Gangaikonda Cholapuram |The story of the Chola king who conquered the Gangetic plains
Gangaikonda Cholapuram was the capital city of Rajendra Chola, the greatest Chola king that ever lived. Born to an illustrious father, Raja Raja Chola, this mighty king ruled over large parts of south India over 1000 years ago. He wanted to anoint his new capital city with water from River Ganga. So he sent his army on a long expedition from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu all the way to modern-day Bangladesh. His army defeated many kingdoms en route, and brought back water from the holy river Ganga. He poured this water into a lake he built, the Chola Gangam, one of the largest manmade lakes in India till date. Gangaikonda Cholan literally means 'the Chola king who conquered the (plains of) River Ganga'. Rajendra Chola commanded the largest blue water navy in Indian history, and used it effectively to subdue Srivijaya, a southeast Asian kingdom that lay 3000 kilometres away. The magnificent Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple was built by him and it still stands tall as a charming celebration of his might and power.

Island near Kumbakonam / கும்பகோணம் அருகில் அழகிய தீவு / அணைக்கரை / Anaikarai !
Koppadi bridge video link:
Anaikarai is a village panchayat under Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk near kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. Anaikarai connects with two major bridges. Nearly 1 km long on both sides. It is an island in the basin of Cauvery river. It is located at the distance of 260 km from Chennai and 25 km from Kumbakonam.
The Lower Anaicut built by Sir Arthur Cotton in 19th century AD across Coleroon, the major distributary of Cauvery, is said to be a replicated structure of Kallanai. Nearly 2000 families live in Anaikarai with the main occupation of agriculture and fishing. It is well known and place for river fishes.
Anaikkarai is divided into two regions, since it falls into two different districts of Ariyalur and Thanjavur. The population of vadakarai(kandiankollai) is not included into the population of Anaikkarai. The population of Anaikkarai (area between two bridges and Thenkarai aka Vinayagar theru) is regarded as the population of Vinayagar theru in 2011 census. Sri Villiandavar (Ayyanar) temple is located in the west side of Anaikarai. It was built by Chola empire. The present Sri Villiandavar koil was renovated in early 2000 during Ms. Jayalalitha's regime. This temple is located in the mid of Cauvery river and Cauvery flows in U direction surrounding the temple. The temple also houses many statues of elephants & horses.
The Great Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram is located just 10 km from Anaikari.
Anaikkarai remains an important connecting point between Chennai and delta districts However the two bridges connecting Anaikarai with Kumbakonam is barred for heavy vehicles due to weakening after the heavy rains of 2009
The bridge has been repaired and opened to public for transport from 25 January 2012. Shortly after opening the bridge , both the bridges were again closed for heavy vehicles in 2013 and opened shortly in 2014 and closed again in 2017. Since then, only the light vehicles are allowed and cement barricades are built on both sides for pedestrians.
New four lane bridge is being constructed as that part of upgrading of NH-36 which doesn't passed through the village.
The Lower Anaicut or Anaikkarai is a dam and bridge built on the Kollidam (the northern tributary of Kaveri River) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
It was built in 1902 by the colonial administration of the Madras Presidency for irrigating the erstwhile South Arcot district. Stones from the ruins of Gangaikonda Cholapuram were used to construct the dam. It is situated about 70 miles below the Upper Anaicut and 25 km from Kumbakonam.
There are two dams, north and south one. These dams were built on Kollidam river by British government in 1902 for irrigation. Vadavar river, which has separate dam starts from the North Dam and drains into Veeranam reservoir. Most of the year, the dam remains dry. The river teems with crocodiles.

Nataraja Temple, also referred to as the Chidambaram Nataraja temple or Thillai Nataraja temple, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance – in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple has mythical roots and a Shiva shrine existed at the site when the town was known as Thillai.Chidambaram, the name of the city and the temple literally means atmosphere of wisdom or clothed in thought, the temple architecture symbolizes the connection between the arts and spirituality, creative activity and the divine. The temple wall carvings display all the 108 karanas from the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni, and these postures form a foundation of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance.
The present temple was built in the 10th century when Chidambaram was the capital of the Chola dynasty, making it one of the oldest surviving active temple complexes in South India. After its 10th century consecration by the Cholas who considered Nataraja as their family deity,[10] the temple has been damaged, repaired, renovated and expanded through the 2nd millennium. Most of the temple's surviving plan, architecture and structure is from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with later additions in similar style.[11] While Shiva as Nataraja is the primary deity of the temple, it reverentially presents major themes from Shaktism, Vaishnavism, and other traditions of Hinduism. The Chidambaram temple complex, for example, has the earliest known Amman or Devi temple in South India, a pre-13th century Surya shrine with chariot, shrines for Ganesha, Murugan and Vishnu, one of the earliest known Shiva Ganga sacred pool, large mandapas for the convenience of pilgrims (choultry, ambalam or sabhai) and other monuments.[12][13] Shiva himself is presented as the Nataraja performing the Ananda Tandava (Dance of Delight) in the golden hall of the shrine Pon Ambalam (பொன் அம்பலம்).[14]
The temple is one of the five elemental lingas in the Shaivism pilgrimage tradition, and considered the subtlest of all Shiva temples (Kovil) in Hinduism.[1] It is also a site for performance arts, including the annual Natyanjali dance festival on Maha Shivaratri.

The Bhramapureeswarar shrine is housed in the lower level. The second level houses Periyanakar with Periyanayaki on a Thoni, hence the name Thoniappar. Sattainathar/Vatukanathar is also housed here. There are 22 water bodies associated with this shrine. Three different forms of Shiva are worshipped here, the Shivalingam (Bhrammapureeswarar), a colossal image of Uma Maheswarar (Toniappar) at the medium level, and Bhairavar (Sattanathar) at the upper level. The temple is associated with the legend of child Sambandar who is believed to have been fed by Parvathi on the banks of the temple tank. The child later went on to compose Tevaram, a Saiva canonic literature on Shiva and became one of the most revered Saiva poets in South India
