The ULTIMATE SICILY ROAD TRIP - Taormina, Ortigia, Agrigento, Erice & MORE (Italy’s Hidden Gems)

Welcome to Sicily, Italy's southern island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean. While Italy attracts millions of tourists each year, many tend to focus on its more iconic cities and regions. Sicily is by no means a hidden gem, but it certainly provides a more authentic and less crowded Italian experience. With its alluring mix of ancient ruins, charming coastal towns, and delicious cuisine, this is the Italy we've been looking for. We are so lucky that Tommy’s parents are joining us on this unforgettable roadtrip as we go beyond the usual tourist hotspots and immerse ourselves in the Sicilian culture.

Our first destination was the enchanting town of Taormina. In this picturesque, cliffside town, there was so much to do. We visited Isola Bella, a stunning island just off the coast, indulged in incredible dishes like the iconic Bam Bar granitas and pistachio pasta, and delved into the rich history at the ancient amphitheater.

We then headed to Ortigia, a charming island brimming with character and history. Strolling through the streets, we discovered the vibrant outdoor market, where local vendors displayed an array of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, spices, and FRESH seafood. The market's lively atmosphere was sensory overload, and we couldn't resist sampling some of the incredible seafood. The culinary scene in Ortigia, especially its exceptional seafood, makes it an unmissable highlight on any Sicily road trip.

Agrigento's Valley of the Temples stands as an essential stop on a Sicily journey. This ancient archaeological site has well-preserved Greek ruins that transport visitors back in time. We went at sunset for ideal lighting and a great atmosphere.

Erice, a hilltop town in Sicily, is a must-visit destination. With its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, the town offers a charming and historic atmosphere. We tried the local cookies, which were so yummy. The town's unique blend of history and culinary delights makes it a memorable stop on any Sicilian itinerary.

We spent a couple nights in Castellammare del Golfo, a charming town on the northwest coast of Sicily.

We ended our road trip spending few days by the sea near Messina, providing a perfect place to reflect on our incredible Sicilian adventure.

Places to see in ( Castellammare del Golfo - Italy )

Places to see in ( Castellammare del Golfo - Italy )

Castellammare del Golfo is an attractive seaside town on the north-western coast of Sicily, between Palermo and Trapani (not to be confused with Castellammare di Stabia in mainland Italy, near Naples). The historic little fishing port has a very picturesque location, below steep mountain slopes, with a handsome curved harbour at the foot of a small headland topped with a castle. Castellammare is just touristy enough that visitors don't feel out of place, but it isn't overcrowded with hotels and it has an authentic Sicilian 'feel'.

Castellammare del Golfo's principal attraction is the sea. The town's little fishing and pleasure port, called the Cala Marina, curls to the west of the castle promontory, and makes a pleasant stroll, punctuated with bars and restaurants. The harbour-front route can get sadly busy with traffic - Sicilians enjoying a car-and-scooter-borne passeggiata - but when temporarily pedestrianised in the evening the street is taken over by promenading visitors and locals passing the time of day and inspecting the fish displayed in cabinets outside restaurants. There are still small working fishing boats in Castellammare, and you may see fishermen mending their nets on board, or selling the day's catch at rickety tables on the quayside, while hopeful harbour cats prowl along searching for scraps.

There's a room with displays about the tuna fishing industry, historically so important to this part of Sicily, though nearly extinct in the Castellammare area. Information boards are in Italian, but historic exhibits (such as the rough boat-hooks used to bludgeon the unlucky tuna and pull them aboard boats) and a short 1950s documentary film, shot at Scopello, are accessible to all. During the film, watch out for the Rais, the leader of the tuna fishery, the traditional working songs of the fishermen and get an idea of how complex and entire a world the tuna fishery (tonnara) was. Men lived in communal buildings during the fishing season, labouring on nets which were then built into a sequence of net 'chambers' in the sea, into which the migrating fish would be shepherded, culminating in the 'Room of Death' where the nets were raised and the fish met a brutal end. Apparently at the Castellammare tonnara, one of the first fish caught was dedicated to the Madonna del Soccorso, placed on a floral float and paraded to church (later it was sold in the market and the proceeds donated to the church).

In the harbour Cala Marina, there are several businesses renting out boats, cars and scooters and organising excursions. Boat trips are popular but don't run daily outside summer months; you should telephone in advance or ask your hotel to do so for you. In the summer there are frequent boat excursions to San Vito Lo Capo, a seaside resort beyond the Zingaro reserve, which usually give you time to see the town, view the reserve and Scopello from the sea, and swim in a cove. It is also possible to try 'pesca turismo', fishing tourism, going out with a fisherman in his boat. The tourist information office, quayside fishermen or Ristorante La Cambusa can put you in contact with fishermen who'll organise a trip. Hiring your own boat is an adventurous way to explore the attractive coastline west of Castellammare, or visit less accessible beaches and coves.

There are sandy beaches (more below) to the east of Castellammare, and some more scenic coves in the steeper coastline towards the Zingaro nature reserve. The small beach at Guidaloca is pretty, convenient for drivers, and equipped with sunbeds and a children's pool, while the rocky coves at Scopello and within the Zingaro nature reserve appeal to swimmers and more energetic beach-lovers (be aware that in the summer, there are many of these, and bays become crowded). Scopello is a pretty village above a legendarily beautiful cove housing a former tuna fishery, the Tonnara di Scopello. It makes a good excursion, and there is a diving centre at Scopello for active holiday-makers. The coast and hill paths of the Zingaro reserve just beyond Scopello are popular with walkers, though you should note that there's little shade during the hot summer months. If you are driving in this direction, don't miss the popular belvedere above Castellammare which has good views over the town and coastline.

