10 Best place to visit in Carterton United Kingdom

x

GREAT BRITAIN Shilton & Taynton, Oxfordshire (9 Oct 2022)

In September and October 2022 we visited England and Wales. Join us on our trips, day by day.
Shilton is a village and civil parish about 2.4 km northwest of Carterton, Oxfordshire. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 626.
Shilton village is on Shill Brook: a stream that rises southwest of Burford, flows through Shilton and Alvescot to Black Bourton, where it becomes Black Bourton Brook, which joins the River Thames downstream from Radcot. Shilton was historically part of the manor of Great Faringdon, and most of Shilton parish was an exclave of Berkshire until the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844 transferred it to Oxfordshire.

Taynton is a village and civil parish about 2.4 km northwest of Burford in West Oxfordshire. The village is on Coombe Brook, a tributary of the River Windrush. The parish is bounded in the south by the River Windrush, in the north partly by Coombe Brook and its tributary Hazelden Brook, in the west by the county boundary with Gloucestershire and in the east by field boundaries. The 2001 Census recorded the parish's population as 108.

10 Crap Towns in England

What are the crap towns in England? The name England evokes pride, and living in England on its own, in the UK for that matter, is something to be proud of. However, it is not all English towns that you can and should be proud of. Some places are considered ‘crap towns’ in England. Please note that this position doesn’t originate from us. It is from observation of those living in those towns in England and those who have visited. And those who are living in these towns agree that theirs are among the worst towns to live in England. Yet, we can’t find any ground to refute their position based on our private findings. In this video, you will see the towns that folks refer to as the 10 ‘crap towns’ in England.
10. Blackburn
We open this discussion in a large industrial town of Blackburn located in Lancashire. It’s north of the West Pennine Moors and on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley. Blackburn is just 8 miles east of Preston and also 20 miles northwest of Manchester. The mere consideration of its location alone could give some people an idea of the reason for its being labeled as one of the ‘crap towns’ in England.
Beyond that, however, pieces of ratings Blackburn is been given in this recent past are bad. Not long ago, the author of a popular report named it one of the most segregated towns in Britain. We dare add that the tough riot is one of the results of idleness, wants, and general dissatisfaction with life reflected in how people throng turn to street begging. You’ll see youngsters bunking off school and harassing passersby for money to be used in buying a cheeseburger.
9. Oldham
Not many people will expect this old town of Oldham which is also the administrative and authority center of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham to be described as a ‘crap town.’ But what does the reality on the ground portray about this large town in Greater Manchester? It shows that the town which is about 5 miles southeast of Rochdale and 6 miles northeast of Manchester is actually one of the worst towns to live in the UK. Don’t let us relate want we ourselves have found.
Some feel that the town lacks all culture and sophistication that can be emulated.
8. Castleford
“A trip to Castleford is a real eye-opener . . . and you need to keep your eyes open because if you dare to close them, they’d have your wallet faster than you could say” said a voter who voted Castleford one of the ‘crap town’ in the UK. Coming back home in England, a town with this recognition is certainly one of the crap towns in England. This town in the City of Wakefield within the county of West Yorkshire has always got bad reviews whenever it is to be discussed.
This low standard in this town may be due in part to its being a town of kith and kin. Sentimental attachments to relationships are likely to come in the way of standardization and adherence to the due process. This Wakefield’s largest town was also rued thus “you have to wonder whether the essence of chavdom stems from bad breeding, or in the case of Castleford, possible interbreeding.”
7. Blackpool
It might take a while before Blackpool get itself off a list like this. It is a consensus member in the rank of the ‘crap towns’ in the UK. We have also seen it mentioned in several lists of the worst towns to live in England and the UK. Blackpool is also on and off of lists of the most depressing towns to live in the UK. Why then is it still boasting of being the entertainment capital of the North it claims to be when a stratum of the society actually sees it as one of the most boring places to live in the UK?
A reviewer said of this town: “While in Blackpool all you smell is weed, McDonald's, KFC - you may think it's a jolly seaside resort with candy floss and donkeys but it's a scum-bucket for the transients who come here to draw benefits in a holiday resort instead of in an inner city.” Is that not what you would expect of a place described as a ‘crap town’ in England?

Witney Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 12 miles west of Oxford, is the town of Witney.

