Bishnupur is a town in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. It’s known for its Hindu temples made from local terracotta, such as the pyramid-shaped Rasmancha, established around 1600.
Ornate carvings adorn the walls of Jor Bangla Temple. North, Madan Mohan Temple is decorated with scenes from Hindu legends, including the Mahabharata. In town, the Bishnupur Museum displays manuscripts and ancient sculptures.

The most convenient way to reach Bishnupur is by train. Bishnupur (Station code : VSU ) is well commented by train from Santragachi, Howrah and Kharagpur.

Winter is the ideal time to visit Bishnupur. Although one may visit bishnupur throughout the year.
What to see in Bishnupur :
Rasmancha : Rasmancha was build by malla king Hambir, this is the oldest structure of Bishnupur. Entry fee : ₹30/ head.
Gumghar :
A sasure structure located on the top of a small mound. Some opine that it was a prison while others believe it was a granery.
Shyamrai Temple : This is popularly known as Panchachura Temple because of its five pinnacles.
Jor Bangla Temple : Locally known as Kestorai Temple.
Radheshyam Temple : Just adjacent to Jor Bangla temple there is a temple with one pinnacle named as Radheshyam temple. There is an Islamic style gate infront of this temple.
Other places are : Lalji Temple, Stone Chariot, Madan Mohan temple, Dalmadal canon, Chinnamasta Temple, Bishnupur Mela, Bishnupur Pora Matir Haat (Every Saturday 1pm onwards), Baluchori Saree Shop and Panchmura Terracotta Village.
Entry fee: ₹30/head for Rasmancha, which can be used for other temples of Bishnupur.
Parking fee : ₹30 for each places.

Visit to Bishnupur, Bankura, West Bengal
Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal and located at about 132 km from Kolkata. It is famous for its terracotta temples and Baluchari sarees. The town has a glorious past that is reflected in its rich architecture, music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving. It prospered in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages of time. The Terracotta tiles depict stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Temples like the Shyam Ray Temple, the twin shrines of Jorbangla and the Rasmancha are a must visit. Apart from its heritage, Bishnupur is also known for its traditional handloom sarees. Pottery, artiefacts and even jewellery made of terracotta in Bishnupur are also very popular. Bishnupur is also famous for the School of Hindustani Music which flourished under royal patronage along with the Bishnupur School of Painting. This style of music is still being kept alive in local academies of music. The history of Bishnupur can be traced back to 694 AD, when King Raghunath founded the Malla dynasty. However, it was much later in 994 AD that the place was named Bishnupur. The name is derived from the name of the Hindu God Vishnu. The most powerful king of the dynasty was King Raghunath Singh Dev II, who ruled from 1626 AD. At that time the administration of Bengal was in the hands of Shah Lahan and his son Shuja. He developed a close friendship with the king and there followed a period of peace when art and music already flourishing, reached great heights. It was during this period that the Jorbangla Temple was erected.

