Iran | Amazing ancient Mud City of Bam

A truly wonderful destination to visit!

Kerman is one of the oldest cities in Iran. It is well-known for its strong cultural heritage and for its thriving hand-woven Persian carpet industry. Kerman city lies on a sandy plain, 1,750 metres above sea level, under barren rocky hills. Surrounded by mountains on the north and east, it has a cool climate and has frequent sandstorms in the autumn and spring.

The 220 km drive from Kerman to the ancient fortified settlement of Bam is in itself a wonder, as you drive through amazing landscapes of valleys, desert and mountains that will remain in your heart forever!

For centuries, this mud city had a strategic location on the Silk Roads connecting it to Central Asia in the east, the Persian Gulf in the south, as well as Egypt in the west and was a perfect example of a cultural crossroad

A huge 6.6 earthquake occurred in Kerman Province the 26th December 2003. Bam was heavily impacted

The effects of the earthquake and damage was exacerbated by the fact that the city chiefly consisted of mud brick buildings, many of which did not comply with earthquake regulations set in Iran in 1989, and that most of the city's people were indoors and asleep.

Since then Bam is in recovery.

Iran/Kerman (Bam: Ancient city after earthquake ) Part 32

Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Bam, Iran
Bam is located in South-eastern corner Kerman province. Maintaining its position in the middle of the Southern trade route, this small-fortified city on the outskirts of the vast Dasht-i-L.t desert is just 350km west of the modern day Pakistan and 450km north of the Persian Gulf. Whether you are heading in either direction, Bam is an ideal place to stop for rest.
ANCIENT BAM
Located in southeastern Iran, 200 kilometers south of Kerman, the ancient city of Arg-e-Bam is made entirely of mud bricks, clay, straw and the trunks of palm trees. The city was originally founded during the Sassanian period (224-637 AD) and while some of the surviving structures date from before the 12th century, most of what remains was built during the Safavid period (1502-1722). During Safavid times, the city occupied six square kilometers, was surrounded by a rampart with 38 towers, and had between 9000 and 13,000 inhabitants. Bam prospered because of pilgrims visiting its Zoroastrian fire temple (dating to early Sassanian times) and as a commercial and trading center on the famous Silk Road. Upon the site of the Zoroastrian temple the Jame Mosque was built during the Saffarian period (866-903 AD) and adjacent to this mosque is the tomb of Mirza Naiim, a mystic and astronomer who lived three hundred years ago. Bam declined in importance following an invasion by Afghans in 1722 and another by invaders from the region of Shiraz in 1810. The city was used as a barracks for the army until 1932 and then completely abandoned. Intensive restoration work began in 1953 and continued till the earthquake.
Ancient Bam, or the Arg-i-Bam, at its peak of political, economic, and military power had some 11,000 citizens living in 400 houses within its city walls, which still stand much the way they did hundreds of years ago. Since the city's inception, judged to be between 250 BC . 224 AD, Bam has thrived as an energetic market place and a focal point for the region. It was not until a devastating. When you strolled through front gates, you came face to face with ancient Bam. Houses, schools, mosques, gymnasiums, and bathhouses stand in the same places they did centuries ago. These structures maintained their allure, and they had the rare ability to give visitors a most inspiring adrenaline rush at first sight. Mud and sand stone buildings held much of their original shape.

The museum garden is the first Miniature park of Iran that has been designed and carried out in an area of about three hectares in Tehran in order to present models of the Iran world Heritage sites by Tehran municipality (organization of Parks and landscape of Tehran city). The main plan is derived from the Iranian garden (Persian garden) essence in combination with irregular spaces to present miniature models with regards to the geo-graphic bed and the manner of the World Heritage monuments establishment. The significant difference of this Park with the others is the close attention to the World Heritage complexes in association with their surrounding environment which has presented a special essence to it. The Silk Road Stronghold: Unveiling Bam Citadel's History

Bam Citadel, or Arg-e Bam, is a historical adobe fortress in Iran's Kerman province, renowned for being the largest structure of its kind in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site, with roots tracing back to the Achaemenid era, once thrived as a strategic military and trade center along the Silk Road. Despite the devastation of a 2003 earthquake, ongoing restoration efforts strive to preserve its architectural brilliance and rich cultural legacy, offering visitors breathtaking views and a glimpse into ancient Persian life.

Where The Limitless Sky Meets The Desert Lands Of Iran

Those who travel to Iran for the first time talk about the diversity of the country, both in natural and historical terms. “Iran is a vast country,” they say to their friends, “where you can see epic desertscape, lush forests, charming beaches, and tall glorious mountains.” To know if that’s true, we recommend traveling to a unique area. Kerman province shows off the beauty of the diversity of Iran. The city of historical adobe citadels offers a lot in various forms: the mysterious Shahdad Kalouts, the verdant Shazdeh Garden, the lively village of Meymand, or the majestic Bam Citadel are among the top Kerman attractions.
