--About my Cooperation with G Adventures—
A massive thanks goes out to my Sponsor G Adventures who helped me to pull this off and who were absolute legends in organizing this awesome „Cuba Libre“ tour.

For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

Cuba Tourism 2022-23: What's New and Travel Tips

I obtained this presentation from the Cuban Ministry of Tourism in Toronto. I made a few small edits, and present it with my own take on how Cuba has evolved its tourism over recent years, including the Covid period and the post-Covid recovery.

Cuba has used the 2020-22 lull in tourism due to Covid to: expand its hotel rooms, improve hotel buildings, install wifi, and sometimes include it in rooms.

Regarding money in Cuba, the CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) is no longer in use, and most tourists will use Canadian dollars, Euros, and other international currencies to pay for meals and accommodation. US dollars are generally not accepted except for barter on the street to buy Cuban Pesos (National money, not CUC), although some casas and private restaurants may accept US$. Credit card use is more common now, but only non-US bank credit cards can be used due to the US embargo. There is also a new Cuban debit card that you can buy at a bank. The new Cuban debit cards can be purchased for a fee of 5 USD and come loaded in denominations of 200, 500 & 1,000 USD.

We run bicycle tours in Cuba so my emphasis is on how tourism is making Cuba a great bike tour destination. I explain our routes and the geography of Cuba at points when the slides cover the geography and tourism destinations.

Feel free to post any questions or comments and I'll do my best to respond. No political dogma though - that will be deleted.

Best wishes.

FULL TOUR - Driving through ARTEMISA CUBA on route to ANGERONA coffee plantation 2017

Artemisa Province is one of the two new provinces created from the former La Habana Province, whose creation was approved by the Cuban National Assembly on August 1, 2010, the other being Mayabeque Province.[3][4][5] The new provinces came into existence on January 1, 2011.

Angerona emerged during the first half of the nineteenth century under the management of German landowner Cornelio Souchay and his Haitian concubine, Ursula Lambert. Souchay set into place a peculiar organization of slave labor that was very different to the one that reigned in the rest of Cuba at the time. According to several accounts, the plantation included a main house (now in ruins), the mayoral house (restored a few years ago), a system of reservoirs for the storage and supply of water, the quarters for slaves, a guard tower, and the statue of goddess Angerona, conserved at the Municipal Museum of Artemisia. It has an area of 642.0 square kilometers and a population of over 85,000 inhabitants (2017).

Due to its coffee crops in the past and the bucolic local landscape, it has received the nickname Jardín de Cuba (Garden of Cuba) and is also known as the Villa Roja (Red Village) due to the color of its soils.
The town was founded in 1818. It arose as a result of a fire that occurred on April 25, 1802, in the Jesús María and Guadalupe neighborhoods in the city of Havana, which left many families homeless and pressured the Royal Consulate of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce to approve the creation of populations in extramural areas. In 1818, thanks to the donation of Don Francisco de Arango y Peñalver, the construction of the church began, which was inaugurated on December 22, 1825. The origin of the name of Artemisa is uncertain. It has been argued to have originated from the Greek goddess Artemis (Diana, in the Roman version) or that it refers to the name of Ragweed in Spanish, Artemisia (Ambrosia artemisifolia), abundant at the time.

From an architectural point of view, the house illustrates neoclassical construction, with an austerity of space appropriate to the environmental and climatic characteristics of the place, as well as large doors and other elements from the Hispanic tradition, such as railings and grills.

This was the most important coffee plantation in western Cuba and the second largest operation on the island during the first half of the nineteenth century. Souchay owned about 450 slaves, an extraordinary number for a single plantation. The ruins of Angerona serve as one of the most complete and authentic representations of a nineteenth-century Cuban coffee plantation today. For the particularities of its proprietors and the treatment of enslaved people who lived and worked there, this place embodies the pro-slavery society that created it. In fact, it is here that it reached its pinnacle.
