Noto - The Gorgeous Golden Baroque Sicilian City!

Today we stroll the perfectly parallel streets of Noto! Famous for its radiant golden limestone and being the home of Sicilian Baroque architecture, as well as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Noto, Syracuse is one of the seven towns of the 'Val di Noto' which is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was completely destroyed in 1693 by a massive earthquake that affected the whole area. When it came to rebuilding it during the Sicilian Baroque period, there were three main architects and so a lot of buildings have a similar look as they were all centered around one main idea: all the streets were going to line up with the sun so when the sun shines onto the city, it lights up all the streets and reflects off of the yellow limestone, as evident in its beauty today.

CALTANISSETTA, SICILY

After Agrigento, our Sicily trip now on Day #7 brought us to the beautiful town of Caltanissetta. This was on a weather-permitting morning of September 6, 2019. The quick walk around this quaint town was enough for us to fall in love with it. What we saw in that brief moment was a town rich in history, interesting arts, good people and food. We walked aimlessly and didn't really know where we were going. We followed our instincts and interestingly enough, we cruised through Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Corso Umberto I which led us to the historic center, Palazzo Moncada, Sant’Agata al Collegio, and Piazza Garibaldi. At the center of the Piazza is the Triton Fountain located between the Santa Maria la Nova Cathedral and the Church of San Sebastiano. It depicts a bronze horse tamed by a triton and threatened by two sea monsters. The town was busy that day preparing for its annual Sicily food festival. As we were told by the locals, this once-a-year event showcases Sicilian street foods, indigenous products, arts/crafts and local wine and finishes off with a musical concert where locals dancing through the night. Although we missed this fun event, we did have a blast in that quick visit!!

Borgo Barocco in Sicilia SORTINO Siracusa

Pantalica, the necropolis, the Anapo valley and the Calcinara stream. Trekking in Sicily.

Pantalica is the archaeological area within the Anapo valley and Calcinara river, in the province of Syracuse, eastern Sicily. Protected by the Pantalica Oriented Nature Reserve, the Anapo Valley and the Cava Grande stream, the site is one of the most fascinating naturalistic areas in Sicily, so much so that UNESCO in 2005 awarded it the title of World Heritage Site.
Inside the canyons excavated by the Anapo and Calcinara, the rock necropolis of Pantalica develops thousands of rock-cut tombs dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages starting from the 13th century BC. The remains of the ancient civilization are also represented by the Anaktoron, the ruins of a stone building located on a hill in a dominant position, and by traces of defensive walls and moats. It will be the arrival of the Greeks to put an end to the ancient kingdom but Pantalica will remain inhabited in the following centuries as evidenced by the Byzantine village, the rock churches and the troglodyte dwellings.

Not only archeology, Pantalica, the Anapo and Calcinara valleys are also extraordinary from a naturalistic point of view. The excavated canyons host a bursting nature characterized by a remarkable botanical and faunal variety. A natural paradise for lovers of trekking and hiking.
The visit to the site starts from one of the two main entrances, the first in the territory of the municipality of Sortino and the second in that of Ferla and Cassaro. The numerous paths that cross the necropolis start from here. Among these, the easiest is the one that follows the route of the old Syracuse-Vizzini railway built at the end of the nineteenth century and decommissioned in the fifties. Between tunnels, bridges and terraces, the path winds along the entire Anapo valley. A small museum has been created in the premises of the old station Necropoli Pantalica. Another path not far away and reachable with a short drive by car, descends to the Calcinara gorges. Walking along it you can visit the North Necropolis, the small church of the Crucifix and the cave of the Bats.
For hikers, emotions are guaranteed. In the summer (Spring / Summer) it is also possible to bathe in the refreshing waters of the rivers. But don't forget to bring food and water!

Valle dell'Anapo e Pantalica - Patrimonio UNESCO (Sortino-Siracusa-Sicily-Italy)

Buona Visione.
