TORINO - Italy Travel Guide | Around The World
Turin (Italian: Torino; Piedmontese: Turin), a large city of about one million inhabitants, is the capital of Piedmont, a region of northwestern Italy, a one-hour drive from the French border and slightly more than that from the Mediterranean sea. It's famous for being the home of Sabaudian former royal family. Today, Turin, with its fine, aristocratic atmosphere, old world sophisticated shops, grand boulevards and palaces, leafy parks, and several art galleries, is an increasingly popular tourist resort. The 2006 Winter Olympics, and its status recently as World Book Capital have promoted tourists to visit this beautiful and underestimated Italian city, which has a longstanding cultural and artistic history.
Turin was the first capital of modern Italy, and was the host of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. While it's not a famous tourist destination like Florence or Rome, the setting is pleasant, with the Po River flowing through the city, the genteel hills overlooking the city and scattered with pleasant villas and surrounded by the Italian Alps off in the distance. This is why the famous architect Le Corbusier defined Turin as the city with the most beautiful natural location in the world.
Turin is an important hub of technology and industry. The FIAT automobile company is based here: The 'T' in the name stands for Torino (F I A T = Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, which translates as: Italian Automobile Factory Turin). It was also the birthplace to several cultural and political movements in Italy.
Turin inhabitants are well known across Italy for their understatement and composure and the city reflects this attitude.
Many people consider Torino the European capital of Baroque: many palaces and churches were built in this style during the kingdom of the Savoia. It isn't the typical Italian city, with red and yellow buildings: is a bit more French, so much that is also called the little Paris; wide boulevards with white buildings make the city center more similar to Paris. Around the city, a crown of churches and castles, some up on a hilltop, some lost in a park, provide plenty of interesting views. Turin also has an aristocratic atmosphere - the centre is filled with posh 19th century cafes, regal-like arcaded mansions, debonair glittering restaurants, and grand churches.
Turin is home to the famous Shroud of Turin. More recently, it has become the home of the Slow Food Movement.
Turin's international airport is located 15km north of the city center and is named after Italy's former President Sandro Pertini. It is in the town of Caselle, connected to Turin city by a convenient motorway.
Turin has three main railway stations, Porta Nuova, Porta Susa and Lingotto FS.
Turin's main attractions include important baroque palaces and churches, a regular and attractive street grid, an extensive network of arcades, famous coffee shops and a number of world-renowned museums.
Turin is full of fountains to fill your water bottle or just have a drink. You can find these public fountains all across the city, from the center to the suburbs, providing you with free public water, and thanks to the nearby Alps, the public water is very clean and fresh.
Where before there were boatsheds, you will find many modern bars and nightclubs by the river Po at the Murazzi close to the bridge Ponte Vittorio Emanuele. Closer to the historical center, there are many charming old-world cafes.

ABOUT US:
We are the Taylors and we LOVE to travel. Even though we have 3 kids and it is hard to travel with kids, we do it anyways because nothing can replace the amazing experiences we get to have together as a family!
Traveling with kids is something we have a lot of practice with. Our first child flew on 23 flights before she was 6 months old. On the 23rd flight, someone asked us if this was our infant's first flight. Every time we go on a trip, our kids' favorite part is usually the hotel pool, but we still do it anyways.
We have gotten to visit Italy, China, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Macau, Mexico, Switzerland, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Maarten, Antigua, Taiwan, Singapore internationally and sixteen states in the United States including Alaska. We hope to visit MANY, MANY more places.
If you would like to know more about our family, you can check out our companion channel, Taylor Tadpoles. There we share some of the every day experiences of our lives. That is our way to remember the in between moments.

