Centerport Beach is a 230-foot beach on Northport Bay provides everything you’d find at your typical beach including a picnic and pavilion area, playground, and outdoor showers. Fishing is permitted as is cartop boat launching (e.g. canoes, kayaks, small rowboats, and sailboats). Small boat racks are available on site.

William K. Vanderbilt II, one of the richest men in the world, traveled the globe in the 1920s and ‘30s, collecting marine, invertebrate and bird specimens, and cultural artifacts for the museum he built on his Long Island estate in Centerport NY in 1944, he left his mansion, estate and museum to Suffolk County, New York, “for the use, education and enjoyment” of the public. The county opened the museum in 1950.

Just a short ride from New York City on Long Island’s north shore lies a place of uninhibited wealth and opulence immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, The Great Gatsby. Many of the mansions on the “Gold Coast,” so-called due to the huge concentration of fortunes here, are known to have inspired the setting in The Great Gatsby, and are open for the public’s perusal and enjoyment.
These mansions are now transformed into arboretums, museums, hotels and more and the general public can visit and explore.