Places to see in ( Castellammare del Golfo - Italy ) Scopello

Places to see in ( Castellammare del Golfo - Italy ) Scopello

Scopello is an Italian place by the sea, in the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo in the province of Trapani. The village rose around a little baglio which is 10 kilometres from Castellammare del Golfo. Its inhabitants are 118, but in summer they become about 2,000. Near it there are the Riserva naturale dello Zingaro (Nature Oriented Reserve lo Zingaro) and Scopello’s stacks with the adjoining tonnara. Its name probably derives from the words stacks or rocks (scopulus in Latin and scopelos in Greek). At few kilometres from the baglio there is Guidaloca, a bay bounded by Pizzo della Gnacara and la Puntazza. Inside it you will find an arc-shaped large beach, formed by pebbles, 400 metres long. West of the “cala”(a bay) there is a cylindrical tower dating back to the 16th century, placed to guard that part of coast..

The first settlement dates back to the Ellenistic Age, then the Roman and Islamic ones. During the Norman periodi it was a Crown property. In the 13th century the emperor Frederick II of Swabia granted Scopello’s land to Oddone de Camerana, a Piedmontese, and to the Lombard kinghts who arrived in Sicily with him. In 1237 Oddone di Camerana and his Lombard kinghts moved to Corleone, and the emperor gave Scopello as a feud to the town Monte San Giuliano (now Erice). The present village dates back to the 17th century and is divided into two parts: a baglio, which is assigned to the Norman period, but dating back to the 18th century, and a small square with the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Our Lady of Graces), a parish since 1961, together with a few houses. Ferdinand II of Bourbon chose the area of Scopello, with its near wood, as the royal hunting reserve, visiting it twice, in 1830 and 1859. After the unity of Italy, it was bought at very low prices by some members of Mafia of Castellammare del Golfo who had supported the unitary cause and then sold these lands at market price.

As Scopello is a touristic seaside resort, the best period is from April to October, but in winter you can also visit it together with the numerous near attractions such as: Castellammare del Golfo, Calatafimi-Segesta, Alcamo, Riserva naturale dello Zingaro, Erice, San Vito Lo Capo.

The tonnara of Scopello is one of the most important and oldest ones in Sicily: the first buildings date back to the 13th century; the proper tonnara was built in the 15th century by Giovanni Sanclemente and enlarged by the Sanclemente family during the 16th century. Later it passed to the Society of Jesus and finally to the Florio family.

Places to see in ( Castellammare del Golfo - Italy ) Tonnara di Scopello

Places to see in ( Castellammare del Golfo - Italy ) Tonnara di Scopello

The tonnara of Scopello is one of the most important and ancient in all of Sicily ; it was built not before the XIII century and considerably enlarged by the Sanclemente family during the XV and XVI centuries . He then passed to the Society of Jesus and finally to the Florio family . It is located in the territory of Castellammare del Golfo.

An Arab geographer, Idrisi , who in the second half of the twelfth century described Sicily, makes no particular mention of Scopello and this fact leads us to believe that, at that time, it was not very populated or inhabited only seasonally for the exercise of a small tonnara. The area where once stood the malfaraggiu or marfaraggiu (undoubted word of Arabic origin), ie the product for the crew and for the deposit of the trap, which had commenced operations in the thirteenth century , belonged to the estate of Monte San Giuliano .

Some sentences issued by the bishop's court in Palermo date back to 1461 in favor of the bishop of Mazara who were denied the revenues of the tuna fishermen of Cofano, Scopello and San Nicola in Favignana by their owners, the nobles Bartolomeo de Carissima, Giovanni di Sanclemente and Filippo Crapanzano , who, summoned in Palermo together with the procurator of the bishop of the bishop, declared that the tuna of which they were owners were exempt from the payment of tithes and that this exemption had to be respected. Despite these statements were condemned to pay the past and present tithes as well as legal fees.

Giovanni Sanclemente succeeded his son Simone Sanclemente, baron of Inici, who confirmed the same succession with privilege given to Toledo on 18 July 1502 . The baron Simone Sanclemente had, among the other sons, Giuseppe Sanclemente, the firstborn, who received in possession of two thirds of the tonnara, and Giovanni Sanclemente, the third son, to whom the remaining part was assigned; Giuseppe was succeeded by his nephew Simone Sanclemente (son of Giovanni Sanclemente), who however had no descendants, so that at his death the share he owned passed to his mother Allegranza Sanclemente; Giovanni also had a daughter, Francesca, who inherited his father's tonnara but had no descendants; Allegranza became the sole owner of the tonnara (and other properties of the Sanclemente family ) and, with a testament dated 12 January 1597 , assigned two thirds to the Jesuit College and a third to the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Most Holy Rosary under the title of 'Andrea ) ofTrapani

On the rocks above the tonnara there are two towers, one of the thirteenth century of which only the ruins are part of the complex of the tonnara, and the second, of the fifteenth century , which was designed by the Florentine engineer Camillo Camilliani and does not fall in the territory pertaining to the tonnara.

The oldest documented news about the activity of the trapello of Scopello can be obtained from the Notebook of the Gabelles , dated before 1312, which suggests an organized exercise of the same tonnara already from the twelfth century . A certain continuity of the tonnara activity is also evidenced by a notarial deed dated January 15, 1421 , relating to temporary fishing bases installed in Scopello: at the time the tonnara was however to be constituted by a rather modest complex since in the Liber de Secretiis of the Barberi is referred to as tonnaria parva sive thonus maris.
