Top Things To Do and See in Bansko, Bulgaria | Bansko, bulgaria | Welcome to Bansko Bulgaria
Top Things To Do and See in Bansko, Bulgaria | Bansko, bulgaria | Welcome to Bansko Bulgaria
Yes, Bansko is known for the its skiing. People flock to the area from all over Europe to enjoy the new facilities and the ideal ski conditions. But what about the summer? Well, summer holidaying in Bansko is also fun. There are plenty of things to do in the mountains and in the town itself to make it a worthwhile holiday destination.
Bansko is crowded in the winter. The taverns are filled with people and the slopes are crowded. Parking can be a problem. But, in the summer, the peace of the mountains and the beauty of the village make it an ideal location for your summer holiday.
The Taverns (Mehani)
If you've been to Bansko in the winter, you know that the mehani are filled with people. Finding a table is difficult. Parking your car is difficult. When all you want to do is relax after a day on the slopes, this can be frustrating.
Not so in the summer. The mehani are significantly less crowded. This means that you will be able to enjoy spending time with the people you are traveling with and can enjoy a few drinks without worrying about the noise or without waiting for a place to sit.
The Mountains
Bansko is an ideal place if you want to spend your vacation enjoying the surrounding mountains. Hiking is a popular activity, and so is picnicking. The surrounding Pirin Mountains, for example, are a popular destination and there are trails and picnic sites located by streams and in meadows. If you are interested in doing either of these activities, ask a local for advice or ask at your hotel.
The picnic sites are well used because it is a popular activity for the locals. They feature stone slabs that are designed for cooking and roasting. The locals prepare dishes such as pork chops and stuffed green peppers. If you do decide to cook using the stone slabs, smear it with bacon grease to prevent food from sticking.
A great hike to try is to climb Vihren, which is 2914 meters high. Vihren is a the highest mountain in the Pirin Mountain range. Since it is the highest peak, climbing it is quite an accomplishment. But, be careful. Vihren means the gale and the locals refer to it is the peak of storms.
Mountains tend to have their own weather patterns, especially when they are tall. The day could start off beautifully but halfway through your climb a storm could roll in. Just be careful and practice good judgment. Don't be afraid to turn around. The mountain will always be there and you can try again some other time.
Other things to do
There are plenty of other things to do. You can watch the sunset near the micro dam, take a train ride, or soak in the mineral springs in Banya, a nearby town. The springs offer a great way to relax and rejuvenate after a stressful week, or even after a physical day climbing Pirin Mountain. There is also a golf course in Bansko.
Although the ski slopes are closed in the summer, it is still a great vacation destination, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. Stay in one of Bansko's hotels or rent a vacation home or apartment. Once you get there you can enjoy activities such as golfing, hiking, soaking in the mineral springs, or picnicking.

Nestled at the foot of the Pirin Mountains and next to Pirin National Park, Bansko is considered the best ski resort in Bulgaria. With the magnificent mountain peaks of Vihren and Todorka as its backdrop, reliable snowfall from December to April and a combination of traditional and modern Hotels, it's one of Eastern Europe's best-skiing destinations.
This review will show you the essential things you need to know before heading to Bansko. We will share clever tips to help you make better decisions, save lift queue time and money, and have an enjoyable holiday in Bansko.
Bansko has 70km of piste, rising from town level at 936m to an altitude of 2600m, and with reliable snow cover between December and April. It has a relatively modern ski lift system that will get you anywhere you need. Bansko is a small ski resort that offers excellent value for money. It has eight blue runs, including two ski roads for those new to skiing. For more advanced skiers, it provides 8 red runs and the black Tomba run, named after the former World Cup alpine ski racer Alberto Tomba.
Half of Bansko’s runs are blue. For newbies, it’s best to start at the ski trails number 1 and 1a. If you have some runs under your belt, you can take the shiligarnik, Mosta and Plato lifts. They will lead you to the major blue runs: 11, 3, 5 and 10. There are a few ski schools in Bansko that can help you learn the ropes. They are located all through Pirin street, so even if you didn’t book online, they are pretty easy to find. If you need a ski school, check out Pirin 2000, Bansko’s ski school, located only meters from the gondola. 6 days x 4 hours group lessons costs 265€. 6 days x 2 hours priced 170€. These are the prices for ski or snowboard tuition for groups of up to 8 people in the high season which is Dec 22nd until Mar 7th.
You can take shorter courses, down to 1 day x 2 hours. Meeting point is in Banderishka Polyana, next to the gondola top station.
4 hours of private lessons costs 170€ for one, 220€ for 2, 250€ for 3 and 280€ for 4.
The prices for mid-season are 10% cheaper.
If you are advanced or intermediate, then the Banderitza lift and the 6 -seater Todorka are your best friends for the stay. They can get you anywhere on the west side of the resort, where nearly all of the red runs are, plus the only black run. From Banderitza 2 and Plato lifts you can ski anywhere. Bansko has 14 lifts, including one Gondola, six 4-seaters and two 6-seaters. Bansko doesn’t offer much space for advanced skiers, but the slopes are well-groomed, and plenty of snow canons keep them fresh.
Bear in mind that the slopes can get packed during holidays and weekends due to the small ski area and the cheap prices. Really really packed. So get to the slopes bright and early for open runs and fresh snow.
Six days skipass for adults will cost you 230 euros for adults and just shy of 100 euros for kids seven to12 years old. The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev which is around half a Euro.
To get to the ski area, only one lift connects the town, which is quite big for a ski resort. Therefore, the queue to the gondola can take up to 2 hours(!) In the high season. On these days, the town organises several ski buses that carry people to the top station, which is a 20 minutes ride, but the line to the ski bus is also 45 minutes. There are other tricks to avoid the 2 hours queue, which we will reveal in the insiders’ tips chapter later in the video ????
The 7km long gondola takes a 27-minute ride to Bunderishka Polyana, the base of the main part of the ski area at 1600 meters. From here, you can take the Banderiza 1 & 2 lifts to get to the top. To ski down from here, take ski road number 1, a 10km long easy blue run.
Bansko’s apres scene is small
But the nightlife scene is where Bansko excels, certainly for a modest resort. When the site is packed, the night comes alive and young people from all over get the bar hopping going.
Here are some of our favourite spots to hit After dinner. one of Bansko’s warm and folksy pubs, the Amigo is a good place for an early drink. It has live shows of cover bands that play mainstream classic with in a fun vibe. The disco is a bit wilder with more upbeat music and drinking contests. The oxygen is a great spot for some hardcore dancing and drinking and is the most popular club here. The Flash club has a bit more of a bling vibe and fency decoration. If you’re all worn out, and all that drinking made you hungry, Bansko has you covered with some late night spots especially for those with a sweet tooth
Bansko has several Casino's like the one in Platinum hotel.

