12k of HELL hiking through the Cares Gorge? Our trip to Northern Spain ends at the Ruta del Cares.

This hike through the Picos de Europa Nationl Park was fantastic. Known as the Ruta del Cares it starts at Cain in Leon and ends in Poncebos in Asturias. The hike follows the River Cares which cuts its way through the Cares Gorge.

Our story

We are Irvine and Karen and we love to travel. We have had the travel bug since we met 44 years ago and have travelled extensively ever since.

We travelled around the world in 2017 taking in Dubai, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, California and Florida. We have many great memories of that trip.

The section in New Zealand was a tour of the South Island by camper van and it was an incredible trip. We started in the North of the South Island by touring the vineyards of the Marlborough region and tasting our favourite wine which is the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. We then travelled down the East Coast to Kaikoura where we did a Whale Watching tour before stopping off in Christchurch. Our journey then took us to the beautiful Queenstown and further West to the Fjord Land of Milford Sound which has got to be one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen. Once we reached Franz Joseph it was a helicopter ride to the the Franz Joseph Glacier which had us in awe and the spectacular drive through Arthur’s Pass completed what was an unforgettable trip around this beautiful country. The video series of our trip can be found on this YouTube channel.

We love to travel TOGETHER, as in our opinion it’s better to have SHARED memories than saying to each other “I wish you had seen this or that? or “If only you had been there” etc so our advice is always travel and do things TOGETHER and you will have so many SHARED memories.

After many holidays to the sunshine State we bought a villa in Florida in 2007 and had many more shared holidays with family and friends. We were very lucky to retire at 55 (me) and 52 (Karen) in 2015 and then started to spend 6 months per year living in our Florida home. We did this for 8 years before deciding that, after owning for 15 years, it was time to sell in 2023.

Our love of motorhoming started at a very young age (I was 20 and Karen 17) when we borrowed a small camper van from a friend and toured around the Highlands of Scotland, however it wasn’t until we retired in 2015 that we decided to buy our first motorhome a second hand Chausson Flash 10 which really gave us the bug. 3 years later we bought a brand new Mobilvetta K Yacht 85 and our love for motorhoming just grew deeper. After selling our house in Florida we decided it was time to buy our dream motorhome so went to the NEC and ordered a Carthago Chic C Line XL LE which is now known as Nessie due to being a monster and residing in Scotland. This van gives us everything we need in a motorhome, it’s very spacious, luxurious and has a massive amount of storage space which will be great for the European trips we have planned for the future.

Our first trip in Nessie was a tour around France which was incredible and the videos of that trip can be viewed on this YouTube channel also. The trip took us by ferry from Poole to Cherbourg where we visited the World War 2 museum and memorial at Utah Beach which was fabulous. We then travelled South through the Vendeé to Challans, La Rochelle and the île de Ré. Our next port of call was the beautiful Dordogne where we visited Monpazier, Chateau Naud, Chateau Beynac and the Lascaux Caves before we headed East to the Alps and the pretty towns of Annecy on Lake Annecy and Chamonix where we took the gondola to Aquille du Midi. After leaving Chamonix we headed North through Dijon to the Champagne region where we visited the Joseph Perrier Champagne house and Caves and sampled some of the beautiful champagne. This was a fantastic first trip in Nessie and we look forward to sharing future trips with you through this channel and hope you enjoy coming along with us.

An epic motorhome trip to France. In this section we travel to Cherbourg and Utah Beach in Normandy

The World War 2 Museum and Memorial at Utah Beach was such a special place to visit. Come along with us as we share our experience. We take the Brittany Ferry from Poole to Cherbourg in France then head along the coast to Utah Beach. We pitch up at Camping Paradis which is a 10 minute walk from the museum which we found to be absolutely excellent and great value for money. Our next stop was at Challans where we cook a Brazilian Fish Stew in the van. Got to just love Van Cooking. @helenandmartinsTreks

The North of Spain by motorhome. In this episode we visit Potes and stay at Camping La Viorna. #nec

In this series of videos we travel to the North of Spain in our Carthago Chic C Line EX LE. We visit San Sebastián, Cudillero, León, Riaño and Potes. We stay in a combination of Aires, Camping Car Parks & Campsites. Our trip takes us to the food capital of Spain (in our opinion), to the lost villages of Riaño and we get to tick off a bucket list item by hiking the Ruta del Cares which meanders through the stunning Cares Gorge.

World’s Most Amazing Restaurants With a View
by Marnie Hunter March 24, 2014

Warm beige tones, rich graphic accents, and futuristic chairs give Le Jules Verne a contemporary elegance, while dishes from superstar chef Alain Ducasse create a joie de vivre in diners’ mouths. But the real showstopper at this restaurant—set more than 400 feet above Paris in the Eiffel Tower—is its panoramic view. From the tower’s south pillar, diners look out on barges navigating the Seine and clusters of steely gray rooftops stretching for miles.

