Tropical North Queensland Destination Spotlight: Atherton Tablelands
Tropical North Queensland has some incredible local produce - join Matty J's foodie trail, as we taste our way through the Atherton Tablelands and even make time for a sunrise balloon ride!
Drive Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands
It may come as a surprise that one area can encompass Wet Tropics Rainforest, volcanic crater lakes and historic villages, but you can see all of this and more in the Atherton Tablelands. There are several routes to access the tablelands, however if you wish to add visiting a Spanish castle and exploring the rainforest canopy to your trip, you’ll need to head from Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands via Paronella Park and the Palmerston Highway.
Live out your childhood fairytale dream with a 1.5 hour trip south to Paronella Park, a Spanish castle amidst the lush rainforest. Take your rainforest adventure higher at Mamu Tropical Skywalk and wander amongst the tree tops on raised boardwalks. Continue to climb to higher altitudes as you drive along the stunning Palmerston Highway, which has a number of waterfall walks that are well worth pulling over for. Celebrate your arrival on the tablelands with a fuel-up at Mungali Creek Dairy, which serves up biodynamic dairy products and locally sourced organic produce by the plate.
Once you’ve satisfied your appetite, satisfy your hunger for nature by driving along the iconic waterfall circuit, stopping at each of its residents for a swim. Make way from Millaa Millaa to Historic Village Herberton for a spot of time travelling. Jump into a volcanic crater lake at Lake Eacham or simply gaze at one whilst you tuck into a Devonshire Tea at Lake Barrine. If you are craving more volcanoes, stay at Mt Quincan Crater Retreat, a private slice of paradise on the slopes of an extinct volcano.

Atherton Tablelands is a totally different world from the coastal towns of Far North Queensland like Cape Tribulation or Cairns or Townsville. Waterfalls, swimming holes, lakes rivers, streams and rainforests make this area worth visiting and one day is not enough for Atherton Tablelands.
Chasing waterfalls, hiking up to Walshs pyramid or just swimming in a crater lake, this place has something for everyone! I spent 2 days in Atherton Tablelands, Queensland to explore the different regions and see the variety of places there are.
We drove around on our own pace but there are plenty of Atherton tableland day trips that can take you to this epic place. I have ranked the places I visiting from 1-8 (best to least favourite) and I am sure this Cairns Travel Vlog will help you decided which place was a hit and which was a miss:
1. Josephine Falls
2. Milla Milla Falls (Waterfall Circuit)
3. Lake Eacham
4. Walshs Pyramid
5. Curtain Fig Tree
6. Lake Barrine
7. Devil's Pool
8. Babinda Boulders
Cairns tourism is getting back on track and these places will definitelt get busier than they are right now so while they are quite, take out some time and pay a visit. Atherton Tablelands is one of the best day trips from Cairns.
Most people come here for the Atherton Tablelands Waterfall Circuit but they miss out on so many beautiful places nestled in this region.

Ravenshoe - Atherton Tablelands
Ravenshoe
Queensland’s highest town, Ravenshoe is 920 metres above sea level and is home to Windy Hill wind farm which generates enough electricity to supply approximately 3,500 homes. Created on the extinct Windy Hill volcano in 2000 and its 20 wind turbines take advantage of the consistent winds on the volcano’s slopes.
The Ravenshoe Visitor Centre at 24 Moore Street provides first class tourist information and has excellent displays on the rainforest, timber-milling, dairy farming and WWII military presence in the area, plus a section on bats and a noctarium which simulates night spotting of local native animals. The Centre is also the home of the Nganyaji Interpretive Centre which showcases the culture and lifestyle of the region’s Jirrbal people whose language is the world’s oldest spoken language. On Sundays the historic steam train “Capella” runs to Tumoulin, Queensland’s highest railway station.
Ravenshoe is the highest point in the Misty Mountains walking tracks network, and is a great location for wildlife watching, particularly for platypus, 12 species of possums and 340 bird species and of course, Lumholtz’s Tree- Kangaroo, one of 14 species of kangaroo to be found in the area.

Lake Eacham on the Atherton Tablelands in Tropical Far North Queensland
When you are in the Tropical Far North Queensland be sure to visit Lake Eacham on the Atherton Tablelands and take a stroll around the beautiful lake and witness the magical beauty of the Crater Lake and the Rainforest that surrounds it.
Surrounded by dense rainforest, this former volcanic crater has an average depth of 65 metres. It’s an enclosed catchment, isolated from any other waterways and thus only fills with rain, making the lake crystal clear and water quality good enough to snorkel and dive in, in addition to being perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding.

I SAW A PLATYPUS! It's the first one I have ever seen and I was mildly excited! I spent a few days in the Atherton Tablelands which were lovely despite some average weather. Definitely a place I will visit again. Hopefully on the bike. The roads are amazing! Watch to the end for a bonus amazing animal sighting!
