El Salvador Travel Guide - An Amazing Adventure
El Salvador Travel Guide - An Amazing Adventure
El Salvador is a country in Central America and, geographically, is part of continental North America. It is bordered on the southwest by the Pacific Ocean, and lies between Guatemala and Honduras. It is divided into 14 sections called Departments. It has 25 volcanoes, 14 lakes, and three large cities and is divided in to East, Central and West with the the capital San Salvador in the central region, Santa Ana in the west and San Miguel the largest city in the east.
The civilization of El Salvador dates from the pre-Columbian time, around 1500 BC, according to evidence provided by the ancient structures of Tazumal in Chalchuapa. El Salvador has a tropical climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons. Temperatures vary primarily with elevation and show little seasonal change. The Pacific lowlands are uniformly hot; the central plateau and mountain areas are more moderate.

The countryside of El Salvador is breathtaking, with volcanoes and mountains offering green adventurers exactly what they are looking for. Many of environmentally-oriented community-based organizations promote eco-tourism, and there are a number of beautiful and secluded beaches and forests scattered throughout the country.
A well-maintained and sparsely populated national park is found in the west at Bosque El Imposible. Additionally, there is Montecristo Cloud Forest, and a quaint fishing village with incredible local hospitality and remote coconut islands in La Isla de Méndez. Isla de Olomega in the department of San Miguel is an excellent eco-tourism destination, as are the beautiful Isla El Cajete in Sonsonate, Isla San Sebastian, Conchagua, Conchaguita, Isla Conejo, Isla Teopan, and Isla Meanguera.
One should also visit the colonial towns of Ataco, Apaneca, Juayua, Panchimalco, and Suchitoto as well as the Mayan sites of San Andrés, Joya de Cerén (The Pompeii of Central America and an UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Tazumal, whose main pyramid rises some 75 feet into the air. The on-site museum showcases artifacts from the Pipil culture (the builders of Tazumal), as well as paintings that illustrate life in pre-Hispanic El Salvador. Souvenir hunters will find some of the best artisans in San Juan el Espino and in La Palma (the artisan capital of El Salvador).
The capital, San Salvador, is a cosmopolitan city with good restaurants highlighting the country’s fresh seafood, as well as plenty of shopping, entertainment and nightlife. San Miguel in the East offers tourists a more authentic way to see El Salvador by getting off the beaten track to see its countryside, coastline and lakes

Welcome to our video on the top things to do in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Known for its rich history, colonial architecture, and proximity to natural wonders, Santa Ana is one of the country’s most vibrant cities. Here are some of the best places to visit and activities to enjoy in Santa Ana.
Start with a visit to the Santa Ana Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana), a stunning Gothic-style church that is one of El Salvador’s architectural treasures. Built in the early 20th century, the cathedral features beautiful stained-glass windows, towering spires, and intricate carvings. It’s located in the central plaza, making it a great starting point for exploring the city.
Next, head over to the Teatro de Santa Ana, an impressive neoclassical theater located near the cathedral. Built in the early 1900s, the theater is a cultural icon and hosts various performances, including plays, concerts, and cultural events. You can take a guided tour of the interior, which features elegant décor and historical significance.
For a deeper dive into local history, visit the Museum of Western Art (Museo Regional de Occidente), which showcases the history and culture of the region. The museum houses a collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, colonial-era relics, and exhibits on Santa Ana’s important role in the coffee trade.
Outdoor enthusiasts should take a day trip to Cerro Verde National Park, located just outside the city. The park offers scenic hiking trails and stunning views of three nearby volcanoes: Izalco, Cerro Verde, and Santa Ana Volcano. For the adventurous, hiking to the summit of Santa Ana Volcano is a must-do.
Another natural wonder worth visiting is Lake Coatepeque, a beautiful crater lake located about 20 minutes from Santa Ana. You can enjoy water activities like kayaking and swimming, or simply relax at one of the lakeside restaurants while taking in the views of the shimmering blue water.
Finally, explore Casa Blanca and Tazumal, two important archaeological sites located near Santa Ana. These ancient Mayan ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into El Salvador’s pre-Columbian past. Tazumal features the largest pyramid in the country, and both sites are great for history buffs and those interested in ancient civilizations.

El Tazumal Ruins | El Salvador Travel Vlog | Indian Couple in Latin America
El Tazumal is one of the most prominent Mayan ruins sites in El Slavador. The site is located in Chalchuapa, around 15 km from Santa Ana town.
Parque Arqueológico Tazumal was excavated in 1940 by archaeologist Stanley Boggs. The primary structure is pyramid B1-1 along with the Temple of Columns, located at the center of the site. Apart from the pyramid B1-1, there are 2 ball game courts and another pyramid B1-2.
We traveled to El Tazumal from Santa Ana in a bus. It was an easy trip and we did a self-guided tour of the site for around 40-45 minutes.

The Tazumal Ruins El Salvador
Though small in comparison to other Central America Mayan sites, the Tazumal ruins are the best-preserved in El Salvador. Artifacts excavated at Tazumal provide evidence of trade between Tazumal and Mayan cities as far as Mexico and Panama. Spookily, Tazumal means the place where the victims were burned, in the Mayan language of Quiché..
