I flew into Minsk at the beginning of October and was on one of the only two flights arriving on that day. I was eligible for a 30-day visa-free as long as I enter and exit the country through Minsk International airport. I booked a $19 room in a shared apartment with a window overlooking the train passed by.
The first 48 hours of my solo travel were merely observing and absorbing this new environment. I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous or anxious about coming to Belarus. I sensed fear in me, from the news that I consumed while researching and the uncertainty that came along with it. While fear is important to keep us alert, I know that every country has different layers to unravel. Through my solo travel, I hope to showcase the other side of Belarus.

Visiting different villages and interacting with locals in the countryside of Belarus was one of my favourite travel experiences so far. I was staying with a local Belarusian family and got to be introduced to different aspects of the village. Starting from different neighbours, markets, shops, cultural centres, schools and many more. As my friend and I were exploring the older part of the village, we stumbled across a babushka, a Russian word for grandma and got to spend some time with her. An experience with the older generation always warms my heart as it teaches us compassion and humility.

A Belarusian village in Poland?
Somewhere in Eastern Poland or more precisely in the Podlaskie region something very special is located. You probably have never heard of this region before since most people visit Krakow, Gdansk or Warsaw when they come to Poland.
Come with me to visit three fascinating fairytale villages in the Land of Open Shutters.
The Land of Open Shutters boasts unique wooden architecture – houses with incredibly intricate decorations and vividly colourful window shutters, which remain open all the time. Characteristic of traditional Russian folk house-building, these extraordinary ornaments are not to be found in other regions of Poland. The population of this part of Podlaskie is mainly Orthodox, of Belarussian descent. They still follow centuries-old folk traditions, which is clearly visible in architecture, religious rites and local dialect.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN BELARUS?
1. MINSK
There is a lot for visitors to savor in the capital city of Belarus. Independence Square spread across 7 hectares is one of the largest public squares in the continent. This area is ideal for an evening stroll, set amidst the pretty dancing lights and water fountains, in case tourists are wondering about things to do in Minsk. Do not forget your sunscreen -
Independence Avenue is another among Belarus destinations that should not be missed, serving as the principal artery of the city complete with shopping hubs, restaurants, and cafes serving some of the best Belarus cuisines.
Minsk Belarus is also famous for its many gardens and parks, so a trip to the Gorky Central Children’s Park should not be missed.
The attractions here include fairground rides and an observation wheel offering a stunning city view. The National History Museum and National Art Museum are among the other options for sightseeing in Belarus capital Minsk.
2. BRASLAV LAKE AREA
The Braslav Lake Area is mostly the remains of an ancient glacier, and something that every Belarus travel guide would recommend as a must explore. The region has around 300 lakes referred to as the Belarus “Blue Necklace” owing to the azure waters.

3. BRASLAV LAKE AREA
The Braslav Lake Area is mostly the remains of an ancient glacier, and something that every Belarus travel guide would recommend as a must explore. The region has around 300 lakes referred to as the Belarus “Blue Necklace” owing to the azure waters.

Fourth largest Belarusian city - Vitebsk ????????
The fourth largest Belarusian city and capital of Vitebsk region in the north eastern part of Belarus. When city was liberated in 1944 by Red Army city was mostly in ruins and less than 200 people were left on their homes.
