandannagar, offering a French holiday with a distinctive Bengali twist.

Chandannagar (also known by its former name Chandernagore and French name Chandernagor) is a city in the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is headquarter of the Chandannagore subdivision and is part of the area covered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
Located on the western bank of Hooghly River, the town was one of the five settlements of French India. The city has a unique culture due to the mixed Bengali culture and French culture, different from other cities in West Bengal. Indo-French architecture is seen in the colonial bungalows, most of which are in a dilapidated state.

Chandannagar, also called Chandernagore, city, southeastern West Bengal state, northeastern India, just west of the Hugli (Hooghly) River and part of the Kolkata (Calcutta) urban agglomeration. It is connected by road and rail with Kolkata and Burdwan. Settled in 1673 by the French and expanded commercially, it was captured by the British in 1757 and again in 1794 but was restored to France in 1815 and remained so until 1950, when the French government officially ceded the city to the control of the Indian government. The town still retains some of its Francophone cultures.

Merger with India -
India became independent from Britain in 1947. In June 1948 the French Government held a plebiscite which found that 97% of Chandannagar's residents wished to become part of India. In May 1950, the French allowed the Indian government to assume de facto control over Chandannagar, officially ceding the city to India on 2 February 1951. De jure transfer took place on 9 June 1952. The inhabitants were given the option to retain French nationality, like their counterparts in Pondicherry.
On 2 October 1954 Chandannagar was integrated into the state of West Bengal.

Chandannagar (also known by its former name Chandernagore and French name Chandernagor) is a city in the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is headquarter of the Chandannagore subdivision and is part of the area covered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.
Located on the western bank of Hooghly River, the town was a former French colony of India. The city has a unique culture due to the mixed Bengali culture and French culture, different from other cities in West Bengal. Indo-French architecture is seen in the colonial bungalows, most of which are in a dilapidated state.