If you are planning to visit West Bengal or if you are looking for a short weekend trip from Bengal, then this video is for you. Bankura district of west Bengal is a treasure trove of beautiful experiences.
N: Yes, Bankura has something for everyone. There are majestic terracotta temples for the architecture lovers and the religious tourists, Beautiful terracotta articles, sarees and paintings for the shopaholics and short trekking options for the adventure lovers. In this video we would show you a lot of experiences that Bankura has to offer from Mecha sondesh to terracotta temples. This video is going to be long. Therefore, get some snacks to munch on while watching this video.
R: The road trip to Bishnupur from Durgapur takes about one and a half hour. On reaching Bishnupur you would be surprised to see so same ancient temples located everywhere. Some are properly preserved and some at various phases of restoration. Most of these temples have beautiful and intricate terracotta work all over the temple depicting flowers, animals, and tales from the epics of Ramayana, Mahabharata and Krishna leela.
This region was earlier known as the ‘mallabhum’ as this was ruled by the Malla dynasty. The word malla refers to wrestling and the rules of this dynasty were skilled wrestlers. Later on, when the malla rules adopted vaishanavism, this area was renamed as Bishnupur meaning the ‘The abode of Lord Vishnu’.
N: This is the Madan Mohan temple. Located near the sankhari Bazaar area, this temple made of bricks was constructed in 1694 AD.
The architectural style of this temple is known as ‘ek ratna’ i.e this temple has a single shikhara on top of Bengal chala style roof. Bengal chala architecture is a unique architectural form found in Bengal.These temples are constructed resembling the roofs of mud huts found in Bengal villages.
R: Madan mohan temple was built by the Malla king Durjan singha. The malla kings were vaishnavs or the followers of Lord Vishnu.Hence, most of the temples are dedicated to Lord Radha and Krishna. The Madan mohan temple is also dedicated to Lord Radha and Krishna.
N: The terracotta works on this temple walls are really noteworthy. You would be mesmerised by the beauty and intricacy of the works. The presiding deity is worshipped daily and various festivals like Ras Utsav and Dol Utsav (i.e) Holi is celebrated in this temple every year.
R: This is the Radha shyam temple.This temple was built by the Malla king Chaitanya singha the year 1758 AD. This temple has a dome shaped shikara placed on top of a Bengal chala. This temple is also, very beautifully decorated with terracotta panels depicted floral motifs,geometric designs and taled from Mahabharata and the Puranas.
N: This temple has a beautiful nahabatkhana, near the gateway. During the days of the Malla dynasty, musicians used to play sehnai and other musical instruments at thus nahabatkhana.
N: This temple is set among a beautifully maintained park.The greenery surrounding this beautiful temple makes it look more beautiful. You can take a parikrama around this temple and you would see how beautiful the decorations are!!!!
R: The presiding deity of this temple is Radha Krishna,Nitai Gaur and Jagganath dev.
N:This is the Mrinmoyee Temple located right opposite to the Radha shyam temple.This temple was built by Malla king Jagatmalla in the year 997 AD which is Dedicated to goddess Durga. The idol of durga is made of clay from the banks of the river ganga and has a Rajasthani style of decoration.It is said that this temple was established by the King after getting orders from the goddess herself in his dream. Since the ancient times till today, Durga Puja is celebrated with great dedication every year at this temple.On of the unique rituals of this Durga Puja is that during the sandhi puja i.e on Ashthami,a cannon is fired. The cannon is located at the temple itself. Just behind the temple there used to be the main Palace of the Malla king which is now totally in ruins.
R:Just a few kilometres away from the Mrinmoyee temple is located the Radha lal jiu temple.This temple was constructed by the malla king in the year 1658. Recently a beautiful garden has been created near the temple and this enhances the beauty of the temple even more.
Just like the other temples this stone temple is also very beautiful and one would have a wonderful time admiring the beauty of the designs.However, there is presently no deity in this temple.The idol has been kept at another temple.

Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal and located at about 132 km from Kolkata. It is famous for its terracotta temples and Baluchari sarees. The town has a glorious past that is reflected in its rich architecture, music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving. It prospered in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages of time. The Terracotta tiles depict stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.
1. Rasmancha : It is the oldest brick temple. Built by King Bir Hambir. The temple has an unusual elongated pyramidical tower, surrounded by hut-shaped turrets, which were very typical of Bengali roof structures of the time.
2. Jor-Bangla Temple : Built by King Raghunath Singha Dev II. The ornate terracotta carvings are set off by the roof in the classic chala style of Bengal architecture.
3. Madanmohan Temple : King Durjana Singh Deva built the temple in the ekaratna style, a square flat-roofed building with carved cornices, surmounted by a pinnacle. Impressive carvings on the walls depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas.
4. Lalji Temple : Built by Bir Singha II in ekaranta style. It is built on a square raised plinth, consisting of ornamental stucco decorations on low relief carvings.
5. Chhinnamasta Temple : Built by the Guin family of Midnapore.
6. Mrinmayee Temple : Originally built by Jagat Malla in 997 CE. The Durga puja takes place for 15 days and all the other temples in Bishnupur does not start the puja until the cannon has been fired from the temple.
7. Radhya Shyam temple : Built by Chaitanya Singha in ekaratna style. It was built in a square plan, consisting of a dome-shaped shikhara and stucco motifs depicting floral, geometric and depiction of the life from Puranas.
8. Dalmadal Canon: The cannon named as Dal Madol was built by the Malla kings to fight the Maratha invasion. This Cannon is near Chinomasta temple and is significant for the people of Bishnupur as well as Bengal. The cannon measures about 3.8 m in length and has a barrel of 28.5 cms. It was built in the year 1742 under Raja Gopal Singh to protect Bishnupur from Marathas. The Cannon is built with iron materials and doesn’t have any rust, though it is exposed to rain and sun since 18th century.
9.The Shyamarai Temple or Pancharatna Temple is to the north of the Bishnupur village and is famous for its rich architectural beauty. The square-shaped temple has its interior and exterior decorated with wonderful terracotta tiles. There are various pictures and carvings that depict the stories of Lord Krishna, as a cowherd, with the flute and the Gopis. Standing on a low square plinth this Pancharatna brick temple was built by the Malla King Raghunath Singha in AD 1643 and noted for elaborate terracotta ornamentations.

These temples are made of bricks, laterite, Clay and laterite stones. The town prospered in the 17th and 18th centuries and was the capital of the Malla kingdom. Under the Malla kings, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture involving the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work.
