BAR - Montenegro Travel Guide | Around The World
Bar is a coastal town and seaport in southern Montenegro. It is the capital of the Bar Municipality and a center for tourism. According to the 2011 census, the city proper had 17,727 inhabitants, while the total population of Bar Municipality was 40,037.
Although there are some nice stony beaches in Bar itself, many tourists choose destinations in other small towns in the Bar municipality, notably Sutomore, with its beautiful long sandy beach. The natural area around Bar is mostly untouched and is rich in vegetation. The Bar municipality stretches to the southern shore of Skadar lake and encompasses Krajina region. This entire area is suitable for leisure activities and hiking. Smaller settlements near Bar, such as Dobra Voda, Sutomore and Čanj, are a favourite destination for sunbathing, as they incorporate long sandy beaches.
Places of interest
The Old Olive of Mirovica is said to be one of the oldest olive trees in Europe and one of the oldest trees in the world.[citation needed] In 1957, it was placed under state protection. Numerous legends and traditions are associated with the tree. For instance, families that had a dispute would come to the tree to make peace. This explains its name, Mirovica, mir meaning peace.
King Nikola’s palace was built in 1885. It was a present from King Nikola to his daughter Princess Zorka and his son-in-law, Prince Petar Karađorđević. The construction included a large palace, a little palace, a chapel, guardhouses and a winter garden. In 1910, a spacious ballroom was added. A botanic garden has Mediterranean vegetation including a cork tree. There is also a large flower garden in a stainless steel structure of interesting shape. it was a gift from King Emmanuel of Italy to King Nikola. It is now a restaurant called Knjaževa bašta (The Duke’s Garden). At the front of the palace, there was a wooden pier. Between 1866 and 1916, King Nikola owned ten yachts. One of them, Sibil, was bought from Jules Verne, the novelist. The last yacht bought was the Rumija. In 1915, it was sunk in the Bar harbour by the Austro-Hungarian navy. The palace complex houses the Bar city museum. It is also used as a venue for festivals, concerts, exhibitions and literary events.
Mount Rumija Fortress
Nehaj Fortress, partially preserved, is located near the small seaside town of Sutomore. It has been held by both Venetians and Ottoman Turks. It was first recorded as the 16th century Fortezza dei Spizi, a Venetian fortified town.
Bar old town.
The Bar Aqueduct was constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Beaches :
The Bar municipality has over 44 kilometres (27 miles) of sea coast. There are twenty beaches stretching over 9 kilometres (6 miles). In the north is Čanj, which has a 1,100-metre (3,600-foot) sandy beach. A boat takes tourists from Čanj to the Kraljičina Plaža. It lies below a natural wall of sedimentary rock. Further south is 300-metre-long (980-foot) Maljevik Beach. The beach at Sutomore, 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) long, has entertainments, activities and restaurants. Near the medieval monastery complex of Ratac is Crvena Plaža, named after the colour of its fine sand. The beach is surrounded by a pine forest and located about a hundred m from the main road to Bar. Just north of the Bar central business district is the 1,200-metre-long (3,900-foot)Žukotrlica Beach. It is a gravel beach, surrounded by a pine forest and varied Mediterranean vegetation. The Bar Gradska Plaža is located in front of King Nikola's palace. It is 750 metres (2,460 feet) long, part pebble and part sand. 10 kilometres (6 miles) south of central Bar is the 380-metre-long (1,250-foot) Veliki Pijesak. It is surrounded by numerous tourist facilities, restaurants and discothèques. On the border of the Bar and Ulcinj municipalities, in the village of Bušat, is the Val Maslina with its nearby olive groves. There are also beaches on the shore of Lake Skadar including the sandy Murici village beach and Pjesacac.
Bar has a ferry line to Bari, Italy which is operated by Montenegro Lines. In season, ferries also go to Ancona, Italy. Bar is well connected with inland Montenegro, as well as with the rest of the Montenegrin coast. The Sozina tunnel, completed in 2006, shortened the road connection with Podgorica to around 50 km (31 mi). Bar is connected to other coastal towns by the Adriatic motorway, which extends from Ulcinj to Herceg Novi, and on to Croatia. Bar is also the final station of the Belgrade - Bar railway, which connects Bar with Podgorica, northern Montenegro and Serbia. Podgorica Airport is about 40 km (25 mi) from Bar. There are regular flights to Belgrade, Budapest, Zürich, Frankfurt, Ljubljana, Paris, Rome and Vienna.