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria.
It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park.
The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD), and today houses around 60 monks.
Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments.
The whole complex occupies an area of 8,800 m² and is rectangular in form, centred on the inner yard (3,200 m²), where the tower and the main church are situated.
The main church of the monastery was erected in the middle of the 19th century.
Its architect is Pavel Ioanov, who worked on it from 1834 to 1837.
The church has five domes, three altars and two side chapels, while one of the most precious items inside is the gold-plated iconostasis, famous for its wood-carving, the creation of which took five years to four handicraftsmen.
The frescoes, finished in 1846, are the work of many masters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, including the famous brothers Zahari Zograf and Dimitar Zograf.
The church is also home to many valuable icons, dating from the 14th to the 19th century.
Porticos in the courtyard have Mamluk influence with the striped painting and the domes, which became more popular in the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Egypt.
The four-storey residential part of the complex consists of 300 chambers, four chapels, an abbot's room, a kitchen, a library housing 250 manuscripts and 9,000 old printed matters, and a donor's room.
The exterior of the complex, with its high walls of stone and little windows, resembles a fortress more than a monastery.
The museum of the Rila Monastery is particularly famous for housing Rafail's Cross, a wooden cross made from a whole piece of wood (81×43 cm).
It was whittled down by a monk named Rafail using fine burins and magnifying lenses to recreate 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures.
Work on this piece of art lasted not less than 12 years before it was completed in 1802, when the monk lost his sight.

The Kordopulov House is a large Bulgarian National Revival House in the Southwestern Bulgarian town of Melnik. The house, possibly the largest of its kinds, consists of a ground floor that includes a wine cellar, a semi-basement and a bay floor. The house belonged to Manolis Kordopulos, an affluent wine merchant who traded throughout Europe.
The mansion is located in Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria. The town boasts a long history of wine. Its endemic variety Shiroka Melnishka Losa, reportedly produced since antiquity, utilises grapes with large and rough leaves and small, dark-coloured berries. Wines here are complex and spicy.
Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria, is located in the Pirin Mountains, near the Greek border. With a population of less than 300 residents, this charming town is known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant wine culture. Melnik is a must-visit destination for travellers looking to explore Bulgarian heritage, taste exquisite wines, and immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.
One of the most striking features of Melnik is its landscape. The town is surrounded by the unique Melnik Earth Pyramids, a series of natural sandstone formations that create an otherworldly backdrop for the town's traditional architecture. These dramatic pyramids have been sculpted by centuries of wind and rain, resulting in towering cliffs and fascinating shapes that draw visitors from all over the world.
Melnik's history dates back to antiquity, with evidence of Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine settlements in the region. During the medieval period, the town flourished as a significant trading and cultural centre under Bulgarian and Byzantine rule. Melnik's strategic position, along with its wine production, contributed to its prosperity during this time.
The town's architecture is characterised by the Bulgarian National Revival style, with beautifully preserved houses featuring ornate woodcarvings, stone masonry, and colourful frescoes. A prime example of this architectural style is the Kordopulov House.
Melnik's wine culture is another major draw for visitors. Today, Melnik's wineries and vineyards continue the tradition of producing high-quality, unique wines that have gained international acclaim. Travellers can visit these wineries for wine tastings and learn more about the town's wine heritage.
Another notable attraction near Melnik is the Rozhen Monastery, one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in Bulgaria. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery features impressive frescoes, ornate wood carvings, and a peaceful atmosphere that attracts pilgrims and tourists alike.
Melnik is a captivating destination that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The town's stunning landscapes, rich wine culture, and well-preserved architecture make it an unforgettable experience for anyone seeking to explore the hidden treasures of Bulgaria.

In Melnik, there are just 385 inhabitants of this mountain village and pretty much all of its buildings are historic landmarks. The town was founded over 1,000 years ago and has been ruled by various nations.
Melnik is known for its remote location in the Pirin Mountains as well as its winemaking tradition and Agrarian culture, historic buildings, and quaint small-town charm. Just outside of town are the famous Melnik Earth Pyramids, a geological formation that was formed by erosion.
The Melnik Earth Pyramids are a widely visited natural phenomenon overlooking the town from the north at the foothills of the Pirin Mountains. Their height is nearly 100m and there are pleasant hiking trails to and through the bizarre formations.
