What Can $10 Get in ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan?
How are prices in your city, in your country? Let me know in comments!
Welcome to Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Erbil is known for its modern, expensive-looking buildings and is considered an expensive city by locals.
What is the reality? Will my 8 month stay here ruin my wallet or no?
Let’s find out what can you do with 10 DOLLARS!
Erbil has 1.5 million inhabitants and is actually one of the oldest cities in the world. The local citadel has a documented history of more than 6,000 years! Near this citadel is the traditional, iconic Grand Bazaar. Where better to buy things than there? Let's head there!
We can either take a taxi, which costs about 4,000 Iraqi dinars, roughly 3 USD. But, I’ll take a bus, which is just 750 dinars, about half a dollar!
So lets catch a bus! The journey took about twenty minutes, and was for 750 Iraqi Dinars.
Speaking of Iraqi Dinars, let’s look at the currency.
The currency look changed After the downfall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, back then his image was featured on the banknotes.
Interesting is also this old banknote with al-Khwarizmi, the inventor of algebra.
Now, on the current banknotes, you can find there places from all over Iraq. And the old notes can still be bought as a souvenir at the bazaar.
The banknotes reach from 250 to 50 000, but I can’t show you the highest one because I am too poor to have it
The currency is influenced by inflation, therefore we need about 14 thousand to have 10 US Dollars.
So, here we are. Grand Bazaar.
Its starting to be very hot in Erbil, the temperatures are reaching up to 50 C in summer! What else to buy than delicious pistachious ice cream ?
It costed just 1 500 Dinars.
Okay, let’s move on. There is one think noone visiting Iraq escapes: tea.
Usually is very cheap, about 250, however for this one I paid one thousand. It’s in the famous cafe in the city center after all.
What I really like about my stay here, is the quality and price for nuts. Pistachious, cashew, these are so expensive in Europe. Here, I paid for a mix of pistachious, peanuts and cashew 5k for half a kilo!
Of course, as a typical tourist, I got lured in to a tourist trap and bought this souvernir with Kurdish flag, with a shape of Kurdistan, for 2k.
On the way, in bazaar, I was invited for some sweets in this amazing sweets shop, Damascus sweets! I managed to get some sweets for free – it’s actually quite frequent, locals are so friendly towards foreigners and trying to make them feel welcomed and help in any situation
Then I also bought some other sweets to the way. Middle Eastern sweets are just legendary!
If my stay in Erbil tought me something – there is never enough food.
On my way back, I stopped for a falafel bread. Just for 1k!
Bread is actually on every corner. I will need some for tomorrow, so I’ll head to my favorite bakery.
It’s just 250 for two pieces!
Tomorrow, I leave to a trip to mountains, so I need to buy a pack of water bottles. Just for 1k!
So, for 10 Dollars, we bought a bus ticket, icecream, tea, half a kilo of nuts, souvenir, sweets, falafel, pack of water bottles and a bread. It’s pretty good, no?

ERBIL - IRAQ'S SUCCESS STORY! - Discover the Kurdistan Capital (Cultural Travel Guide)
Looking for a positive story about Iraq? Well, you’ve found one - Erbil is a dynamic city that has fast risen to become the business hub for Iraq. The capital of Kurdistan is one of the oldest cities in the world and for years extended little further than the famous citadel. Now its high rise suburbs stretch out in all directions and construction cranes dominate the skyline.
However, the modern shopping malls cropping up in the newer districts will never have the sights, sounds, and smells of the Qyesariyeh bazaar, which draws you from the square like a magnet. It’s the oldest in Erbil and a veritable rabbit warren. I never could find the tea house hiding in the centre, but I didn’t mind getting lost, especially when there were so many sweet temptations around every corner. Until the citadel reopens, this area is the focus for tourism in the city. A visit to the teahouse at the foot of the citadel is a must.
Erbil in the evening is bustling and very safe, but if you want to find some peace then I recommend Minaret park. The 1000 year old minaret may have partly fallen but Erbil’s population continues its rapid ascent. The metro area population is now approaching 1 million inhabitants and there are lots of new apartments to fill. In the film, Brusk Ako of Kurdistan Expeditions explains where the new residents are coming from.

Top 10 Amazing Places In Iraq 2022
When you think of Iraq you may well think of smoky battlefields, cruise missiles, and charging tanks. Years of conflict have besieged this country, and while Iraq continues to struggle with political strife, there is much to see here other than just the scars of war. This country is one that is covered in natural beauty, such as the winding waterways of the mighty Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It is often known as the Cradle of Civilization, and this is a reference to its ancient Mesopotamian cities that are famed for their innovations in science, writing, literature, medicine, theology, and law.So, watch the video till the end let us know your thoughts in the comments. Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan ➖ After meeting up with @worldnomac and @YadVenturess last night, it was time to embark on our first road trip here in Kurdistan. We made out way over to Sulaymaniyah, which is actually where Yad grew up, but hadn't visited in over 17 years.
It was a short 2-hour drive through the beautiful mountains and landscape that Kurdistan has to offer, we also stopped for a cheeky kebab right on the Lake. But that didn't stop us from stuffing our faces full of the street food that Sulaymaniyah has to offer!

SLEMANI/SULAYMANIYAH - Discover Kurdistan's Capital of Culture (Travel Guide) سلێمانی #kurdistan
Known throughout Kurdistan for its historical and cultural importance, Sulaymaniyah السليمانية (Slemani in Kurdish) is a great city for visitors to learn more about the Kurds, from their battles with Saddam to to their love of poetry. It's also a city that has witnessed enormous population growth in recent decades and boasts two thriving universities.
The city was founded by the Kurdish prince Ibrahim Pasha Baban who named it after his father Sulaiman Pasha. When the ottoman empire collapsed in 1820 the city became the capital of the short-lived kingdom of Kurdistan. Culturally it has always had strong links with persia and many Iranians visit the city to this day.
The city was always a point of resistance to the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein, which meant that it was heavily controlled. The extent of the repression is plain to see at the Red House.
Built to an East German design the building specialised in torture throughout the 80s and early 90s. The slightest hint of support for Kurdish separatism could land you in the notorious prison. The uprising in 1991 finally put an end to the horrors. Tanks left behind by the Baathist regime now stand rusting outside the bullet ridden building which has been turned into the national museum in order not to forget. At the entrance to the museum visitors walk through a corridor lined with mirror tiles to represent the people lost to Saddam’s campaign of genocide against the Kurds. 4,500 light bulbs represent each village lost to the campaign known as Al Anfal. More recently the Kurds have had to fight off the terrorist group ISIS and the museum also documents that fight and commemorates the bravery of every peshmurga fighter that was lost in battle. This is a museum that hits you hard. The attacks on the Kurdish people by Saddam Hussein and by ISIS must not be forgotten.
One of the city’s best loved poets is Nali. Through his writings he brought about a renaissance of the Kurdish language. He was an enlightened Kurdish patriot and campaigned for independence from both ottoman and Iranian control. Actions that inevitably forced him to flee. From his exile he remembered Sulaymaniya and Kurdistan in one of his most famous poems:
“Explaining the pain of exile, this burning fire of separation inside melts my heart, slowly dripping. Tell me has the day for my return now come or must I remain in this place forever?”
The busy activity of Suli’s bazaar has probably changed little since Nali’s time. It’s considered to be the largest in Kurdistan and is the beating heart of the city.
