The Aizhai Bridge (Chinese: 矮寨大桥) is a suspension bridge on the G65 Baotou–Maoming Expressway near Jishou, Hunan, China. The bridge was built as part of an expressway from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Changsha.
The bridge is famous for the spectacular view it offers those crossing it.
With a main span of 1,146 metres (3,760 ft) and a deck height of 336 metres (1,102 ft),[4] as of 2013, it is the thirteenth-highest bridge in the world and the world's nineteenth-longest suspension bridge. Of the world's 400 or so highest bridges, none has a main span as long as Aizhai.[5] It is also the world's highest and longest tunnel-to-tunnel bridge.[6] The bridge contains 1888 lights to increase visibility at night.[7]
Construction on the Aizhai Bridge began in October 2007 and was completed by the end of 2011, ahead of schedule.[8][9] The bridge was temporarily opened to pedestrians during the 2012 Spring Festival[9] and was formally opened to traffic in March 2012.[10]
The bridge was built with the assistance of a $208 million loan from the Asian Development Bank; the total project cost was $610 million, which included 64 kilometres (40 mi) of expressway construction (two thirds of which comprised bridge and tunnel) and upgrades to 129 kilometres (80 mi) of local roads.[11] The bridge and the associated road construction were projected to reduce the travel time between Jishou and Chadong from 4 hours to less than 1 hour.[11][12]

Today we got up at 5am to watch the sunrise in the grasslands... although the sun didn't end up showing until 6:45! But when it did come, the colours were really beautiful, and it was also nice to be up so early in the chilly weather (we could see our breath!). We spent the morning (and some of the afternoon) on the bus, driving to the Resonant Sand Gorge. While we were on the bus, it was quite rainy outside, but luckily it stopped before we arrived (also, I was pretty sure it wasn't supposed to rain too much in the desert...). After taking the cable car up to the Resonant Sand Gorge, everyone rented these sand socks (pretty sexy), which stop the sand from getting into your shoes and on your pants. At least with everyone wearing them, you don't feel like such a doofus! We had an hour of camel riding to see the desert a bit- we were in a string of about 5 camels, tied hump to nose (I actually felt a little bad for them), being led around the desert by guides wearing suits (It was kind of weird!). We passed some sand sculptures, including a giant sand castle, and even the Olympic torch and mascots, which seem to be everywhere in China right now. The desert scenery was really pretty, and it was neat to go from mountains to grassland to desert so quickly. After the camel ride, we did this sand slide thing, where you shoot down the huge steep hill on a rickety wooden toboggan-esque creation. It was really fun, but takes about 10 seconds to get down and 10 minutes to climb back up! After dinner that night, there was another dancing performance outside around a fire. This time, the guys and girls were in grass skirts, and either topless or with flower bras (I was wearing a long sleeve shirt, a sweater and a vest... it was cold!). They had some neat fire-blowing and acrobatics type stuff, and again invited everyone to dance at the end. So overall it was a fun day!