Restaurants have long been setting tables in locales with dramatic views, but often the food has paled in comparison. With the dramatic evolution of the global culinary scene, however, it’s more than safe to look past the cocktail menu at many of the world’s most beautifully situated restaurants. “They actually have a view and good food at the same time,” says Tim Zagat, co-founder of the Zagat Survey restaurant guides. “It’s a combination that was rare 10 or 20 years ago.”

So where are the top places that harmonize amazing vistas with delectable victuals?

At Asiate, in New York’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, eyefuls of Midtown Manhattan’s cloud-grazing buildings and the lush refuge of Central Park draw locals, tourists, and special occasion diners, and executive chef Toni Robertson is up to the task of keeping the Asian-influenced cuisine at the same high level as the 35th-floor restaurant. “The challenge I have is I have to compete with the view, but as a chef, I always win,” she says.

The Big Apple is hardly alone in providing winning skyscraper meals. At Felix, on the 28th floor of Hong Kong’s Peninsula Hotel, guests soak in the city’s striking setting from a slick dining room designed by Philippe Starck while feasting on dishes like Tasmanian salmon with crushed eggplant-tomato horseradish cream and roasted challans duck breast with black sesame hummus.

Of course, some of the world’s most spectacular restaurant views are born, not made. At Ambrosia, on the Greek island of Santorini, the island’s sea-filled volcanic crater provides a rocky perch for the terraced restaurant, from which diners gaze out on an otherworldly blue sea. Santorini fava puree with grilled octopus and caramelized onions brings Grecian flavors to the Aegean seascape.

And up in British Columbia, diners at Eagle’s Eye Restaurant—part of Kicking Horse Resort—survey snow-capped peaks as they tuck into Rocky Mountain cuisine infused with hints of chef Alain Soret’s native France. Riding a gondola up to the restaurant 7,700 feet above sea level gives some guests the impression they’re going to an alpine snack shack.

“Lots of people expect to find burgers and doughnuts up there,” says Soret. They’re surprised to be greeted with romantic fireside dining and entrees like roasted venison with almonds, pancetta, and juniper jus served with fig-saffron risotto.

Whether you crave rough-edged mountains or deep ocean views, a glitzy skyscraper scene or a secluded retreat, these restaurants offer mesmerizing views with menus worthy of the scenery.

An epic motorhome trip to France. In this section we travel to La Rochelle and Ile de Ré #motorhome

The beautiful La Rochelle and The Ile de Ré delight us on this section of our trip around France. We stay at a fantastic Aire which is walking distance from the centre of La Rochelle, tour the 3 stunning towers, stroll round the old market hall and sample some local beer & wine. On Ile de Ré we spend the day in the pretty little fishing town of La Flotte and walk its stunning coastal path.

Our motto: Live today like there could be no tomorrow - You only get one crack at this life so make sure to enjoy it.

Cheers

Irvine & Karen

AIX LES BAINS 4K Driving downtown AURA region, Savoie

📹 In this 4K video you will drive downtown AIX LES BAINS.

This town is a Spa ressort located on the scores of Lake Bourget, in Savoie. Swimming, shilling and golf are often practiced there. The city has several emblematic monuments such as the Roman remains of the temple of Diana, adjoining the town hall, and the Château de la Roche du Roi, in the Belle Epoque style.

🇫🇷 The history of Aix-les-Bains is directly related to the Lac du Bourget and especially to its hot springs which made it a spa among the most renowned in the world. The historical analysis of the town must be closer to the history of the Savoy, if we are to better understand its evolution and its cultural influences.

Situated on the shore of the largest natural lake of glacial origin in France, the Lac du Bourget, this resort is a major spa town; it has the largest freshwater marina in France.[3] It is the second largest city in Savoy in terms of population, with a population of 29,993 as of 2018. It is part of the Chambéry urban area.
A leading town of the Belle Époque, of international renown, Aix-les-Bains was a vacation destination for nobility and the wealthy. Although the thermal baths are no longer the main attraction in Aix, the area continues to be draw visitors for water sports and activities. The town has partially compensated for the loss of visitors coming for spa treatments by developing tourism. It hosts up to 200,000 general visitors annually, between tourists and people seeking mineral bath therapy.[4] It is also an industrial city, with a few large companies such as Alstom, the headquarters of the Léon Grosse companies, ABB Cellier, Aixam, as well as a high-quality leather goods factory.
In addition to thermal baths and tourism, Aix-les-Bains is known for its national Musilac festival. It has four flowers and two golden flowers at the Concours des villes et villages fleuris, as well as the City of Art and History label.
