BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:
Location 1. Beersheba is located in the Negev, which is a semi-desert. 2. The tel of Beersheba lies a little east of the modern city, which is the region's largest city and administrative capital. 3. It’s about 45 miles (70 km.) south of Jerusalem and about 30 miles (45 km.) from the Mediterranean Ocean. 4. It’s located between the Beersheba and Hebron Streams (which are dry much of the time). 5. It was located on a significant travel route linking Africa and Egypt with Asia and Europe. The Nabateans, who were centralized in Petra, passed through here on caravans with trade goods. Historical Background 1. Beersheba is the beginning place of God’s master plan for the Nation of Israel. 2. In essence, each person has the same tendencies as the Nation of Israel. Therefore, when God wanted to speak to all mankind, He used Israel as the example (1 Cor. 10:11). 3. The name Negev means “dry land” in Hebrew, but the Bible often uses the term to refer to the southern part of Israel. 4. Because Beersheba is in the Negev, which receives an annual rainfall of 6–8 inches (18 cm.), there was not a lot of population in the area, and most of the people living here were nomadic shepherds. 5. Beersheba was in the territory of the Philistines (Gen. 21:33–34). 6. After a conflict over Abraham’s well, which he had dug in Beersheba, a covenant was made between Abimelech and Abraham to settle the dispute (Gen. 21:25–34). To ratify the covenant, Abraham gave Abimelech seven ewe lambs. Therefore, Beersheba means “well of the oath” or “well of the seven lambs.” 7. When the writers of Scripture wanted to speak of all Israel, they would often use the expression “from Dan (the northern-most city) to Beersheba (the southern-most city).” Places of Interest 1. Four Horned Altar This altar belonged to cult worship or was misused by the Israelites as it doesn’t comply with Scripture. Altars were to be made of “stones on which you have not used an iron tool” (Deut. 27:5). This altar used hand shaped stones. The altar was likely one of those torn down during the religious reforms of King Josiah (2 Kings 23:8). 2. Abraham’s Well – 230 feet deep (70 m.) 3. Outer Gate 4. Inner Gates 5. City Square 6. Governor’s Palace 7. Roman Bath Pools 8. Basement House 9. Four-room House 10. Casement Wall 11. Roman Fortress 12. Observation Tower 13. Storerooms 14. Street with Shops 15. Beersheba Stream 16. Hebron Stream 17. Water Cistern

Galilee video tour | Horns of Hittin & Nabi Shu'ayb
with David Hyman, professional Israeli tour guide to less-visited areas of the Galilee region. We will start by visiting the holiest shrine and pilgrimage destination for the Druze community in Israel. The tomb of Nabi Shu'ayb ( Prophet Jethro). The Druze community is a small minority in Israel and they live in villages and small towns in Galilee, Carmel, and the Golan Heights. They belong to a monotheistic faith called El Muwachidun, and other communities can be found in Lebanon and Syria. We spent some time at this holy and spiritual site and watched many Druze families visit the tomb and pay their respect. We then started climbing the mountain of Karney Hittin ( The Horns of Hattin) and on the way up we spotted an extremely interesting plant = the Mandrake plant. We arrived at the summit of Mount Hattin and retraced the details of the famous battle that happened here in the year 1187, July 4th. The Crusader army recruited all the fighting forces possible, to confront the Muslim army that placed a siege on Tiberias. The two armies clashed on the Horns of Hittin. The Muslims under their leader Salah A din ( Saladin) circled the crusaders and set fire to the fields. The Crusader army under king Guy De Lesignian suffered from the heat and lack of water and their lines broke. the result of the battle was devastating for the crusader kingdom. The majority of the army were killed, many were taken prisoners and others escaped. The Crusaders lost Jerusalem and 70 years later, they lost the entire country and that ended the 200 years of the crusader period.