Places to see in ( Alessandria - Italy )
Alessandria is a city and comune in Piedmont, Italy, and the capital of the Province of Alessandria. The city is sited on the alluvial plain between the Tanaro and the Bormida rivers, about 90 kilometres southeast of Turin. Alessandria is also a major railway hub.
Alessandria was founded in 1168 with a charter as a free commune; it was sited upon a preexisting urban nucleus, to serve as a stronghold for the Lombard League, defending the traditional liberties of the communes of northern Italy against the Imperial forces of Frederick Barbarossa. Alessandria stood in the territories of the marchese of Montferrat, a staunch ally of the Emperor, with a name assumed in 1168 to honor the Emperor's opponent, Pope Alexander III. In 1174–1175 the fortress was sorely tested by Imperial siege and stood fast. A legend (related in Umberto Eco's book Baudolino, and which recalls one concerning Bishop Herculanus’ successful defense of Perugia several centuries earlier) says it was saved by a quick-witted peasant, Gagliaudo: he fed his cow with the last grain remaining within the city, then took it outside the city walls until he reached the Imperial camp.
Alot to see in Alessandria such as :
Citadella Militare (18th century)
The church of Santa Maria di Castello (14th and 15th century)
The church of Santa Maria del Carmine (15th century)
Palazzo Ghilini (1732)
Università del Piemonte Orientale
The Marengo Battle Museum
Antiquarium Forum Fulvii
Sale d'arte
I percorsi del Museo Civico
Museo del Fiume
Museo di Scienze Naturali e Planetario
Museo Etnografico C'era una volta
Museo del Cappello Borsalino
Sistema dei musei civici
Alessandria railway station, opened in 1850, forms part of the Turin–Genoa railway. It is also a junction for six other lines, to Piacenza, Novara, Pavia, Cavallermaggiore, Ovada and San Giuseppe di Cairo, respectively.

Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Centro Storico
The Center (or Torino Centro , ël Sènter in Piedmontese ) is the central and oldest district of the city of Turin , where the greatest number of monuments and historical places are located; since 1985 it constitutes, together with the Crocetta district , the District 1 of the city.
It is delimited:
north-east from Corso Regina Margherita and Corso San Maurizio (Borgo Vanchiglia )
north-west from corso San Martino and corso Bolzano ( Aurora district )
south-west from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II (Borgo San Salvario )
southeast from the river Po ( Borgo Po )
The city center of Turin coincides roughly with the typical perimeter of the Castrum and its colony of Augusta Taurinorum , or the first urban structure to chessboard, founded by the ancient Romans around 28 BC, and which extends for about 5 km². The relative topographic design is still recognizable in the road structure of most of the city, that is with orthogonal, perfectly parallel and perpendicular ways. There are also some important remains of the original Roman city.
The area called the Quadrilatero Romano torinese, therefore, is intended as the inside of the ancient Roman walls, essentially bounded by the current Corso Regina Margherita / Porta Palazzo , all Via della Consolata, the Via Cernaia / Via S. Teresa, Piazza Castello / Via Roma, although today only the western part of the aforesaid castrum is understood by this name . The east-west axis, called decumano maximo (corresponding to the current Via Garibaldi), in the past was called via Dora Grossa, because it is the seat of a water course at the center of the same street, in various points still visible: it connected the so-called Porta Praetoria(for some historians it was the Decumana ), later called Porta Fibellona (whose remains are now incorporated in Palazzo Madama in Piazza Castello , evolution of the ancient Acaja-Savoia Castle in the Middle Ages ) with the Porta Decumana (or otherwise called Porta Segusina ), because it led to the Val di Susa , located at the intersection of the current Via Garibaldi-Via della Consolata, today non-existent: a few meters from that intersection is only the Piazzetta Susina (or Segusina ), square with obelisk that was then called Piazza Savoia. What will instead be called the current area of Porta Susa , is more to the west.
Perpendicular to the decuman maximo then, there was the cardo maximo , on the axis approximately north-south, and corresponding to the current Via San Tommaso, which connected the Porta Principalis Dextera , preserved in its fundamental structures (still visible) Porte Palatine and some remains around Porta Palazzo ), with the Porta Principalis Sinistra(later called Porta Marmorea), located in Via Santa Teresa at the corner of Via San Tommaso and today non-existent. The route of the other thistles, developed along the axis of Via Porta Palatina and Via San Tommaso, today is not clearly recognizable due to interventions of the Middle Ages which partially canceled it. Next to the ( Porte Palatine ) there was also an ancient Roman theater , now partially covered by the new sleeve of the Royal Palace and partially annexed to the Museum of Antiquity . According to a plausible reconstruction, the area currently occupied by Piazza Palazzo di Città, the ancient piazza delle Erbe, because of the market that was held there, would have been the forumof the Roman town.
In addition to the aforementioned Porte Palatine and Palazzo Madama, remains of the Roman walls remain alongside the Porte Palatine themselves, both open-air and incorporated in back buildings, the base of a corner tower in Via della Consolata corner Via Giulio, and foundations the walls in the underground rooms of the Egyptian Museum , founded in 1824 ; the latter, famous in the world, is second only to that of Cairo , and is located at the ancient headquarters of the Academy of Sciences, near Piazza Castello. The Academy was founded by Joseph-Louis Lagrange as a European cultural and scientific center in the times of the Enlightenment .
