Driving around beautiful Bredasdorp town in Western Cape, South Africa

Video of Bredasdorp - a small charming town in Western Cape Province of South Africa.

#Bredasdorp #SouthAfrica #Overberg

Related video:
Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum:

Bredasdorp is a town in the Southern Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa, and the main economic and service hub of that region. It lies on the northern edge of the Agulhas Plain, about 160 kilometres south-east of Cape Town and 35 kilometres north of Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa.

Tourist attractions of Bredasdorp include the Heuningberg Nature Reserve, many historical churches, and art galleries and craft shops. Bredasdorp is also home to the Shipwreck Museum which tells the stories of the 150 wrecks along the nearby Agulhas Reef. It is the only museum of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

The town of Bredasdorp was founded with the building of a Dutch Reformed Church in 1838 on the farm Langefontein. The town was named after Michiel van Breda, the first Mayor of Cape Town, who was also known as the father of South Africa's merino sheep industry. Van Breda and Pieter Voltelyn van der Byl could not agree on a location for the church; as a result two churches were built, and two towns, Bredasdorp and Napier, were established.

Bredasdorp is situated at an elevation of between 40 and 120 metres on the slopes of the Heuningberg (Afrikaans for Honey Mountain). There is no significant watercourse flowing through the town, although the Kars Rivier flows past a few kilometres to the east.

Bredasdorp shares in the Mediterranean climate experienced in most of the Western Cape. Its proximity to the ocean, which is less than 25 kilometres away at Arniston, moderates the variation of temperature. Bredasdorp is mostly surrounded by farmland, chiefly grain, cattle and sheep farming; on the south-west side of the town the Heuningberg Nature Reserve protects the indigenous fynbos vegetation.

The town has a museum dedicated to the shipwreck of the Arniston.
Audrey Blignault Room: Furnished in honour of Audrey Blignault who was born in Bredasdorp and who enjoyed national recognition as a writer.
The Heuningberg Nature Reserve is open to the public and views can be enjoyed of this rich fauna and flora area.

Besides the sheep farming, the town also boasts other agricultural activities, including wheat, canola, milk, and indigenous fynbos cultivation. The town is also the location of the offices of Kapula Candles, an international candle company that exports hand-painted candles to Europe and the United States. The population of the town got a boost during the middle 1980s with the establishment of both the South African Air Force's Air Force Base Overberg which is home to the Test Flight and Development Centre as well as the Denel Overberg Test Range near the small coastal village of Arniston.

BREDASDORP SHIPWRECK MUSEUM WESTERN CAPE SOUTH AFRICA PART 1

Video of one of the most comprehensive and interesting museums in Western Cape - Shipwreck Museum in small historical town Bredasdorp, South Africa.

#Bredasdorp #Shipwrecks #SouthAfrica

Shipwreck Museum is located at 6 Independent Street, Bredasdorp, Western Cape. The Bredasdorp Museum is primarily a maritime Museum whose exposition's main theme is Shipwrecks along the dangerous Southern Cape coast.
South African coastline is known as the Graveyard of Ships with well known ships like the 'Arniston', 'Birkenhead' and 'Queen of the Thames' coming to grief in these waters.
One of these lost ships is remembered in such a particular way as the American sailing ship Gentoo. She went down in Struys Bay. Among the survivors were a number of young servant-girls who had been engaged by wealthy people in the Cape Town suburbs. The girls soon drifted out of respectable employment into New Street and Keerom Street, which had bad reputations. They set up places which became known as Gentoo houses , with Malay orchestras to provide dance music. To this day a loose girl is called a Gentoo by the Cape Malays. Cape Agulhas, one of the great turning points of the oceans, ranks next to Table Bay as a graveyard of the sea.

