Kottayam, situated in the Indian state of Kerala, serves as the administrative capital of Kottayam district and is located in central Kerala. The city boasts of unique characteristics, bordered by the Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of Kuttanad on the west. The region is known for its panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands, hills and hillocks, extensive rubber plantations, and places associated with many legends. The people of Kottayam District are entirely literate, earning the enviable title of The land of letters, legends, latex and lakes.
Kottayam is a significant trading center for spices and commercial crops, particularly rubber. The Rubber Board, responsible for most of India's natural rubber, is located in Kottayam. The city is also known as Akshara Nagari, meaning the city of letters, due to its contribution to print media and literature.
Kottayam Town holds the distinction of being the first town in India to achieve 100% literacy, a remarkable feat accomplished in 1989. The Old Seminary in Kottayam served as the starting point for English education in South India in 1813. The first printing press in Kerala, CMS Press, was established in Kottayam in 1821 by Rev. Benjamin Baily. The first college in the state, CMS College, was also founded in Kottayam in 1840. The maiden printed Malayalam-English and English-Malayalam Dictionaries were published from Kottayam in 1846 and 1847, respectively.
Kottayam is home to the first and only Cooperative Society of writers, authors, and publishers (SPCS) for publishing books and periodicals, established in 1945. The city is the center of publishing business in the state and is renowned for its vast number of books and periodicals. Kottayam was the first town in India selected by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, to be transformed into an Eco City. The former President of India, Sri K R Narayanan, hails from Kottayam District.
Kottayam serves as an optimal departure point for excursions to Peermade, Munnar, Thekkady, Ernakulam, and the revered temple city of Madurai. Additionally, it serves as a gateway to various pilgrimage destinations such as Sabarimala, Mannanam, Vaikom, Ettumanoor, Bharananganam, Erumeli, Manarcaud, and others.
