Andrijevica ~ Discover Montenegro in colour ™ | ❄️🌨️🗻🏡🏞️🌲 #exploremontenegro

Andrijevica is a town in eastern Montenegro. 🔔 Subscribe to our YouTube Channel -

It has a population of 1,073 inhabitants. Andrijevica territory is outspread on 340 km2 and it is surrounded by massives of mountains Komovi, Bjelasica and Prokletije. Andrijevica is the center of Andrijevica Municipality with a population of 5,785 and is considered unofficial centre of Vasojevići region.

The town of Andrijevica is a relatively new settlement, as its first rudiments begin in the middle of the nineteenth century. However, the territory the municipality is for a long time the area of human activity and space with numerous settlements that appeared and disappeared during the history. Archaeological research of the Institute for monuments protection from Cetinje in 1956, it was discovered that traces of material-culture from Neolithic period exist in Berane valley. In addition, traces of the Illyrian culture were found also, so it can be assumed that the environment of Andrijevica was ecumenical space of numerous groups of people. Remainders of Roman settlements are also present in Berane valley, as well as in the vicinity of Andrijevica town. During the Middle ages, the fort of Grace existed, 1 kilometer from today’s town of Andrijevica. The fort was probably guarding the road along the Lim river, which was part of the main road network between Raška and Zeta. This period saw emergence of a number of smaller villages and settlements, all of which predate the Andrijevica town.

map of Montenegro

Montenegro (/ˌmɒntɪˈniːɡroʊ, -ˈneɪɡroʊ, -ˈnɛɡroʊ/ (audio speaker iconlisten); Montenegrin: Crna Gora,[a] Црна Гора, lit. 'Black Mountain', pronounced [tsr̩̂ːnaː ɡǒra]; Albanian: Mali i zi) is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is located on the Adriatic Sea and is a part of the Balkans, sharing borders with Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north and west, Kosovo[c] to the east, Albania to the southeast, the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the southwest, and maritime boundary with Italy. Podgorica, the capital and largest city, covers 10.4% of Montenegro's territory of 13,812 square kilometres (5,333 sq mi), and is home to roughly 30% of its total population of 621,000.

During the Early Medieval period, three principalities were located on the territory of modern-day Montenegro: Duklja, roughly corresponding to the southern half; Travunia, the west; and Rascia proper, the north. The Principality of Zeta emerged in the 14th and 15th centuries. From the late 14th century to the late 18th century, large parts of southern Montenegro were ruled by the Venetian Republic and incorporated into Venetian Albania. The name Montenegro was first used to refer to the country in the late 15th century. After falling under Ottoman rule, Montenegro regained its independence in 1696 under the rule of the House of Petrović-Njegoš, first as a theocracy and later as a secular principality. Montenegro's independence was recognised by the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. In 1910, the country became a kingdom.

After World War I, the kingdom became part of Yugoslavia. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together proclaimed a federation. Following an independence referendum held in May 2006, Montenegro declared its independence and the confederation peacefully dissolved.

Montenegro has an upper middle-income economy and ranks 48th in the Human Development Index. It is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, and the Central European Free Trade Agreement. Montenegro is also a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean, and is currently in the process of joining the European Union Montenegro is divided into twenty-four municipalities (opština). This includes 21 District-level Municipalities and 2 Urban Municipalities, with two subdivisions of Podgorica municipality, listed below. Each municipality can contain multiple cities and towns. Historically, the territory of the country was divided into nahije.

National Park Prokletije - Montenegro

The Prokletije mountain rang occupies an area covering eastern Montenegro, northern Albania and western Kosovo. In Montenegro this mountain range is called Prokletije (Cursed Mountains) most probably because of its inaccessibility and rugged features while in Albania it is called Alpe Shqiptare (Albanian Alps). The Montenegrin part of the Prokletije stretches across the municipalities of Plav, Andrijevica and Rozaje.

The mountain range was created by glaciation which left the most notable traces of this type of erosion among mountains in Europe, apart from Alps right here. About ten small glacial lakes in this region bear witness to this history. Some of them are to be found in the area with highest level of precipitation in Europe where even during the summer snow remains on its highest peaks.

In 2009 montenegrin part of Prokletije within municipality Plav, was proclaimed as fifth national park in Montenegro. It covers an area 16.630 hectares and includes two nature reserves: Volusnica and Hridsko lake. Protection zones around the park is 6.252 hectares.

The real richness of flora and fauna, as wel as fantastic views of Prokletije are a real draw for tourist and hikers. The main features of Prokletije which influenced the designation of sites of national importance are typical limestone relief and natural beauty.