Number 7.LAKE SKADAR
Lake Skadar
A large freshwater lake, Lake Skadar is just 30 minutes south of Podgorica by car. The dolphin-shaped rock is said to have been made from the tears of a crying pixie. Its enchanting beauty fits the magical name. The lake is in a national park with lots of wildlife and beautiful places to take pictures.
Number 6. DAJBABE MONASTERY
Dajbabe Monastery
The Dajbabe Monastery is an active cloister that was first built in the late 1800s. The small stone building with a portico is surrounded by peaceful gardens with olive and cypress trees from the area. The founder of the monastery painted religious frescoes on the walls of an Orthodox church that is hidden in a cave under the monastery. Frescoes of prophets, religious figures, and local saints cover the whole cave, following the natural shape of the stone.
Number 5.WATERFALL NIAGARA PODGORICA
Waterfall Niagara Podgorica
Just outside of the city of Podgorica is a beautiful set of waterfalls called Niagara Podgorica. A big waterfall falls over a dam, and around it are a lot of smaller falls that have strange shapes because the limestone rock has been worn away. The best views are from the boulders, which make a narrow crevasse right in front of the falls. It's a very quiet place, surrounded by farms and a vast landscape of vineyards that grow grapes for Vranac, a type of red wine.
Number 4.PODGORICA CLOCK TOWER
Podgorica clock tower
Even though Podgorica was bombed a lot during the Second World War, the clock tower there is still standing tall. It's one of the few things left from the Ottoman Empire, so it stands out against the city's modern buildings in an interesting way. It is 16 metres tall and is a good place to meet for a drink in the afternoon. The famous building is a great example of Islamic architecture. It is in the middle of the busy Old Town.
Number 3.INDEPENDENCE SQUARE
Independence Square
Independence Square is one of the busiest places in Podgorica. It's also the centre of the city's arts scene, since the National Library and Al Galerija art gallery are right next to it. In the middle of the square is a sparkling fountain surrounded by palm trees and benches. People like to shop on both Vuedolska Street in the south and Slobode Street in the east. At night, Independence Square is lit up with bright colours, and people hang out in the bars and cafes nearby.
Number 2. OLD RIBNICA RIVER BRIDGE
Old Ribnica River Bridge
The crown jewel of Podgorica and the Ribnica River is the Old Ribnica River Bridge. The river flows through the northern part of the old town, which has more trees. From Park Forest Gorica, the city's biggest park, you can take a nice walk down to the Ribnica and along its tree-lined banks. Before you get to the monument to King Nikola, you will wind your way through King's Park and hear the birds singing. Along the way, you'll reach the old bridge at some point. The old Roman Bridge crosses the Ribnica where it meets the Moraca, which is its bigger brother.
Number 1. NJEGOSEV PARK
Njegošev Park`
If you wonder what to do in Podgorica, you definitely have to visit Njegošev Park. .You can enjoy the peace and quiet of Podgorica in the early morning at Njegoev Park, which looks out over the Moraca River. The peaceful park is between the three main river crossings in Podgorica. This makes it a good place to start exploring the city. Walk through the pine trees to the cafe in the middle of the park, where locals are getting strong coffee. It will give you the energy to see the rest of the city.

Wander through the remains of churches, mosques, and fortresses while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

At this time, we visited another city in Montenegro; Bar. Everyone is talking about Kotor, Budva when they heard about Montenegro, but often missing other towns around. Bar city offers beautiful pebble beaches, stunning sunset views, and the famous the Old Town of Bar or often called Stari Bar by the locals.
Travel to Montenegro is incomplete without visiting this city. I would suggest people visit Bar when travelling in Montenegro. Visit the King Nikola Palace and the grand St. Jovan Vladimir church located in the city centre.

City of Bar - Stari Bar - Montenegro
At the southern edge of Montenegro lies the picturesque city of Bar. With rolling mountains, warm waters and a bustling cityscape, it’s a hugely popular destination for yachters from around the world. For thousands of years, people have been drawn to the intoxicating beauty of Bar’s countryside. The city’s chic, contemporary looks belie a much longer history, rich with romance and excitement. The blend of tradition modernity within the Port of Bar’s city limits make it a huge tourist destination and hub for coastal expeditions. Besides being an important port, Bar is also the final station on the Belgrade-Bar railroad.
Southeast of the city, Stari Bar (Old Town – Old Bar) elevates itself some four kilometers inland from the coast at the foot of Mount Rumija (1.594 m) and at an altitude of 110 m. Just arriving in Old Bar gives you a sense of the old times, with many coloured houses at the foot of the site, decorated with the most amazing colours. It’s a colourful mish-mash of restaurants and souvenir shops that showcases the Turkish influence that 300 years of Ottoman rule had on the area. The cobbled street that leads to the Old town is one of prettiest streets in Montenegro. The Old Town of Bar also known as a Montenegrin Pompeii is the largest urban agglomeration among the ruins in Montenegro.
