Amarante the legend of the Portuguese Saint Valentine. Lamego crossroads to Santiago de Compostela
We leave Porto and the coast to return to the interior of Portugal. Firstly we visited Amarante, on the banks of the Támega River, a city not as well known as others, but which is undoubtedly essential if you visit the north of Portugal. We cross the Támega River through the San Gonzalo Bridge to enter the historic center where, above all, the Monastery of San Gonzalo stands out, where the tomb of the man known as the Portuguese Saint Valentine is located. But Amarante is also known for its pastry shops, where you can find, among others, a typical sweet with a unique shape, linked to the legend of San Gonzalo. Then we move to Lamego, dominated from above by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, which is reached through a beautifully decorated staircase, and once at the top, we are given an unbeatable panoramic view of this city, crossing of roads to Santiago de Compostela. We descend again to Lamego, where we can visit the cathedral or enter the citadel dominated by the castle.
