Epic Northern Ghana Tour - Bolgatanga, Paga and the Witchcraft Village of Gambaga

Northern Ghana is so much more than just Mole National Park.

I love Mole Park, but Bolgatanga has an awesome basket market and a street market that is endlessly entertaining. There's a great Cultural Center there, too.

Awesome Guide:
Abdullah on WhatsApp: +233 240 519 181
Check out Abdullah's website:

Paga is the place to go to visit the Chief's Crocodile Pond - and pet a croc for yourself.

BONUS Story - Don't make the same mistake I did at the border with Burkina Faso.

And Gambaga is a place of great mystery and intrigue - a witchcraft village for the ages.

In this tour of Northern Ghana, we set out in the morning and were back by the next afternoon. It's an excellent side trip to fit into your itinerary.

This is How Beautiful BLOGATANGA Looks Like in 4K // Aariel View DJIMini.

Bolgatanga (it means Stone City, bolga in Gurune means stone) is the capital of the Ghanaian Upper East Region - the most north-eastern province of the country. The city, which had a population of 70,000 according to the Bradt Guide of 2003, originated as a marketplace on the south side of the Trans Sahara trade routes that have guaranteed vibrant trade over the centuries — and cultural influence of the Saharan-adjacent parts of Sub-Saharan Africa by the Arab-Muslim cultures of North Africa and the Middle East.

Bolgatanga is half Islamic, half Christian. There is a large and well-visited cathedral (the Sacred Heart Cathedral, center of the diocese of Bolgatanga-Navrongo, but there are also many mosques in the city. The market is still today the largest and most varied in the region. Traders often travel for days, from the distant surroundings (including from Burkina Faso, which is about 40 kilometers north of Bolgatanga), to be able to sell their goods on market days (every three days).

Tamale is the largest city in northern Ghana, with a population of about 200,000, but Bolgatanga is also growing. Characteristic of this type of cities is the large surface area and the highly dispersed location of the houses. Only in the centre is some high-rise to be found, but this too is rarely higher than a floor or three. The number of internet cafes, fast food restaurants and other Western businesses has been increasing faster and faster in recent years.

Yet essentially Bolgatanga remains a simple provincial capital, an enlarged version of the other villages in the region. The city is the centre of Gurense land, the region where the Gurensilive , a people called the Frafraby the British, after the word (farafara) with which the Gurensi welcomed the colonizer. Gurenseland has five paramount chiefs, which are chiefs who formally have no one above them (not even the Ghanaian president) and are the superiors of the ordinary chiefs from the surrounding villages. This traditional leader mainly performs administrative duties and has some judicial functions. Of course, the region also has a representative of the government, and elects its own MPs for the national representation, but the administration in Gurenseland is still largely based on traditional structures. Thus, there is a chief for the administrative and judicial duties and a land priest (tindaana) for religious matters - which also often overlap with administrative and legal issues. Those who do not adhere to a traditional religion, but are Muslim or Christian, can partly withdraw from this hierarchy.

Full Drive - Bolgatanga to Paga Crocodile Pond, with Music, in Northern Ghana

When you visit Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana be sure to take this short road trip to Paga to visit the Chief's Crocodile Pond.

They call a croc to the shore where you can hold its tail and even crouch over it. Just be sure to avoid the head.

These crocs have a spiritual connection with the original founder of Paga and there is a legendary deal brokered that says the humans will not harm the crocodiles and the crocodiles will not harm the humans - or the goats that hang out around the pond.

At night the crocs are likely to be found wandering around the town and they never attack humans. It's a peaceful co-existence.

By the way, there are more than 200 crocs in the pond and only some care to interact with tourists (they're rewarded with fresh fowl). None of them are forced to do anything.

Bolgatanga | Ghana | Upper East Region, tourism, crocodiles, Sumbrungu Painted Houses , Tongo Hills

Bolgatanga is the capital of Upper East Ghana.Beautiful places to travel to game : Public bus from Accra/Kumasi/Tamale is cheap and safer than the maniac private bus drivers. It takes 3 hours from Tamale, leaving around 8am so make sure you make a bathroom stop on the lunch stop as you might not be able to otherwise.
Private car from any medium sized town with driver is only about €20 a day.

Sumbrungu Painted Houses One of the most distinctive features in the Upper East Region are the traditional villages that dot the landscape. These villages generally feature round thatched roof huts, painted with decorative motifs in striking colors. A beautiful example of traditional paintings is found in the village of Sumbrungu, eight kilometers from Bolgatanga on the way going to Paga.
The Tongo Hills and Tengzug Shrine are located in the village of Tengzug, 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) southeast of Bolgatanga. With its landscape dominated by large granite formations, the Tengzug area evolved as the sacred centre of the Talensis people, an ethnic group in Northern Ghana. The Tengzug Shrine is located in the Tongo hills and is believed to grant luck and prosperity to all those who visit it. Beware of the exorbitant price for a profoundly uninspired village tour (15 cedis), the price of which you won't be told about until afterwards.
The Tomb of Naa Bbewaa, who is the founder of the Mole-Dagbon tribes, is located in the town of Pusiga. Legend states that Naa Gbewaa never died but simply vanished during a heated battle. The shrine was thought to have been built in the 14th century in commemoration of Naa Gbewaa, and is today a place of spiritual reverence.
The Bolgatanga Library is a notable design of award-winning American architect J. Max Bond, Jr., who was influenced by Le Corbusier. Bond lived in Ghana for four years in the 1960s, escaping racism in the United States. The Bolgatanga library was his first major project while working for the national construction company. The design features perforated walls and an umbrella shaped roof, so the structure remains cool and well ventilated.
Forty kilometres (about 25 miles) from Bolgatanga, along the Burkina Faso border, is Paga, home to the Sacred Crocodile Ponds. These are purportedly the friendliest crocodiles in Ghana, and it is said that the souls of the royal family reside in them. The crocodiles roam freely throughout the ponds

Ghana - Bolgatanga (2), Upper East Region

This clip shows my last day in Bolgatanga, capital of the Upper East Region of Ghana, where I had just visited a hotel in the southern part of the city. The footage starts immediately after, driving along the main Tamale-Bolga Road, and into the centre of Bolgatanga, where you can see the junction that is the turn-off to head up to the somewhat unstable township of Bawku. However, the vehicle heads along the main road into town to the tro-tro station, of which a short segment is shown before departing, heading south this time along the Tamale-Bolga Road (as I was heading back to Tamale that day).

DRIVING Tour of Bolgatanga in Ghana, Northern Region, with Music

This is a collection of driving bits around Bolgatanga in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Bolgatanga surprised me. It has its older, more traditional areas, but much of it is very modern and growing fast. Bolga is quite the dichotomy, as you'll see in the video. It's going to be a full blown metropolis soon.

Honestly, from descriptions, and obviously incorrect notions, it's more what I expected of Yendi. But Yendi is significantly more traditional than Bolga. Just observations and a subverting of expectations.

By the way, I tried a little something different with the style of music. Let me know in the comments if you like this direction, or not.