Beit Shearim national park - Jewish catacombs in the north of Israel.
Beit Shearin is a national park in the north of Israel, nearby Kiryat Tivon, 20 minutes ride from Haifa. It is a UNESCO world Heritage site for being a unique testimony of ancient Judaism and a Treasury of artworks and inscriptions.
It was a Jewish city in the Roman Era and mainly it is known for the large necropolis that was found there. A large cemetery that most of it is dated to the 3rd to the 6th century.
At the end of the 2nd century the Sanhedrin was situated in Beit Shearim and one of the greatest Rabbis lived here. His name was Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi (Judah the Prince) and he was the chief editor of the Mishna. In his old age, He left the town and moved to Sepphoris. The Rabbi asked to be buried in Beit Shearim.
Beit Shearim turned to be the primary jewish cemetery outside of Jerusalem. It attracted Jewish people from all over Israel and also from the Diaspora that wanted to be buried next to the rabbi.
In the archeological park there are some special catacombs and many decorated Sarcophagus. Some of the decoration shows greek mythology gods and characters such as Zeus, Nikka etc...
Although it is very unusual to see figure decorations in Jewish art, there are many proofs in archaeological site from the same period that it was common among Jewish communities, especially in Synagogues. It proves that Judaism of this period didn't see pagan characters as threat anymore.
In all the caves and catacombs, there are no bones anymore and there's a lot of evidence to antiquities robbery.

Tel Gezer - a biblical city on the main road to Jerusalem. Solomon's gate was found here.
Tel Gezer is an archaeological site situated half way between Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, overlooking the Ayalon valley.
Gezer was a Canaanite city dated mostly to the 2nd millennia B.C, middle bronze age.
It was one of the largest city in the land of Canaan and its location was startigicaly important because it was close to the Via Maris (ancient road from Egypt to Mesopotamia) and controlled the road from the coastal plain to the mountains.
from the Canaanite period a lot of evidence was found. the most amazing discovery made in Gezer was the water system, 60 meter deep. A shaft led to the underground water was fully discovered and recently a staircase was set for the visitors.
The Canaanite gate and a massive foundation of a tower were discovered alongside with a casemate wall around.
A temple was found in Gezer, dated to the Canaanite period. it was probably a High place that mentioned in the Bible as a place of worship.
It is still debated but many agreed that Gezer was the largest city in the area, and it is assumed that other cities in the area were represented in this temple therefore there are 10 Megalithic stones - maatzevot or Astelot.
It was mentioned on the temple of Karnak as one of 119 cities that captured by Pharaoh Thutmose the 3 (15 century b.c).
It is mentioned in the bible as one of the cities that Joshua and children of israel captured in the promised land.
It is also mentioned in 1 kings 15 - Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it with fire, and had killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and had given it as dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife.
According to 1 Kings 15, we know that king Solomon rebuilt the city of Gezer.
The gate of the Israelite city was found in Gezer and the same type of gate was found in Meggido and Hazor, dated to the same era.
An inscription written in ancient Hebrew was found in Gezer, dated to the 10th century. For many years it was considered as the most ancient discovery found in Israel that bears an inscription in Hebrew letters.
Scholars believe that it was an exercise of an elementary school boy that wanted to write the agricultural seasons and the months. It could be also a tablet associated with collecting the taxes from the farmers. In any event the name of the inscription is Gezer calendar tablet.
Beit Shearim - Menorah Caves Complex
The tombs caves of Beit Shearim contain the largest concentration of tombs in Israel from the Late Roman period. The place initially served the local population and later also the Jews from the Diaspora.
in the Menorah caves complex, six burial caves were found, including dozens of reliefs of the Menorah with its seven branches which originally was in the temple.

Caesarea: Israel's Hidden Roman Gem Revealed from Gladiators to sailors of Rome 🇮🇱
Caesarea national park is on the Mediterranean coast, located between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Ancient Caesarea Maritima was built by King Herod.
In Jerusalem, Herod needed to be (somewhat) sensitive to traditional Jewish sensibilities, which is perhaps why he rebuilt the Holy Temple there.
Not so in the (largely non-Jewish) coastal area. In 22 BCE, Herod began building a new Roman port city on the ruins of a small fishing village. Within a short time, Caesarea was one of the most impressive cities in the world: With its deep-sea access, the Sebastos Harbor was the world’s largest artificial harbor. The city boasted wide roads, temples to the Roman gods, a large Roman theater, horse racing, and gladiator fights. Indeed, Herod inaugurated his new city here in 10 BCE with sports events that rivaled the Olympics. At its peak, Caesarea was the largest city in the country, with a population of approximately 125,000 people.
