Paris is the capital and most populous city of France, with an estimated population of 2,148,271 residents as of 2020, in an area of 105 square kilometres (41 square miles).
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Worldwide Cost of Living Survey in 2018, Paris was the second most expensive city in the world, after Singapore, and ahead of Zürich, Hong Kong, Oslo and Geneva.
Paris has a typical Western European oceanic climate, which is affected by the North Atlantic Current.The overall climate throughout the year is mild and moderately wet. Summer days are usually warm and pleasant with average temperatures between 15 and 25 °C (59 and 77 °F), and a fair amount of sunshine. Each year, however, there are a few days when the temperature rises above 32 °C (90 °F).Spring and autumn have, on average, mild days and fresh nights but are changing and unstable. Surprisingly warm or cool weather occurs frequently in both seasons.In winter, sunshine is scarce; days are cool, and nights are cold but generally above freezing with low temperatures around 3 °C (37 °F).
Greater Paris, comprising Paris and its three surrounding departments, received 38 million visitors in 2019, a record, measured by hotel arrivals.
The city's top cultural attraction in 2019 was the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur (11 million visitors), followed by the Louvre (9.6 million visitors); the Eiffel Tower (6.1 million visitors); the Centre Pompidou (3.5 million visitors); and the Musée d'Orsay (3.3 million visitors).
The centre of Paris contains the most visited monuments in the city, including the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre as well as the Sainte-Chapelle; Les Invalides, where the tomb of Napoleon is located, and the Eiffel Tower are located on the Left Bank south-west of the centre. The Panthéon and the Catacombs of Paris are also located on the Left Bank of the Seine. Other landmarks are laid out east to west along the historical axis of Paris, which runs from the Louvre through the Tuileries Garden, the Luxor Column in the Place de la Concorde, and the Arc de Triomphe, to the Grande Arche of La Défense.
Several other much-visited landmarks are located in the suburbs of the city; the Basilica of St Denis, in Seine-Saint-Denis, is the birthplace of the Gothic style of architecture and the royal necropolis of French kings and queens. The Paris region hosts three other UNESCO Heritage sites: the Palace of Versailles in the west,the Palace of Fontainebleau in the south and the medieval fairs site of Provins in the east. In the Paris region, Disneyland Paris, in Marne-la-Vallée, 32 kilometres (20 miles) east of the centre of Paris, received 9.66 million visitors in 2017.

The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel, [tuʁ‿ɛˈfɛl] Play audio file) is a 330-meter-tall iron-frame tower in Paris. It is in the 7th arrondissement at the north-west end of the Champ de Mars (Field of Mars), near the banks of the Seine. Built from 1887 to 1889, the 10,100-ton structure was built as a monumental entrance portal and lookout tower for the world exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower, named after the builder Gustave Eiffel and still 312 meters high at the time of construction, was the tallest building in the world from its construction until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930. With the broadcast of the first public radio program in Europe in 1921 and the first French television program in 1935, the building contributed to the history of radio and television as a transmission tower. The television tower is the most important transmission system in the greater Paris area and, as the tower restaurant, houses the Le Jules Verne restaurant, which has been awarded a Michelin star.
As the tallest building in Paris, it still shapes the cityscape today and, with around seven million paying visitors a year, is one of the most visited landmarks in the world. The tower is one of the most recognizable icons of architecture and engineering. The Eiffel Tower is the model for many imitation buildings and is often taken up in art and culture in connection with Paris and France. It is considered the national symbol of the French and has become a global icon of modernity. The Eiffel Tower has been listed as a monument historique since 1964, and in 1986 the American Society of Civil Engineers included the building in the list of historic milestones in engineering architecture.

The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel, [tuʁ‿ɛˈfɛl] Play audio file) is a 330-meter-tall iron-frame tower in Paris. It is in the 7th arrondissement at the north-west end of the Champ de Mars (Field of Mars), near the banks of the Seine. Built from 1887 to 1889, the 10,100-ton structure was built as a monumental entrance portal and lookout tower for the world exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower, named after the builder Gustave Eiffel and still 312 meters high at the time of construction, was the tallest building in the world from its construction until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930. With the broadcast of the first public radio program in Europe in 1921 and the first French television program in 1935, the building contributed to the history of radio and television as a transmission tower. The television tower is the most important transmission system in the greater Paris area and, as the tower restaurant, houses the Le Jules Verne restaurant, which has been awarded a Michelin star.
As the tallest building in Paris, it still shapes the cityscape today and, with around seven million paying visitors a year, is one of the most visited landmarks in the world. The tower is one of the most recognizable icons of architecture and engineering. The Eiffel Tower is the model for many imitation buildings and is often taken up in art and culture in connection with Paris and France. It is considered the national symbol of the French and has become a global icon of modernity. The Eiffel Tower has been listed as a monument historique since 1964, and in 1986 the American Society of Civil Engineers included the building in the list of historic milestones in engineering architecture.

Meanwhile, in an effort to boost the global economic image of metropolitan Paris, several skyscrapers (300 m (984 ft) and higher) have been approved since 2006 in the business district of La Défense, to the west of the city proper, and are scheduled to be completed by the early 2010s. Paris authorities also made public they are planning to authorise the construction of skyscrapers within the city proper by relaxing the cap on building height for the first time since the construction of the Tour Montparnasse in the early 1970s.
