The Ruins of Ancient Carthage, Tunisia | Sights & Attractions of Carthage Tunisia
Carthage was an ancient city founded by the Phoenicians in 814 BC. It is located on the coast of North Africa, now Tunisia. It was a significant trading hub and one of the wealthiest cities in the classical world.
The city was protected by a wall that stretched over 40 kilometres, was 10 meters thick, and up to 13 meters high. The wall was built to defend the city against enemy attacks. 20,000 infantry, 4,000 cavalry, and 300 elephants were responsible for defending Carthage.
During the Magonid (Hannibal) dynasty, Carthage became the leading commercial power in the western Mediterranean. The city's success led to conflicts with the Greeks and then the Romans. Rome responded with force when Carthage invaded Sicily, resulting in a series of wars known as the Punic Wars.
In 146 BC, Rome destroyed Carthage during the Third Punic War. Julius Caesar rebuilt the city from 49 to 44 BC. Under Byzantine rule, Carthage remained the dominant city in North Africa until the Arab invasion in 698 CE, utterly destroying the city.
Today, the ancient ruins of Carthage are located on the edge of Tunis and remain an essential tourist attraction and archaeological site.

What I wish I knew before visiting TUNISIA | Ultimate Travel Guide 2024 - food, transport, safety

I just got back from my one-week solo trip around Tunisia, which I planned and organised completely by myself.
It was a beautiful and surprising country and I absolutely loved my time there, but I also did learn a few things that I wish I knew before going, so I've compiled all of that wisdom in to the ultimate Tunisia travel guide for you, so that you can go and have the perfect vacation there from day one :)
I also feel really grateful to the people I met there and the kindness they showed me, so I want to do my part for helping to boost the tourism industry there. There's kind of a lack of good recent Tunisia information online, and I wanted to change that.
Tunisia is full of a wealth of historical and cultural sites, old markets and medinas, fortresses, roman ruins, and of course, sites in the southern part in the sahara, like tataouine, where star wars was filmed ;) And all of that adds up to a place that absolutely suits budget-friendly solo travel.
where I get good-value travel e-sims (absolute lifesaver):
I went to Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, Sfax, Sousse and El Jem while in Tunisia. It was an amazing tour, and I connected the dots with buses, louages, trains and taxis.

Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd | Travel video
This video takes you on a journey to discover three must-see destinations in Tunisia: Tunis, Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said. Tunis, the capital of the country, is a cosmopolitan city where history and modernity mix. You'll be able to admire its many monuments, which are witness to its rich history, such as the Zitouna Mosque or the Bardo, the national museum of Tunis.
Carthage, located a few kilometers from Tunis, is an ancient city whose ruins bear witness to its importance in the history of the region. You will discover, among other things, the ancient theater, the Tophet, and the sanctuary of Tanit.
Finally, Sidi Bou Said is a picturesque village perched on the heights, known for its white houses with blue doors. It is a charming place where it is good to stroll through the flowered alleys and taste local specialties in the many cafes on the square.
The video gives you a glimpse of these three destinations, their history and culture, and makes you want to go there for a more in-depth discovery of Tunisia.

Carthage was once the capital of ancient Rome's greatest rival and the site of a titanic clash of civilisations. Today, its ruins bear testament to Rome's ultimate victory as you'll discover during this tour, which also takes in Sidi Bou Said and the Bardo Museum.
Under leaders such as Hannibal, Carthage was one of the greatest powers of the ancient world, but after Rome's victory almost 2,200 years ago, the city was razed and rebuilt as a Roman colony. See ruins such as the Baths of Antoninus, the villas of aristocrats, the amphitheatre and the Tophet sacrificial site.
Next up is a visit to Sidi Bou Said, a clifftop village of cobbled alleys fringed by whitewashed houses – the views over Tunis Bay are the icing on the cake. After lunch, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the Bardo Museum. Home to a magnificent collection of mosaics recovered from Roman villas in the region, there's also sculptures, jewellery and coins from the Carthaginian, Byzantine and Islamic periods.