The first recorded reference to the town dates back to circa 969 AD where it was written as 'Wyttannige'. Its name derives from Old English for 'Witta's island' (N.B. 'island' in this sense may also refer to dry ground surrounded by marsh). It is believed that a Saxon King’s Council, known as the Witan, met here.

By the early 13th century, Witney was host to a weekly market. Being located a short distance from the Cotswolds, one of its main industries was wool. In particular, Witney became known for its woollen blankets. The first fulling mill recorded here dates back to 1223. The mills were powered by the River Windrush which runs through the town. At the peak of the industry, the blankets were exported all over the world. It wasn't until 2002 that the last blanket-making company in the town closed down.

At the southern end of the town centre is St Mary's Church. This dates mostly from the 13th century and reflects the wealth of Witney at this time owing to the aforementioned wool trade. The church is Grade I listed. Also of note architecturally is the buttercross (i.e. a sheltered market cross where dairy was traded). This dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, and features a clock turret from 1683 which was added following a bequest from a local draper. Across the road from the buttercross is Witney Town Hall, which was completed in 1786.

In 1861 a railway station opened in Witney. This was the western terminus of a branch line linking up to Yarnton (a village five miles north of Oxford city centre). This was converted to a goods depot and replaced by a new station in 1873, which closed to passengers in 1962, and to goods in 1965. Today, public transport to Witney consists of buses from Oxford, Cheltenham and various nearby towns and villages.

Burford Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 17 miles west, and slightly north, of Oxford, is the town of Burford.

Geographically, Burford is situated at the edge of the Cotswold Hills, adjacent to the River Windrush. It is sometimes referred to as the Gateway to the Cotswolds. The town's name is derived from Old English 'burh' and 'ford', meaning 'fortification at the river crossing'.

During the late 11th century, Burford was acquired by Norman nobleman Robert Fitzhamon, who granted it a market charter. On account of the nearby Cotswold Hills, sheep farming yielded a thriving wool industry. Aside from agriculture, the town was historically home to various professions including milling, weaving, tanning and saddle-making.

In circa 1175, work began on the construction of St John the Baptist Church (seen around the 15-minute mark). Additions were made up to the 15th century culminating with the spire. The church is Grade I listed. Another notable work of architecture is the Tolsey (seen at the 3-and-a-half minute mark), which was completed in 1520. This was used by the Guild of Merchants to collect payment for local markets and fairs, as well as a meeting point for wool merchants. Since 1960 it has served as a local history museum.

In 1627 Christopher Kempster was born in Burford. Kempster became Christopher Wren's master mason during the time of the construction of the current St Paul's Cathedral. Among his other works are the Tom Tower in Oxford, also alongside Wren, and Abingdon County Hall.

Owing to its position on a historical crossroads, Burford was a staging post for stagecoach passengers in the era prior to the railways. As such, it had a thriving coaching inn trade, providing rest for horses and passengers. The last stagecoach passed through in 1850 and the emerging railways missed out Burford entirely. Consequently, much of the town's architecture predates the Victorian era, with over 250 listed buildings. Today, public transport consists of direct buses to and from Witney, Carterton and various other nearby settlements.

A day out in Burford, Cotswolds.

Join us as we visit Burford’s famous High Street that sweeps downhill towards the River Windrush, its three-arched medieval bridge and its impressive church, both sides of the street flanked by an unbroken line of ancient houses and shops.

Little has changed over the centuries, Burford is popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping, especially antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. Here you can stay in a hotel frequented by King Charles and Nell Gwynn, dine where Nelson dined or visit England’s oldest pharmacy, a chemists since 1734.

Half way down the hill, the 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful, local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past.

Full route visual | 36: Monmouth - Hereford | VX13 FLE (15878)

The 36 is a very scenic route from Monmouth to Hereford via Welsh Newton, Llancloudy, St Weonards and Wormelow. Previously known as the 416, it currently runs four times a day in each direction, with three Sunday runs introduced in 2021 as part of the covid recovery plans for buses. The 36 often uses single-decker vehicles instead of double-decker. However, on the Saturday I filmed this, I got very lucky and got a double-decker, which was unlikely as there had only been one Saturday double-decker run since February, but the 36 had also been double-decked all week. It mainly runs on the A466, joining up with the 33 on the A49 near Callow towards Hereford. Enjoy!
