Top Things To Do and See in Bansko, Bulgaria | Bansko, bulgaria | Welcome to Bansko Bulgaria
Yes, Bansko is known for the its skiing. People flock to the area from all over Europe to enjoy the new facilities and the ideal ski conditions. But what about the summer? Well, summer holidaying in Bansko is also fun. There are plenty of things to do in the mountains and in the town itself to make it a worthwhile holiday destination.
Bansko is crowded in the winter. The taverns are filled with people and the slopes are crowded. Parking can be a problem. But, in the summer, the peace of the mountains and the beauty of the village make it an ideal location for your summer holiday.
The Taverns (Mehani)
If you've been to Bansko in the winter, you know that the mehani are filled with people. Finding a table is difficult. Parking your car is difficult. When all you want to do is relax after a day on the slopes, this can be frustrating.
Not so in the summer. The mehani are significantly less crowded. This means that you will be able to enjoy spending time with the people you are traveling with and can enjoy a few drinks without worrying about the noise or without waiting for a place to sit.
The Mountains
Bansko is an ideal place if you want to spend your vacation enjoying the surrounding mountains. Hiking is a popular activity, and so is picnicking. The surrounding Pirin Mountains, for example, are a popular destination and there are trails and picnic sites located by streams and in meadows. If you are interested in doing either of these activities, ask a local for advice or ask at your hotel.
The picnic sites are well used because it is a popular activity for the locals. They feature stone slabs that are designed for cooking and roasting. The locals prepare dishes such as pork chops and stuffed green peppers. If you do decide to cook using the stone slabs, smear it with bacon grease to prevent food from sticking.
A great hike to try is to climb Vihren, which is 2914 meters high. Vihren is a the highest mountain in the Pirin Mountain range. Since it is the highest peak, climbing it is quite an accomplishment. But, be careful. Vihren means the gale and the locals refer to it is the peak of storms.
Mountains tend to have their own weather patterns, especially when they are tall. The day could start off beautifully but halfway through your climb a storm could roll in. Just be careful and practice good judgment. Don't be afraid to turn around. The mountain will always be there and you can try again some other time.
Other things to do
There are plenty of other things to do. You can watch the sunset near the micro dam, take a train ride, or soak in the mineral springs in Banya, a nearby town. The springs offer a great way to relax and rejuvenate after a stressful week, or even after a physical day climbing Pirin Mountain. There is also a golf course in Bansko.
Although the ski slopes are closed in the summer, it is still a great vacation destination, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. Stay in one of Bansko's hotels or rent a vacation home or apartment. Once you get there you can enjoy activities such as golfing, hiking, soaking in the mineral springs, or picnicking.

Nestinari - Traditional Fire Dance in Bulgaria @ Rozhen Festival 2015
Nestinarstvo, or the ritual fire dancing on live coals, is an ancient Bulgarian custom, which has both Christian and pagan elements. It is
believed to originate from the Thracians, and more accurately from their sun worship. Only fire dancers (nestinari) can dance over the coals - people, dedicated to the mystery of the ritual.
The Bulgarian fire dance is included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
Isn't it amazing?

Dzhunev Photography

Simitli - one of the towns located at the foot of Pirin mountain
The town of Simitli is located in Southwestern Bulgaria. It is located in Blagoevgrad district and is near the city of Blagoevgrad. The city is the administrative center of Simitli municipality. The town of Simitli is located 14 km south of Blagoevgrad and 48 km north of the town of Sandanski. It is located in the Simitli valley at the foot of the Rila, Pirin and Vlahina mountains. The Struma River divides it into two parts - the actual town of Simitli and the Oranovo district. Here Struma meets the Gradev river. It is surrounded from the east by the western slopes of Rila and Pirin, and from the west by Vlahina. 25 km from the town of Simitli in the Vlahina Mountains, there is the rock phenomenon of Komatinski skali.
Every year the city hosts the Simitlia masquerade cooking festival! The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky and the Cross, which are located above the town of Simitli, are also a must see!
The Simitli town festival is celebrated every year on September 8, and is always accompanied by a rich festive program, lots of fun and positive emotions.
City of Simitli - drone footage captured by Dzhunev Photography
Simitli is one of the few small towns that in recent years has seen growth, both as a business and as an interest of young families to live there.
A number of enterprises opened their doors precisely in the town of Simitli.
The management of the city in recent years definitely (without making brushes) shows results! The city is developing in the right direction, and the facts speak for these words.
For example, the city has a great beach, there are factories, labor, there is manufacturing.
Separately, the town itself is peaceful to live in. It is true that many of the city's residents are abroad, but we believe that this will change and people from abroad will return to their native homes.

