Over the Arabian Sea is active hurricane Chapala. That is quite remarkable in this region. The hurricane is on its way to Yemen and Oman.
The 1 second heaviest hurricane
Chapala is at time of writing, with winds of 220 kilometers per hour and involved is a category 4 hurricane. The hurricane season in this region of the world is through the monsoon and adjacent desert areas very short, with a peak in May / June and another peak in late October / early November. The Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea which is part of, is around 30 degrees for this time of the year exceptionally hot. Therefore, a tropical depression last week could soon become this powerful hurricane Chapala which on Friday reached the first second highest category on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Hurricane Gonu in 2007, incidentally, was something more powerful. This formed over the Arabian Sea and reached Category 5 with winds of almost 270 km / h.
Rare
Incidentally Oman in the past a couple of times hit by typhoons, but in Yemen has never registered a hurricane so far. The monsoon works against development of these weather systems and the Arabian Sea's not really big enough. Strong wind shear and dry desert air impede the development of (severe) hurricanes also. With wind shear we mean the situation, that the wind with increasing altitude substantial changes in direction and / or speed. A hurricane begins as a mood or group showers and coalesce into storm complexes. A strong wind shear causes the rain to be blown apart, so they can not organize together.
In the night from Tuesday to land
According to the latest insights Chapala turns to night to Tuesday to country and will be watered down at that time to a category 1 hurricane. Both the coastal regions of Oman and Yemen could particularly still get extreme rain. Probably the focus of the heaviest rainfall in the Yemeni coastal city of Al Mukalla until you see the west of the border with Oman to lie. This is a relatively sparsely populated region. There are quantities of rain in such a 24h time up to 500 liters of water per square meter (= millimeter) is computed, while the average annual quantity in this region amounts to only 50 to 150 mm! There's so much of a good rain fall ... The extreme rainfall is flooding, landslides and the like result. For comparison: in our country is in a whole year about 800 millimeters.

1st stop in Yemen from Oman, Al Mukallah. We had planned on passing this stop, but SV Shiraz wanted to stop to top off on fuel in case we had to motor all the way to Aden. Turns out leaving here we had great following winds that we sailed all the way to Aden with full fuel tanks. A port that is never visited, but locals super friendly and all yell hello.
