Cassis 🇫🇷 TRAVEL GUIDE | Exploring the South of France for the FIRST TIME!

This was my first trip to the south of France and after spending a day in Marseille, my friends and I headed to Cassis where you sat in the sunshine at the port, took boat trips out to the Calanques, and hiked through Parc national des Calanques or the Calanques National Park. We also visited the Cassis Market, walked the back streets of this Provencal town, and drank local wine while getting sunburn in February!

TOP 10 things to do in Marseille | South of France Travel Guide

When you visit Marseille, there are a few things you just have to see and do! Anja & Aila have put together their own favorite top 10 for you. Expect everything from essentials to some very special ideas…
Marseille, France’s second-largest city, is full of contradictions. You’ll find the most breathtaking places and rather shabby looking areas. You can stumble from the busiest spots in this big industrial city to little squares that will remind you of a provencal village in a matter of minutes. It’s a noisy, smelly, vibrant city - full of life and excitement and voices in every language imaginable…

Places to see in ( Cassis - France ) Calanques

Places to see in ( Cassis - France ) Calanques

Strictly speaking, only one of these three calanques, Port Miou, is part of the territory of Cassis. All the others fall within the municipality of Marseille. However, for practical purposes, these particular calanques can be more easily accessed from the east, rather than starting in Marseille.

In September 2016 the calanques between Marseille and Cassis were laid waste by a terrible forest fire. Started deliberately, it destroyed 3500 hectares / 8650 acres of land and had a severe impact on the delicate ecosystem of the region. It will take many years for the land to recover.

These calanques (with the partial exception of Port Miou) were officially declared a National Park in April 2012, and there may be restrictions on certain sporting activities such as hunting or fishing as a result. On the Presqu'Ile (Peninsula) to the south-west of the town, Port Miou is the nearest of these calanques, and the easiest one to reach from the centre of town

You arrive at the Peninsula along a high crest fringed on one side by pine trees overlooking the sea and on the other by olive trees overlooking Port Miou itself. At the end of the crest is a restaurant, La Presqu'Ile, which serves seafood, salads and simple grilled meat dishes and is open from May to September. Next to it is a tennis club. There is no bar or restaurant down at the bottom of the calanque. The crest offers dramatic views along Port Miou, which is winding and very long - 1.5 km / just under a mile - and offers mooring for over 500 boats along both its fringes. Like the other two calanques of Cassis, it is uninhabited; unlike them, it has no beach.

( Cassis - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Cassis. Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Cassis - France

Things to see in Cassis – Visit the Calanques

The Calanques of Cassis, a series of coves nestled between towering limestone cliffs, dot the coastline of southern France between the village of Cassis and the city of Marseille.

A great way to see the calanques, to appreciate the sheer height of the cliffs and the crystal clear emerald water, is by boat.

The Many Charms of Cassis, France | France 2021

We visited Cassis today, a Mediterranean fishing port in southern France known for pebbly beaches and Calanques, narrow inlets, and limestone cliffs. We ate lunch at La Plague Bleue for lunch, experienced the beautiful beach of Plage de la Grande Mar. We first planned to do kayaking but the beautiful beaches made us wanna dip instead!