Driving in Bulgaria: Republic Road I-19 from Bansko to Simitli
#Bansko #DrivinginBulgaria #ScenicDrive
In this video you can drive along on the I-19 from the mountain town of Bansko to Simitli, where the road joins the Republic Road 1 (E79). Bansko is a popular ski resort and this road carries quite a bit of traffic in both summer and winter high seasons.
The road itself isn't as scenic, as it mostly runs through a flat valley in between Pirin and Rila National Parks. It connects to the E79 about 10 kilometers South of Blagoevgrad. This stretch of E79 is still represented by the I-1, as the future Struma Motorway lot here is still under construction.
In a future video, you can drive along on the E79 headed South towards Kulata and the Greek border. Stay tuned!

Renting a car in Bulgaria: Bulgarian Road Trip Series
You can travel to most parts of Bulgaria by bus or by train, but we wanted to get out into the countryside of Bulgaria, so we did something that we’ve never done before in our 11 years of traveling the world: we rented a car! We were excited to have the car so we could travel at the pace we wanted and not have to worry about a bus schedule. We were surprised by how easy and affordable renting a car is in Bulgaria.
We started our road trip by renting a car in Plovdiv on our way to Veliko Tarnovo, about three hours north. We made some pit stops along the way to learn more about Bulgarian history. The trees in the hills of Bulgaria were absolutely stunning!
This is Part 1 of our Bulgaria Road Trip Series. Check out the rest here:

Welcome back to the A3 Struma Motorway in the South of Bulgaria. In this video you can drive along on the remaining stretch of finished Struma Motorway until Kulata at the border with Greece. The second stretch of motorway starts just South of Kresna and is about 40 kilometers in length.
The missing link of the A3 runs through challenging terrain and would be about 50 kilometers long. To see the first completed stretch of A3 Struma Motorway, make sure to check out this video I uploaded a few weeks ago:

Sofia, Park Pirin, Bulgaria.
Pirin National Park, originally named Vihren National Park, encompasses the larger part of the Pirin Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria, spanning an area of 403.56 km2 (155.82 sq mi). It is one of the three national parks in the country, the others being Rila National Park and Central Balkan National Park. The park was established in 1962 and its territory was expanded several times since then. Pirin National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The altitude varies from 950 m to 2,914 m at Vihren, Bulgaria's second highest summit and the Balkans' third.
The park is situated in Blagoevgrad Province, the nation's south-westernmost region, on the territory of seven municipalities: Bansko, Gotse Delchev, Kresna, Razlog, Sandanski, Simitli and Strumyani. There are no populated places within its territory. Two nature reserves are located within the boundaries of Pirin National Park, Bayuvi Dupki–Dzhindzhiritsa and Yulen. Bayuvi Dupki–Dzhindzhiritsa is among the oldest in Bulgaria, established in 1934 and is included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme. The whole territory is part of the network of nature protection areas of the European Union, Natura 2000.
Pirin is renowned for its 118 glacial lakes, the largest and the deepest of them being Popovo Lake. Many of them are situated in cirques. There are also a few small glaciers, such Snezhnika, located in the deep Golemiya Kazan cirque at the steep northern foot of Vihren, and Banski Suhodol. They are the southernmost glaciers in Europe.
Pirin National Park falls within the Rodope montane mixed forests terrestrial ecoregion of the Palearctic temperate broadleaf and mixed forest. Forests cover 57.3% of the parks area and almost 95% of them are coniferous forests. The average age of the forests is 85 years. Bulgaria's oldest tree, Baikushev's pine, is located in the park. With an approximate age of about 1,300 years it is a contemporary of the foundation of the Bulgarian state in 681 AD. The fauna of the Pirin National Park is diverse and includes 45 species of mammals, 159 species of birds, 11 species of reptiles, 8 species of amphibia and 6 species of fish.
