Hubli is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka along with its twin city Dharwad. Hubli also called as Hubballi the name comes from the term Hoovina Balli which means ‘Flowering Creeper’ in Kannada. The second biggest city in the state by population and the biggest city in North Karnataka.

This past town was called as Raya Hubli also as Elaya Puravada Halli during the ancient times. This city transmogrify into an important commercial centre of trade in cotton and iron during the reign of the Vijaynagara empire.

The city is noteworthy for its handloom textile units and has numerous number of cotton and processing mills. Cotton, groundnuts and peanuts for the Americans, they are grown in a lot from the surroundings of rural areas. Hubli serves major trading centre for both commodities. It’s an important city for Indian Railways, being the headquarters for South Western Railway Zone and the Hubli Division.

The houses have largest number of government offices outside Bangalore. In 2016, Hubli-Dharwad was selected for solar city and green city. The government of India included Hubballi-Dharwa for a smart city project, and development of infrastructure in the twin-cities. Hubli is famous for Moorusavira Matha also declared and established by a Sharana of Basaveshwara’s time.

The word “Dharwad” means rest on a long journey, for centuries Dharwad acted as the gateway between the Malenadu region, and it’s a resting place for travelers. The Dharwad district consist many tourist attractions including temples and historical monuments.

Hubli is famous for handloom textiles and for being a trading hub for iron and cotton. The city enjoys rich and historical influence since it has been a center of both literature and arts, since the 12th century.

At a distance of 24 km from Gadag, 44 km from Hubli, Amruteshwara Temple is an ancient temple situated at Annigeri in Karnataka. It is one of the popular heritage temples in Karnataka, and among the popular places to visit near Hubli.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Amruteshwara Temple in Annigeri was built in the year 1050 CE by the Kalyani Chalukyas, and was t

he first temple made of soapstone. The temple is a fine example of Kalyani Chalukyan Architecture. Built-in the Dravidian style, the temple has a roof that is supported by 76 pillars. The walls of the temple are covered with carvings of mythological figures. The Amruteshwara Temple was to be the prototype for later, more articulated structures such as the Mahadeva Temple at Itagi.

Annigeri is the birthplace of the famous Kannada poet Adikavi Pampa. It served as the last capital of Kalyani Chalukyas for a short period as their main capital 'Kalyani' was seized by Kalachuri rulers. It was also part of the Hoysalas, and Yadavas, and Kalachuri domain. The historic town came into the limelight post finding mysterious 600+ skulls. Besides, Annigeri is also home to temples dedicated to Banashankari, Basappa, Gajina Basappa, and Hanuman. Annigeri has seven mosques and two Lingayati Mathas.

The best time to visit this temple is between December and January. This is the time of the temple car festival, the Rathotsava when an idol of Lord Amruteshwara is taken out in procession in a Ratha.

The Amruteshwara Temple at Annigeri was built in the Dharwad District in 1050 CE with dravida articulation, and was the first temple made of soapstone. The large and black stone Amruteshwar Temple is in the Kalyani Chalukyas style. The temple has a roof supported by 76 pillars and carvings of mythological figures on its walls. The Amruteshwara Temple was to be the prototype for later, more articulated structures such as the Mahadeva Temple (Itagi) at Itagi. Based on the general plan of the Amrtesvara Temple, the Mahadeva Temple was built in 1112 CE and has the same architectural components as its predecessor.

The ancient and beautiful Basati is built on the slopes of the hill, the temples are carved very beautifully. The path to the hill is very dirty with people using it as an open toilet.

Be careful to take your family members over there, as the place is filled with people gambling and drinking alcohol.
