Best places to visit in Tamil Nadu | Karaikudi Travel Guide - TAMIL NADU TOURISM
Aayiram Jannal Veedu is a famous landmark in the town of Karaikudi. The literal translation of the name of the place means the house with a thousand windows; a very apt name for a house that has a thousand windows! The house is very popular among tourists who make it a point to visit the place when in Karaikudi. In fact, once in the town, simply ask anyone for directions to the house. Built in 1941 on 20,000 square feet of area, the house is very spacious and cost one lakh 25 thousand at the time, a meagre sum of money now. The house has 25 huge rooms and five very large halls. There are some 20 doors in the house, along with 1000 windows. The first thing that strikes one when one enters the house is that the original style of architecture and grandeur still remain intact.

Must Visit Places in Karaikudi | Chettinad Palace - TAMIL NADU TOURISM
Kanadukathan is a small town located in the district of Sivaganga and is very close to the town of Karaikudi. The specialty of the place lies in the structure of its houses and the local food. The houses in Kanadukathan are huge and built in the typical Chettinad style. The main doors and entrances of the houses resemble the gateways of the Hindu temples; they are majestic and intricately carved. The local cuisine of Kanadukathan is prepared in the typical Chettinad style with plenty of herbs and spices. Plenty of tourists throng the town from Karaikudi to simply feast on the local delicacies. A very common feature that is seen on the streets of Kanadukathan—potholes are covered with wire mesh. These potholes have been built for rainwater harvesting. The town uses special water purifying techniques to make rainwater usable. All the towns and cities in the country could learn a thing or two from the people of Kanadukathan about water harvesting.

A small sized fort. You can spend somewhere close to an hour or two here. Small sized parking space good enough for 5 to 6 cars. Parking is free, entrance charge is 25 rupees for Indians and 300 for foreigners. Watch out for monkeys in the fort. They steal/snatch food from people's hands. Toilet is available and seems hygienic. There aren't boulders or rails everywhere so parents who bring children need to be careful. Best to visit during sunset as it might get too hot. Steps are vertically inclined so senior citizens might not be able to climb easily.

The Koviloor temple of Sri Kotravaleeswarar was initially built by the Pandiya King Veerasekara Pandiyan – approximately thousand years ago. Legend says that once when King Veerasekaran was on his hunting at this place, he lost his sword and later recovered it. The temple was raised for the lord who helped recover the same. And hence the name Kotrai vaal eeswaran Temple.

The palatial decorated homes of Chettiars in the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu are symbols of a colonial-era architectural heritage marked by opulence. The stately mansions of Nattukottai Chettiars of the Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu are a statement of the affluence the mercantile community enjoyed at the height of its prosperity during the British Raj.
