Ancona is a city on Italy’s Adriatic coast and the capital of the Marche region. It’s known for beaches, such as Passetto Beach, and the hilltop Cathedral of San Ciriaco. In the city center, the Fontana del Calamo is a fountain with bronze masks of mythic figures. In the port are the ancient Arch of Trajan and the Lazzaretto, or Mole Vanvitelliana, an 18th-century pentagonal quarantine station on its own island.
Ancona is a bustling port on the eastern coast of Italy facing the Adriatic Sea. This city lies directly opposite Zadar and is within the Marche region of the country. Furthermore, Ancona is also the capital of the Province of Ancona and has a current population of 101,000. Serving as one of the main ports in the Adriatic, Ancon has an economy based on passenger traffic and commercial shipping. Settled by Greeks around 380 BC, Ancon has always been an important destination and has been part of the Roman Empire, the Lombard Empire and has seen extensive trade with other nations and civilizations across the Adriatic.
As a tourist destination, Ancona benefits from superb weather and has some fantastic beaches serviced by some world class hotels. Furthermore, the whole port area has a fantastic combination of modern facilities and historical buildings such as the Arco di Traiano and the Mole Vanvitelliana. Additionally, this city has some fantastic squares, historical monuments and museums, plus a host of fine restaurants and bars. If you are looking for an exciting and fun packed escape on the Adriatic coast, Ancona is the place to visit
Ancona has an extensive harbour and port and this is a fantastic place to walk through to see the beautiful range of ships and commercial freighters. At the western edge of the port is the Marina – here you can find a host of gorgeous fishing boats, sailing boats and yachts, together with a series of restaurants.
Located on the top of Monte Guasco in the eastern part of Ancona; the Cathedral of Saint Ciriaco is the most iconic religious structure in the city and towers above the surrounding region. A pleasant winding path leads up to the cathedral and there is also a beautiful staircase.
Located in close proximity to Ancona Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums in the region and is an infinitely interesting place to visit. Contained within the museum is a vast collection of artefacts and finds that have been excavated from the surrounding Marche region of Italy.
Notable structures include the Chiesa di San Domenico, the beautiful Prefettura Di Ancona, the Museo Della Citta and the ornate public library. At the eastern side of the square there is a beautiful set of stone stairs complete with historic statues such as the marble statue of Pope Clement XII. Aside from the amazing architecture there is also a series of high quality restaurants, cafes and bars for your enjoyment.
Often brushed aside as being just another of Italy's bolshie, gritty port towns, Ancona is no beauty at first glance from the ferry, it's true. But there's more to Ancona than meets the superficial eye, and to simply bypass it is to miss much. In the old town, crowned by the duomo, you can peel back layers of history of the city founded by Greek settlers from Syracuse around 387 BC, admiring Roman ruins, the rich stash of its archaeological museum and its Renaissance palazzi, which glow softly in the evening light. Linger long enough in its hilltop parks overlooking the Adriatic and lively boulevards and cafe-rimmed piazzas and you'll see a more likeable side to Le Marche's seafront capital, promise.

Ancona - The Doric City
Capital of the Marches Region, lies on the promontory of Monte Conero directly facing the sea. Founded by the Greeks, the city experienced remarkable development when the Emperor Hadrian extended the then-small port, long of great strategic importance for the traffic across the Adriatic.
Among its principal monuments are the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, with its white and rose marble façade. The Cathedral dominates the city from the heights of Guasco Hill, where the city’s Acropolis was built (and the remains of which are evident today). Be sure to see the National Archaeological Museum of The Marches, preserving relics from the Iron Age and from the civilizations that peopled the Adriatic coast; as well as the 11th-Century Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, originally in the Romanesque; Trajan's Arch, built in the year 115 by Apollodoro da Damasco; and the Mole Vanvitelliana, a military construction designed by Luigi Vanvitelli in the 18th Century. The Roman Amphitheatre (1st Century A.D.) is a splendid Roman remnant, with thermal baths in its annex; the baths feature breathtaking mosaics with various epigraphs.
Much of the Province of Ancona composes part of the Conero Regional Park, characterized by sprawling evergreen woods and Mediterranean maquis, by cliffs jutting out high above the sea, beaches accessible on via water, and a countryside still pristine but rich in the local fruits of the land - including lavendar, honey, olive oil and citrus. Certain spots within the Park should be mentioned, particularly Portonovo, evocative and highly-frequented attraction, for its forests in the vicinity of the beaches, and for its ancient monuments.

Places to see in ( Ancona - Italy ) Piazza del Plebiscito di Ancona
Places to see in ( Ancona - Italy ) Piazza del Plebiscito di Ancona
Piazza del Plebiscito , more commonly known as Piazza del Papa , is one of the four main squares of Ancona (the others are Piazza della Repubblica, or Teatro, Piazza Roma and Piazza Cavour, the oldest of them: it was opened in the 15th century up to the city expansion followed by the Italian unity was the central square of the city, the big square where the borders of the three quarters met : Porto, Capodimonte and San Pietro.Today it is the center of this last district.
Its shape is singular: very elongated rectangular; moreover, the fact that it includes various levels, connected by two flights and stairways, is also particular. On it overlook some of the most important monuments of the city: the Government Palace , with its tower, the church of San Domenico and, standing on the shelf in the center of the square, the statue of Clement XII , the Pope who, new Trajan , was responsible for the rebirth of the port in the eighteenth century .
Until 1822, the square was considered the only center of the city; in that year the realization of the Muse Theater in front of the homonymous square changed the situation and in the post-unification period the opening of Piazza Roma and Piazza Cavour definitively transformed Ancona into a polycentric city. However, each center has its function, and Piazza del Plebiscito plays the nerve center of the oldest districts and is today one of the main centers of social and nightlife in the city.
The Church of San Domenico dominates the square from the top of a staircase. It was designed by Carlo Marchionni in 1763, the first stone was laid in 1771. For its construction the pre-existing church of the same name, from the 13th century, was demolished, which stood more to the left than the current façade. With the French occupation and the advent of the Anconitana Republic , the church, of which the façade had not yet been completed, was used as a barracks in 1778; the upper part of the main façade therefore remained unfinished. It was reopened for worship in 1816, with the Restoration .
Francesco di Giorgio Martini participated in the Palazzo del Governo in 1484 . It was from the fourteenth century until 1532 the seat of the government of the Republic of Ancona , in place of the previous Palazzo degli Anziani . With the incorporation of Ancona into the Papal State , the palace was the seat of the papal legate . From 1861, when the city entered the Kingdom of Italy , the palace became the seat of the Prefecture .
Museum of the city of Ancona . Its entrance is near the statue of Clement XII. It extends, in part, to the premises of the former San Tommaso Hospital in Canterbury, opened in 1394. In 1470 in this hospital the miracle of the picture of the Crowned Virgin occurred (destroyed with the bombardment of San Domenico in the Second World War ). By order of Sixtus V in this place the church of the same name was then built, then destroyed to make way for the present church of San Domenico.
