The Lead Road Part 1: Blaydon to Hedley-on-the-Hill
2nd February 2017
-----
If you would like to support me, I am raising money for surgery in Spain:
-----
Following an old 18th century drover's route that took lead from the smelt works at Dukesfield (near Slalely) and from the Allen Valley and beyond to Blaydon where a more efficient method of extracting the silver from the lead made the journey worthwhile.
There were several lead drover routes to Blaydon but the most used and hence most famous was the Lead Road. Link to map of the drover routes to Blaydon:
I split the route into six main stages:
1) Blaydon to Hedley-on-the-Hill
2) Hedley-on-the-Hill to Slaley
3) Slaley to Dukesfield and Whitley Chapel
4) Carriers' Way: Killhope to Ladycross (Slaley Forest)
5) Whitley Chapel to Hangman Hill (Long Drag and Broadway)
6) Spartylea to Hangman Hill (Long Drag and Broadway)
Today most of the route is tarmac road and a favourite for cyclists and speeding motorists but after the route reaches Slaley it offers five main routes over the moors to the Allen Valley (The Carrier's Way, Broad Way, The Long Drag, The Black Way, and a nameless route to Allendale).
The weather was awful as I hit the tail end of Storm Doris. This robbed me of some of the more spectacular views.
For further details on the history of the lead road:

Shibdon Pond Local Nature Reserve, (4K)
Shibdon Pond Local Nature Reserve.
In the nineteenth century this site had been a series of wetland pastures, but this changed when twentieth century mining and railway activities altered the water level and formed the pond. Between 1837 and 1951 Blaydon Main Colliery dominated the site. The capped shaft can still be seen behind Blaydon Swimming Pool. This area used to be a refuse dump, but careful planting and management of native British trees will ensure a rich new habitat for the future. The grassland provides habitat for voles and shrews which attract hunting kestrels.

NEWCASTLE QUAYSIDE & ST JAMES' PARK, 2023. #djiglobal #djimini3pro #rivertyne #newcastle #gateshead
Quayside.
The Quayside is a lively stretch along the River Tyne, home to the landmark Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Once a commercial dock, the area is now a nightlife hotspot with stylish bars, restaurants, and clubs. On Sundays, Quayside Market sells local produce, crafts, and street food. The opposite bank is dominated by the modern BALTIC art gallery and the steel curves of Sage Gateshead, a popular concert venue.
If you’ve not visited the Quayside Market in a while, you might be in for a surprise. It is a vibrant and flourishing street market along the river from the Swing Bridge to the near the Millennium Bridge. Whether you're a foodie or fashion conscious, a browser or a buyer the market offers fresh and local, traditional and modern, history and culture. There is something for everyone at this historic and local market.
St James' Park.
St James' Park is a football stadium in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It is the home of Premier League club Newcastle United F.C. With a seating capacity of 52,305 seats, it is the eighth largest football stadium in England.
St James' Park has been the home ground of Newcastle United F.C since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880. Throughout its history, the desire for expansion has caused conflict with local residents and the local council. This has led to proposals to move at least twice in the late 1960s, and a controversial 1995 proposed move to nearby Leazes Park. Reluctance to move has led to the distinctive lop-sided appearance of the present-day stadium's asymmetrical stands.
Besides club football, St James' Park has also been used for international football, at the 2012 Olympics, for the rugby league Magic Weekend, rugby union World Cup, Premiership and England Test matches, charity football events, rock concerts, and as a set for film and reality television.