Disaster on Saint Patrick's Day. In 1870 there was no regular line of shipping sailing between London and Australia via the Cape. Devitt & Moore, of England, planned a new service. The firm built their first ship, The Queen of the Thames, at a cost of £55,000. The new ship left England in November, 1870, and made a fast run to Melbourne, where she received a big welcome, for the Australians had never before seen anything to compare with the luxury of her fittings or comforts of her cabin accommodation. More than 200 passengers booked for the return trip. Besides her crew of 120, she carried a cargo of wool.
On St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1871, she was scheduled to anchor in Table Bay the next morning. The passengers got up a hilarious party to celebrate the voyage and the captain was present. Some of the passengers had not yet gone to bed before disaster overtook them for the ship ran hard ashore on a reef near Struys Point. Bredasdorp people showed the ship-wrecked Australians how hospitable South Africans can be.
The Queen of the Thames lay on the rocks with her masts still standing and her sails moving in the breeze. Six citizens of Port Elizabeth formed themselves into a syndicate and bought the ship for £15.000 and at once began to sell off the valuable contents.
The loss of The Queen of the Thames was a tragedy for the Cape because Devitt and Moore, discouraged, gave up the idea of building a fleet for the Australian run. It was not until the Orient Line began to call at Cape Town in 1878 that a regular service from England to Australia via Table Bay was established.
Queen Of The Thames 1871
Incidentally, although the wreck lies in 30 feet of water, a wooden section of the port side lies on the shore opposite the memorial. Although it is normally covered by sand it does sometimes become exposed after a strong southeast storm.
Wreck of the MFV Meisho Maru No. 38
Suiderstrand, South Africa
Today marks 38 years since this fascinating ship(one of the most recent ships to have ran aground) stranded along the L'Algulhas coastline.
The MFV Meisho Maru No. 38 was a small Japanese fishing vessel that ran aground in the stormy waters around L'Agulhas in the early morning hours of 16 November 1982. The accident occurred close to shore and the crew of 17 all managed to swim to safety, leaving the ship as the only casualty.
After surviving seas than, at times, can produce swells of up to 30 metres, the ship finally broke apart a few years ago.

Bredasdorp - Dit was nie maklik om te groet nie

Ons laaste Sondag (10 Julie 2022) wat ons Bredasdorp NG Kerk se erediens bygewoon het. Baie hartseer. Ons sal julle altyd mis. Julle is ń wonderlike gemeente en gemeenskap. Mag God julle ewiglik seën. 🙏

Places you won't believe exist in South Africa - a hidden shipwreck hike #capetown #southafrica

Cape Point is famous for being the southernmost tip of the Cape Peninsula. A visit there would usually entail things such as going up the Flying Dutchmen or a short hike near the cable car. But during our recent trip, thanks to S wanting to do a Shipwreck hike 😋, we were exposed to a plethora of other things that you can also do at Cape Point.

In fact, when we actually looked at the map, we realized you could have multiple visits and do something another activity altogether.

This time around went to hike the Olifantsbos Shipwreck Trail. This hike features the remains of the American Liberty ship that struck a rock nearby in the 1940s and the remains of it lie on the sea, mostly near the shore, and it allows you to explore and take pictures.

Unfortunately we didn't get much information when we asked a guide at the information desk, but that is why we are here right? 😉 Giving you the most recent information through our struggles haha! 😁

The hike starts at the parking area at Olifantbos. Once you are parked, you will find a sign there that gives you an indication of where to start. It's the path on your left, a path with beachy sand. You will probably hear the ocean and people to your right, but the shipwreck is to the left. Our online search told us that you will find yellow markers on the path that should direct you on where to go, but while hiking we couldn't find these. This made it slightly difficult to figure out where to start or if you are actually on the right path, and the other group hiking at the same time as us also seemed lost.

If you do know though, the path is fairly easy to navigate. The most tedious part is actually walking on the sand, since sand along the beach can be easy to sink into.

After about 40 mins of walking from the starting point, you will see the first remains of the ship. It is the bright yellow plastic thing shown in the reel. As you walk further, you will see more and more until you see the biggest part of the ship right near shore. As weird as it sounds, it was really cool to see it. Luckily, nobody died during the crash (phew!). There are so many different parts and as you stand amidst it, you can only imagine how the ship broke into several pieces during impact. You'll also see nature taking its course as the parts are moved around by the ocean and the waves.

In terms of time, the trail should take you about 1,5 hours round trip, including taking pictures and exploring the remains. The wind gets pretty hectic so make sure to take a windbreaker or jacket!

BREDASDORP SHIPWRECK MUSEUM WESTERN CAPE SOUTH AFRICA PART 3

Video of one of the most comprehensive and interesting museums in Western Cape - Shipwreck Museum in small historical town Bredasdorp, South Africa.

#BredasdorpShipwreckMuseum #WesternCape #SouthAfricaTourism
