Orte (Viterbo) - Lazio - Discover Italy

Orte is a town, comune, former Catholic bishopric and Latin titular see in the province of Viterbo, in the central Italian region of Lazio, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Rome and about 24 kilometres (15 mi) east of Viterbo.

The Etruscans inhabited the area from the 6th century BC and called it Hurta,[4] as testified by the findings in a necropolis nearby, now preserved in the Vatican Museums. Two major battles between Etruscans and Romans (310 and 283 BC) were fought nearby on the shores of the Vadimone lake. The Romans were victorious both times.

The Romans domination made it the municipality of Horta (also Hortanum). Under the rule of Augustus it received numerous public works. Because of its strategic position, Orte was occupied in succession by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines and the Lombards. During the late 9th to early 10th century, along with much of central Italy, Orte was also held or threatened by the Saracens.

In the Middle Ages the city was never seat of a fief, becoming a free comune under a podestà (elected magistrature). Later it became part of the Papal States.

I Videoracconti di Roma & Più - CAPRANICA PRENESTINA - SANTUARIO DELLA MENTORELLA

Read the translation in English:
THE MENTORELLA SANCTUARY

The summit of Mount Guadagnalo, reaching a height of 1,200 metres, is the highest inhabited point in Lazio. We are 200 metres below the summit, at 1,018 metres, and we come under the municipality of Caprinica Prenestina. This is one of the oldest, if not the oldest sanctuary in Italy, which means in Europe!

The Chapel above us is dedicated to Saint Eustace. According to the tradition, he was one of the two most important generals in the Roman army, who was out hunting when the legend recounts that a vision of Christ appeared between the stag's antlers. From that moment Eustace left the pagan cult and converted to Christianity. At a later date the bell was added; the pilgrims who come here to pray also ring the bell to make their prayers heard by the Lord.

The second phase is dedicated to the story of Saint Benedict, in the Saint's cave. At the start of the 6th century AD, Benedetto da Norcia (Benedict of Nursia) was a very rich man who decided to leave everything behind and come to live in this cave. There was also an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the back of the cave and so many people leave photographs of their loved ones here and we hold masses for the souls in purgatory. You do feel something here, you can feel the presence of something supernatural, if we can put it like that.

John Paul II had a special rapport with the Virgin Mary. When he was still a cardinal, it was here she revealed to him that he would become Pope. He came here 40 times and left from here to attend the Conclave, then two weeks after his election to the Papacy, he returned on his first official pilgrimage as Pope. According to one of the Cardinals, he spoke to the Virgin Mary as though she was a living person. And we follow this tradition: this year we're celebrating 1,500 years of the sanctuary as a place of the cult of the Virgin.

Quale escursione fare a Viterbo ? 10 Aprile 2022 Gallese, Viterbo, Tuscia
