The Brechin Castle Gardens are a real delight where every turn brings you a different vista and with a whole new variety of trees, shrubs or flowers to discover. The upper garden contains areas of lawn, mature ornamental tree plantings,
beds and borders and a superb shaped yew hedge.

Brechin Castle stands proud on a massive bluff of rocks above the River Southesk on the site of a much older fortress belonging to the Scottish kings.
Brechin Castle is a castle in Brechin, Angus, Scotland. The castle was constructed in stone during the 13th century. Most of the current building dates to the early 18th century, when extensive reconstruction was carried out by architect Alexander Edward for James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure, between approximately 1696 and 1709.
The grounds have been in the Ramsay family since the 12th century. In 1782, under the terms of a Maule will, William Ramsay adopted the name William Ramsay Maule, thereafter uniting the family names. Ramsay-Maule appears to have remodelled the frontage to a fashionable Georgian style at this time.
The seat of the Ramsay clan was moved from Dalhousie Castle in Midlothian to Brechin Castle in the early 20th century. The castle is the home of the Earl of Dalhousie, the clan chieftain of Clan Maule of Panmure in Angus, and Clan Ramsay of Dalhousie.

Brechin is a town and former Royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Traditionally Brechin was described as a city because of its cathedral and its status as the seat of a pre-Reformation Roman Catholic diocese.
In the centre of Brechin is a small museum in the Brechin Town House, and an award-winning tourist attraction, the Caledonian Railway. Along with the cathedral and round tower, part of the chapel of Brechin's Maison Dieu or hospital survives from the Middle Ages; the Maison Dieu was founded before 1267 by William de Brechin. The Maison Dieu chapel is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The Bank Street drill hall was completed in 1879.
The Guildry Incorporation of Brechin was formed in 1629 by merchants and traders in the Burgh and in 1666 obtained recognition of its rights under Decree of the Convention of Burghs
The 'city' of Brechin is situated on the banks of the River South Esk in rural Angus.
Brechin Town House and Museum houses a fascinating display which tells the 'City's' story over the last 2000 year. The Caterthuns, where you can see remains of iron-age hill forts, offers a fantastic insight into the skills of prehistoric man. On Sundays during the summer, listen out for the echo of the Caledonian Railway which wakens the town when the locomotives carry passengers between the Victorian Brechin Station and nearby Bridge of Dun. The Brechin Castle Centre, situated just off the A90, sits within 70 acres of country parkland and here you can enjoy some retail therapy plus refreshments in the coffee shop.

Interior On History Visit To The Cathedral in Brechin Angus Scotland

Brechin Cathedral, which is now closed, was part of the Church of Scotland, which is Presbyterian in government. This means that there are no bishops in the Church of Scotland, and it also means that, technically at least, there are no cathedrals. There are, however, a number of buildings whose history and pre-Reformation status mean that they have retained the title of cathedral even if they do not fulfil the functions of a cathedral. Brechin Cathedral is one of them. The origins of Brechin Cathedral are thought to date back to the establishment of a chapel somewhere nearby by St Dubhoc or Duthoc in around 600AD. By the late 800s it seems that a religious order known as the Céli Dé, or Culdees, had set up a church in Brechin, possibly on the site of an earlier Pictish establishment. This first enters recorded history in 972 when King Kenneth II endowed lands and property to the religious community here.
Famous Scots from Brechin include;
Sir David de Brechin, died 1320, who was a Scottish knight who fought on both sides during the Wars of Scottish Independence. He was the son of Sir William de Brechin by Elena Comyn, daughter of Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth de Quincy. Sir William was the son of Henry, an illegitimate son of David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon. He fought in the Earl of Surrey's army at the Battle of Dunbar, and was granted lands previously owned by Alan Durward. With Robert the Bruce, he was present at Peebles when the Bruce, John Comyn, and William Lamberton were sworn in as Guardians of Scotland. Brechin returned to Galloway with Bruce. Brechin returned to English service when he did homage to King Edward I of England at the Siege of Stirling Castle. In 1320, at a parliament at Scone by Perth, Perthshire, later known as the Black Parliament, Brechin was found complicit along with William de Soules, the Countess of Strathearn and others in a conspiracy to depose the king. For this offence Brechin was executed.
Sir Robert Alexander Watson Watt, born on 13 April 1892 in Brechin, died 5 December 1973, was a pioneer and significant contributor to the development of radar. Radar was initially nameless and researched elsewhere but it was greatly expanded on 1 September 1936 when Watson-Watt became Superintendent of a new establishment under the Air Ministry, Bawdsey Research Station near Felixstowe, Suffolk. Work there resulted in the design and installation of aircraft detection and tracking stations called Chain Home along the east and south coasts of England in time for the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. This system provided the vital advance information that helped the Royal Air Force win the Battle of Britain.

She has had the privilege of working with such famed directors as Oscar winner Maximilian Schell, Julie Taymor, Gian-Carlo Del Monaco, and Lotfi Mansuri during her tenure with Los Angeles Opera. Ms. Edwards made her professional singing debut at the age of 13, operatic debut at 19, and national television commercial debut at six months.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master of Music degree from UCLA and a Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College of Music. She lives with her husband in the United Kingdom, where they share their passion and love for castles and photography together.

Crieff is a market town in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Crieff lies on the A85 road between Perth and Crianlarich and also lies on the A822 between Greenloaning and Aberfeldy. The A822 joins onto the A823 which leads to Dunfermline.
Crieff has developed into a hub for tourism, trading mainly on its whisky and cattle droving history. Tourist attractions include the Caithness Glass Visitor Centre and Glenturret Distillery. Innerpeffray Library (established c. 1680), Scotland's oldest lending library, is also nearby. St. Mary's Chapel, adjacent to the library, dates from 1508. Both the library and chapel are open to the public: the library is run by a charitable trust, the chapel is in the care of Historic Scotland.
For a number of centuries Highlanders came south to Crieff to sell their black cattle whose meat and hides were avidly sought by the growing urban populations in Lowland Scotland and the north of England. The town acted as a gathering point or tryst for the Michaelmas cattle sale held each year and the surrounding fields and hillsides were black with the tens of thousands of cattle - some from as far away as Caithness and the Outer Hebrides (for comparison, in 1790 the population of Crieff was about 1,200 which led to a ratio of ten cows per person, similar to the sheep/human ratio in New Zealand).
During the October Tryst (as the cattle gathering was known), Crieff was the prototype 'wild west' town. Milling with the cattle were horse thieves, bandits and drunken drovers. The inevitable killings were punished on the Kind Gallows, for which Crieff became known throughout Europe.
In the nineteenth century Crieff became a fashionable destination for tourists visiting the Highlands and as a country retreat for wealthy businessmen from Edinburgh, Glasgow and beyond. Many such visitors attended the hydropathic establishment, Crieff Hypopathic Establishment there, now Crieff Hydro which opened in 1868, and remains in operation. Crieff still functions as a tourist centre, and the large villas stand as testaments to its use by wealthy city-dwellers. Crieff was once served by Crieff railway station. The station was opened in 1856 by the Crieff Junction Railway, but was closed in 1964 by British Railways as part of the Beeching Axe.

We took a fast RIB from Anstruther in Fife with isleofmayboattrips.co.uk to our favourite island on the Firth of Forth. In our opinion, this is one of the best day trips in Scotland - beautiful weather, an exhilarating journey, thousands of birds (including of course puffins!), lighthouses and the fresh air of a stunning island. What more could we ask for? Well, fish and chips from the Anstruther Fish Bar afterwards, that would be a nice way to round off a perfect day :)
