Wigton Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Cumberland), and around 10 miles southwest of Carlisle, is the town of Wigton.
The name 'Wigton' is derived from Old English: 'Wicga's tūn', meaning Wicga's farm/settlement, where Wicga was a Saxon chieftain. Geographically it is located between the Lakeland Fells and Solway Firth, the latter of which forms part of the border between England and Scotland.
In 1262 Wigton was granted a market charter during the reign of Henry III. Industries historically included agriculture, tanning and linen weaving. At the heart of the town is St Mary's Church which dates from 1788, replacing a previous church from the 12th century on the same site.
In 1843 the railway arrived in Wigton, courtesy of the Maryport and Carlisle Railway. Today this is situated on the Cumbrian Coast Line between Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle, the latter of which takes around 20 minutes to reach from here.
At the northern end of the high street is the George Moore Memorial Fountain. This granite fountain was placed here in 1872 dedicated to the memory of his first wife, Eliza Ray. George Moore was a lace merchant and philanthropist, who served his apprenticeship as a draper in Wigton. On each side of the fountain is a bronze relief by pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner showing the Acts of Mercy, 'Visiting the Afflicted', 'Clothing the Naked', 'Instructing the Ignorant' and 'Feeding the Hungry'. Above each sculpture is a carving of the face of Mrs Eliza Moore surrounded by leaves.
In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Wigton has been part of the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria.
TV broadcaster and author Melvyn Bragg was born in nearby Carlisle and raised in Wigton.

Kirby Muxloe Castle
Welcome to the new series of the History Roadshow, today we visit Kirby Muxloe Castle. Kirby Muxloe Castle, is a ruined, fortified manor house in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire. William, Lord Hastings, began work on the castle in 1480, founding it on the site of a pre-existing manor house.
The castle was rectangular in design, and would have comprised four corner towers, three side towers and a large gatehouse, all protected by a water-filled moat; the centre of the castle would have formed a courtyard. Of these buildings, only the gatehouse and the west tower survive today, partially intact.
William, Lord Hastings, was the chamberlain of the royal household and a favourite of Edward IV. William had acquired extensive estates across the Midlands during the Wars of the Roses, much of it confiscated from his enemies.
In 1474, Edward granted William the right to fortify, four of his manors and to build deer parks around them. Among these was Kirby Muxloe, which the King authorised to be turned into a castle and surrounded by a large park of 2,000 acres
Work began on the castle in October 1480, under the direction of Roger Bowlott, who was Lord Hasting's steward and became the clerk of works for the project. Most of the existing manor house was protected during the work, and probably continued in use while the new castle was built around it.
A picturesque setting awaits, as you stroll around this fortified mansion, once full of power and glory now reduced to a part of English history that serves us a well told story of a man and his goals in life which was left incomplete.
Kirby Muxloe Castle serves as a poignant memorial to his ambition and sudden demise.

A Short Drive Through Waddesdon Village Buckinghamshire.
Waddesdon is a village in Buckinghamshire, England, 6 miles (10 km) west-north-west of Aylesbury on the A41 road. The village also includes the hamlets of Eythrope and Wormstone, Waddesdon was an agricultural settlement with milling, silk weaving and lace making enterprises.
The name 'Waddesdon' means 'hill of a man named Wott'.
The parish church of St Michael and All Angels dates from 1190 with medieval and Victorian additions.
Waddesdon was involved in the marriage of Maud Holland in the 1360s. Edward the Black Prince agreed with Hugh de Courtenay, 2nd/10th Earl of Devon that Maud would marry Devon's grandson Hugh Courtenay. Devon promised to award Maud an annuity of 200 marks and the manors of Sutton Courtenay and in Buckinghamshire. The arrangements were approved by Pope Urban V and Edward III. The wedding had taken place by February 1365, when the manors were granted to Maud.
Between 1897 and 1936, Waddesdon had train services on the Aylesbury and Buckingham Railway (later part of the Metropolitan) at Waddesdon railway station, two miles from the village. There was also a halt on the Brill Tramway.
In 1874, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild bought a large estate in the area and built the mansion of Waddesdon Manor on a hill-top above the village. He transformed Waddesdon into an estate village, with new houses for employees and tenants, a school, a public house, cricket pavilion and village hall.
Waddesdon Manor and grounds are now the property of the National Trust, and Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild retains the estate and a house at nearby Eythrope.
