France: The town of Briare
Briare is a commune in the Loiret department in north-central France.
The town is situated at the extremity of the Briare Canal, which unites the river Loire and its lateral canal with the Loing and so with the Seine. The lateral canal of the Loire crosses the Loire near Briare by the Briare aqueduct which is 662 m long.
The Saint-Etienne church, built between 1890 and 1895 in the romano-Byzantine style, is characterized by the remarkable mosaic decorations of Eugène Grasset.
The Briare aquaduct will be subject of one of my next videos.
France: The Briare Aqueduct
The Briare Aqueduct carries the Canal latéral à la Loire over the River Loire on its journey to the River Seine in France. It replaced a river-level crossing from the canal to meet the Briare Canal that was hazardous in times of flood. Between 1896 and 2003 it was the longest navigable aqueduct in the World until the opening of the Magdeburg Water Bridge.
It is part of the Canal latéral à la Loire.
The Briare aqueduct was, for a long time, the longest steel canal aqueduct in the world. The aqueduct is 662 metres long and lost its title of longest aqueduct to the Magdeburg Water Bridge which crosses the Elbe and is 918 metres long. The aqueduct was designed by the engineers Léonce-Abel Mazoyer and Charles Sigault. The masonry abutments and piers were completed between 1890 and 1896 by Gustave Eiffel and the steel channel was completed by Daydé & Pillé of Creil. The aqueduct was inaugurated on 16 September 1896. It allowed the development of transport to the Freycinet gauge between the Loire and Seine, and is a registered historic monument in France.
The aqueduct is built on fourteen piers. These piers support a single steel beam in turn supporting a steel channel which contains more than 13,000 tonnes of water, 2.2 meters deep and 6 metres wide allowing boats with a 1.8m draught to cross. The width of the aqueduct, towpaths included, is 11.5 meters and its length is 662.7 meters. There is a line of standard lamps on each side of aqueduct. Each end is marked by two ornamental columns in imitation of the Pont Alexandre III in Paris. Eight sluices make it possible to empty the aqueduct in the event of severe freezing.

The Canal du Midi is a 240 kilometres long canal in Southern France.
Originally named the Canal royal en Languedoc and renamed by French revolutionaries to Canal du Midi in 1789, the canal was at the time considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century.
The canal connects the Garonne River to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean and along with the 193 kilometres long Canal de Garonne forms the Canal des Deux Mers, joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
The canal runs from the city of Toulouse down to the Étang de Thau near the Mediterranean.
Strictly speaking, Canal du Midi refers to the portion initially constructed from Toulouse to the Mediterranean - the Deux-Mers canal project aimed to link together several sections of navigable waterways to join the Mediterranean and the Atlantic:
first the Canal du Midi, then the Garonne which was more or less navigable between Toulouse and Bordeaux, then the Garonne Lateral Canal built later, and finally the Gironde estuary after Bordeaux.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert authorized the start of work by royal edict in October, 1666, with the aim of developing the wheat trade, under the supervision of Pierre-Paul Riquet, and construction lasted from 1666 to 1681, during the reign of Louis XIV.
The Canal du Midi is one of the oldest canals of Europe still in operation (the prototype being the Briare Canal).
The canal is a long ribbon of water stretching through the landscape and attracts many animal species.
Several species of fish such as bream breed in the canal, and others reproduce in its feeding rivers and spend part of their life in the canal.
The canal is also a very vegetated place. In the beginning Pierre-Paul Riquet planted trees to stabilize the banks of the canal especially where it overlooked the surrounding lands.
In the 18th century the trees planted along the canal become a source of income.
So mulberries were planted for rearing silkworms.
Then, with the end of the silk culture in 1772, the mulberry trees were replaced by the poplar from Italy which was the most productive wood.
The Canal du Midi was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
