Oak Alley Plantation Tour (HD)

Take a tour of Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana! The site is a National Historic Landmark and deservedly so. The grounds have these amazingly huge pecan trees that welcome you to the main mansion on the property.

Booking link for 2023 (includes Alligator Swamp Boat Tour):

It is very rich in history and our tour guide gave a nice overview of it came to be, built by the original owners Jacques Roman and his wife Celina Roman nearly 200 years ago. We got to see the rooms inside the mansion, as well as the shacks outside where the slaves lives. We didn't see any ghosts, but some of the portrait photos in the house were a bit eerie- apparently there talk that Oak Alley Plantation may be haunted.

The tour guides there were dressed in lovely period costumes, and you can even order drinks such as Mint Julep, Bourbon Twist and Creole Lemonade.

This was a very interesting part of from our tour of Louisiana in August, and we definitely recommend checking it out if you are visiting New Orleans, which is about an hour drive away to the west.

SAN FRANCISCO PLANTATION, GARYVILLE, LOUISIANA

San Francisco Plantation, Garyville, Louisiana
In 1974, the last plantation's owner moved out of the home and it was purchased by the ECOL Company - and later by Marathon Oil. By the way, a Marathon Oil plant is immediately adjacent to the plantation. San Francisco Plantation is 40 miles west of New Orleans, on the Great Mississippi River Road - in the town of Garyville, Louisiana.
The visionary San Francisco Plantation Foundation was created and the home underwent a massive restoration in the mid-1970s. San Francisco Plantation remains a river road attraction - visited annually by over 100,000 people. Although the house is antebellum in a chronological sense, it is certainly not typical of the period. The unique style and unusual coloration are distinctive.
Sadly, Marathon is closing the plantation in September 2021 - likely forever.
Here's your chance to see and enjoy this river road landmark.

World's Coolest Bonfires and Fireworks Christmas Eve on the Levee in Gramercy, Louisiana

There's no event in the world Christmas Eve quite like the bonfires and fireworks on the Mississippi River levee in Gramercy, Lutcher and Paulina, Louisiana. Locals build two story pyramids of wood and logs, pump in a healthy stream of diesel, and, not long after sunset, set the bonfires ablaze, many backed by a spectacular, vivid and cacophonous series of head-level and above fireworks. The bonfires were first used by Catholic priests to guide parishioners to midnight Mass. It soon morphed into a means of signaling Papa Noel (Santa to non-French speakers) to visit homes along the river. All in all, this is a wonderful night with warm and welcoming locals and guests from around the globe. The bonfires stretch for miles along the levee. If you look, you'll see the rising just-past-full moon next to the bonfires at 11:20 in the video, which adds to the stunning visuals. Thank you to the folks who manage the bonfires and fireworks, and the towns, residents and police who manage this fantastic event! Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
